Abner Mares vs. Anselmo Moreno on October 13th

By Marcus Richard: Having failed at getting IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire to take interest in fighting him, WBO super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KO’s) will have to settle for a bout against 27-year-old WBA Super World bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (33-1-1, 12 KO’s) on October 13th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight will be for the 26-year-old Mares’ World Boxing Council 122 pound title rather than Moreno’s 118 lb WBA strap. It’s a good fight because Moreno might actually be a better fighter than Donaire, but not as big of a draw unfortunately. A win over Moreno will look good for Mares, because he’s still building his name. Mares has already beaten former IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko twice and Vic Darchinyan. Mares wants to fight Donaire and WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux.

However, the fight with Rigondeaux may be a tough one to put together because he fights for Top Rank, whereas Mares is with Golden Boy Promotions. As such, the fight against Moreno may be about as good it gets for Mares unless Top Rank and Golden Boy can somehow let this fight take place. I highly doubt that Mares will get a shot against Donaire, though, because he’s a money fighter his promoter Bob Arum is matching him carefully right now. Mares, as well as Rigondeaux, might be too dangerous for Donaire.

Moreno did a lot better job of beating Darchinyan than Mares did. Moreno defeated Darchinyan by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision last year in December. In contrast, Mares has a controversial 12 round split decision win over Darchinyan from December 2010 in a fight where Mares landed a lot of low blows against Darchinyan.
