John Murray feels rested for Gavin Rees
By Michael Collins: Former British and European lightweight champion John Murray (31-2, 18 KO’s) feels he’s rested from his 10 month break from boxing following two consecutive losses in 2011 and he’s now ready and eager to go for his fight against former WBA World light welterweight champion Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) on December 8th at the Olympia, Kensington, in London, United Kingdom. Murray, 27, suffered knockout losses to Kevin Mitchell and Brandon Rios in 2011. The defeats derailed Murray’s big hopes of being a world champion.
Murray said to the Manchester Evening News “I’ve had a long break from boxing and I’m feeling fresh. When I fought Brandon Rios it was my 33rd professional fight. I’ve been very busy and I’d had two hard fights. Now I’ve had my break and I’m in tremendous shape.”
Hopefully, Murray isn’t kidding himself about his losses to Rios and Mitchell by thinking he lost because he was worn down from having fought too many fights, because I think he might be deceiving himself if he believes that. Rios simply bludgeoned Murray into submission, and Mitchell was just too quick for him. Murray isn’t blessed with good hand speed, and it’s not surprising that he was beaten by Mitchell, a much quicker fighter.
Murray is going to have his hands full against Rees because he can punch and he’s plenty tough for a guy like Murray. It might be another fight where we see Murray get taken down. It wouldn’t be the fight that I would advise Murray to be taking coming off of a year layoff and two straight knockout losses. Murray would be better off fighting someone like Derry Mathews to get a nice easy win.
