Abraham vs. Kessler a possibility

Abraham vs. Kessler a possibilityby Marcus Richardson: According to news from Sporten.tv2.dk there is an agreement in place for a fight between former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KO’s) and WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (35-3, 27 KO’s) for a fight at a still to be determined date. Nothing has been signed as of yet, but there is an agreement. It remains to be seen whether the fight can be made. It’s an easy fight to be made because both fighters are promoted by Sauerland, and they would do big business if they can make this fight.

It’s an ideal situation for both fighter as it would mean a huge payday. It would be risky for Kessler, because he’s got his sights set on a rematch against IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch in 2013. However, Kessler can’t just sit around and waste away until then. He’s got to stay active and a fight against the 32-year-old Abraham would be an interesting fight for him to take. For Abraham, he wants the biggest fight that can be made and you can argue that Kessler is probably the fight the fight he’s looking for.

The only fight that would come close to that is a bout between Abraham and former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. However, Abraham would have to likely wait around before he could get Bute in the ring because he’s already got a scheduled fight in November against Russian Dennis Grachev, and following that Bute will be fighting a rematch against Froch in March of next year.

If Abraham wants Bute, he’ll have to wait a considerable amount of time to get him in the ring, and chances are it won’t be worth it because Bute will have taken another loss to Froch. As such, Abraham vs. Kessler would seem to be the biggest fight that can be made.

Kessler hasn’t fought since last May when he stopped Allan Green in the 4th round to capture the vacant WBC Silver light heavyweight title. Before that, Kessler hadn’t fought in 11 months since beating Mehdi Boudla in June of 2011.

Abraham defeated WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz last Saturday night by a 12 round unanimous decision in Berlin, Germany. It was a really good performance from Abraham as he showed good defensive skills, and excellent power in winning by the scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 115-113.
