By Joseph Herron — On Saturday night at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, universally recognized Junior Welterweight Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia proved to the boxing world that his initial victory over future Hall of Famer Erik “El Terrible” Morales on March 24th was no fluke.

By using superior speed and strength, the 24 year old fighter from Philly overwhelmed the Mexican legend and more than likely put a dagger in the once brilliant career of the four division world champion with a massive left hand bomb at the 1:45 mark of round number four.

The courageous “El Terrible” immediately flew back into the ropes upon impact and spun onto the ring canvas. Before the third man in charge, Benjy Esteves Jr, could begin to count, a Morales cornerman jumped into the ring and Esteves instantaneously called a halt to the bout at the 1:43 mark of the fourth and final round.

Most ringside observers could see the difference in athleticism and power at the opening bell.

To begin the contest, the two men fought a very tentative round that could be described as a feeling out stanza for the customarily action oriented warriors. Aside from a few good shots landed by both fighters, the action didn’t begin to heat up until the subsequent 3 minutes.

Garcia started to increase the pace in round number two and began landing hard shots to the body, while attempting to land his powerful left hook counter whenever Morales tried to let his hands go.

Morales seemed reluctant to shoot more than one punch at a time, as he was trying to fight at different distances and angles. But wherever the Mexican favorite would move, the quicker and more athletic fighter would be there to counter or lead with a straight right or left hook to the body and head of Morales.

Garcia broke down the aged fighter with wicked hooks to the body and did a masterful job of setting up a massive right cross that had the 36 year old legend out on his feet to end the third round.

Most fight fans in attendance knew that the fight was almost over as Morales was helped back to his corner by one of his team members.

To Erik’s credit, “El Terrible” never quit trying to land something effective and finally got caught with the “Coup de Grace” during an exchange in the fourth and final stanza.

The finishing blow not only marked the end to a one-sided mismatch, but also signified the end of an overall momentous career that spanned nearly twenty years of highlight reel action.

After the bout, the fallen warrior spoke to the crowd in attendance.

“Time passes by and these are the signs that it is over,” admitted Erik Morales. “I was ready to fight but I couldn’t get it done. I couldn’t move the way I wanted to.”

The defending WBC, WBA, and Ring recognized Junior Welterweight Champion spoke about his second victory over the boxing legend.

“I wanted to show everyone that the first fight wasn’t a mistake and that I showed him too much respect the first time,” stated Danny Garcia. “I know Morales is a warrior and I really thought this fight was going to be more of a war.”

“I’m willing to fight anyone. I don’t duck anybody. No one gave me a chance when I beat Khan but I’m a killer. I’ll take on anyone.”

It will be interesting to see if Golden Boy Promotions pits their other hard punching 140 pound fighter, Argentine Lucas Matthysse, in the ring with Danny “Swift” possibly in December as the co-main event to Canelo’s next bout, which is projected to be on December 15th.

Vaya con Dios, “El Terrible”…and thanks for the lifetime of memories in the ring!! The next time you visit the Empire State, we’ll see you in Canastota!!
