News: Cleverly talks Flintoff; Rahimi vs. Mbelwa; LaManna
World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Light-Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly met with new pro Freddie Flintoff today at the Peacock Gym in London.
Unbeaten Cleverly spoke to the media before he heads off to the US for his world title defence on Saturday 10th November at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, live on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
While former England cricket captain Flintoff was putting in valuable rounds of sparring ahead of his pro-debut on Friday 30th November at the M.E.N Arena, which is also live on BoxNation.
Welsh ace Cleverly gave the raw heavyweight some words of advice before he gets into the ring.
“Freddie was pretty chuffed to meet me and he said he’d seen me fight before which was nice,” Said Cleverly
“I believe that boxing is the hardest sport out there and for anyone to step through the ropes proves they’ve got the fire for a fight,”
“Freddie’s had a few battles on the cricket pitch with his team mates but when it’s one-on-one in a boxing ring, that’s when you’ve got to really stand and prove your character,”
“I think that Freddie’s made of the tough stuff, he was a beast on the pitch having the Aussies on the run, so he’s got to take that same fire and desire he showed when England won the Ashes in 2005 into the ring with him,”
“I said to Freddie that it’s going to be the hardest thing he has done, but the buzz from winning and with the crowd cheering will be well worth it.”
Cleverly is waiting to hear if he will be still be facing unbeaten Ryan Coyne who heads to court on November 1 to allow him to fight or there are three other potential challengers on standby.
He added, “All this last minute drama seems to be the norm for me so I just take it in my stride now,”
“Actually I’ve got a bit of notice this time, Juergen Brahmer pulled out last year with only 48 hours notice and in stepped Aleksy Kuziemski and I dealt with him. With still over a week to go until my fight that’s plenty of time to prepare for a new challenger if it’s not Coyne,”
“I’m quite chilled out about it, my training has gone perfect so there are no worries there and I’m fit and ready to fight.”
Rahimi and Mbelwa make weight for “Fight 4 Peace”
Tomorrow (Tuesday, October 30th) Hamid Rahimi and Said Mbelwa will make history when they step into the ring for the “Fight 4 Peace” in Kabul, the first professional boxing event in the history of Afghanistan. The World Boxing Organization officially sanctioned the 12 round middleweight contest for the vacant WBO Intercontinental “Peace” Championship which means that the winner will enter the top 15 of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight ratings.
At today’s official weigh-in both contenders made the weight. Rahimi who emphasized again that the “Fight 4 Peace” is “a dream coming true” weighed in at 72.4 kg (159.6 lbs.) while Mbelwa brought exactly the limit at 72.5 kg (160 lbs.).
Said Mbelwa (19-8-4, 12 KOs) who fought four the WBO Youth world cruiserweight championship in December 2011, losing to Agron Dzila from Switzerland, renewed his threat to knock out Rahimi in four rounds: “I said it before and I’ll say it again: The “Fight 4 Peace” is an important event and I respect Hamid Rahimi and his team for what they are doing. But once that bell rings I will do all I can to be victorious and take the “Peace Belt” home to Tanzania. Unfortunately, they got the wrong man. I will crash the party.”
Local hero and “Peace Fighter” Rahimi wasn’t intimated at all, stating “My people and my country are giving me so much positive energy. I simply cannot lose this fight. I will win for Afghanistan and send the peace message out to the world. ”
