Cleverly will be loved in the U.S, says Groves; Welborn targeting Gavin

George Groves has backed Nathan Cleverly to be a hit in America this weekend.

The Commonwealth Super-Middleweight Champion impressed US fight fans in July this year when he stopped tough Mexican Francisco Sierra in San Jose, California, in a bloody battle.

Welshman Cleverly defends his World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Light-Heavyweight title this Saturday night just down the west coast in Los Angeles at the world famous Staples Centre against Shawn Hawk, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Groves says he’s got to show the Americans that he means business and he’ll get the support from the fans.

“The Americans will fall in love with Cleverly if he goes out there and gives them a good show and goes in the ring and has a fight,” Said Groves.

“When I fought in July I had a hard Mexican in front of me and I got cut above my eye, but that just made me fight harder and I gave it my all which the fans really appreciated,”

“The guy Cleverly is fighting, Shawn Hawk, is an American-Indian and I’m sure he won’t want to lose in front of his home fans,”

“Cleverly won’t have a problem out there, he’s got an exciting style, he’s aggressive and throws plenty of punches and sometimes lets his heart rule his head to stand and trade, I’m sure the Americans will really take to him,”

The undefeated Hammersmith southpaw, who defends his title against American ‘Road Warrior’ Glen Johnson on December 15th at the ExCeL London, has knocked up plenty of rounds sparring with Cleverly and says he’s the real deal.

Groves added, “We’ve done quite a few rounds in the past and I think his strengths are his high work-rate, strength, stamina and accuracy,”

“It can be quite overwhelming when you’re in the ring with him and these punches are flying in at high speed which opponents find hard to deal with. He’s also a good all-rounder and can change and adapt to styles in the ring,”

“He’s developing into a good champion and I’d like to see him against one of the other champions like Tavoris Cloud or Chad Dawson next year to prove his true calibre,”

“I’ll be watching him on BoxNation and will be backing him to retain his title in style.”

Cleverly v Hawk will be shown live on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546) from 1am Sunday. Join at boxnation.com

Welborn Wants Gavin Shot

By Daniel Mole

Midlands Area Champion, Jason Welborn, believes he is ready to take on newly crowned British Welterweight Champion, Frankie Gavin.

Welborn was ringside to see Gavin clinch a points victory over Junior Witter a week ago to take the title and is confident that, should the pair go toe-to-toe, he has the tools in his armoury to defeat the newly crowned British Champion.

Welborn (10-1) has steamrollered his last two opponents – James Flinn and Scott Haywood – since taking the Midlands Title and believes, given the opportunity, he can make Gavin’s British reign a short one.

“I really do think I have the tools to beat him,” he said. “Ever since Gavin won the title I’ve had loads of texts from people saying: ‘When are you going to fight him?’

“Everyone knows how I fight and if I get the time off work to train properly I will be fit and ready for Gavin.”

The 26 year-old is in action at the end of the month when he defends his Midland Title at the Wolverhampton Civic against an as yet unnamed opponent. With Welborn hailing from the Black Country and Gavin from Birmingham, it would be a local ‘derby’ that, he believes, would capture the nations imagination.

“I just need to get this fight out of the way and then hopefully Gavin will defend against me”, he added. “I know it’s a fight that people want to see.”

Welborn tops the PJ Rowson/Errol Johnson show at the Civic on Friday, 30th November. The bill also features former amateur stars Ricky Summers and Lee Glover, unbeaten Birmingham middleweight Andrew Robinson and Dudley debutant Luke Paddock.

Tickets are £30 unreserved seating and £50 ringside. More information is available from 07976 283 157.
