Marquez removes all doubt as he destroys Pacquiao

By Rob Smith: Juan Manuel Marquez said he wanted to take the judges out of it the equation this time and he sure did do a good job of that by knocking Manny Pacquiao out cold with a single right hand late in the 6th that sent Pacquiao down flat on the canvas face first tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

That was brutal enough but Pacquiao stayed down, not moving a muscle for several minutes in one of those highlight reel knockouts. It reminded one of the KO that Pacquiao did against Ricky Hatton in the 2nd round of their fight in 2009. Hatton subsequently retired after the fight. It doesn’t look like Pacquiao will be retiring because he mentioned after that fight that he’s up for fighting Marquez for a 5th time, and Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum seemed pretty eager to make that fight happen.

Marquez’s face was covered with blood at the time he caught Pacquiao with that big right hand. Marquez had been cut on the nose during the round.

This was the fourth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez. Pacquiao had won two of the three previous fights with the first being a draw. Marquez was never happy with the results of those fights, feeling he had been badly robbed by the judges three times. But tonight Marquez left the judges to sit as spectators without any purpose other than just another group of people to watch Marquez smash Pacquiao into the canvas.

After the fight Pacquiao merely shrugged his shoulders, saying “That’s boxing. I started to get confident but I never expected that punch.”
