Warren to pick between 3 candidates to fight Cleverly on 11/10

By Michael Collins: British promoter Frank Warren is choosing from one of three candidates to face WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (24-0, 11 KO’s) for his stateside fight on November 10th at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Cleverly was going to be fighting 175 pound contender Ryan Coyne but he’s dealing with problems with his former promoter so he won’t be able to take the fight. Warren will have to pick a top 15 contender in order for Cleverly’s fight to count as a title defense and it’s unclear at this moment whether he can do that with this short notice.

Cleverly has to up the level of his opposition because he’s not been wowing boxing fans with the types of fighters that he’s been facing and beaten since he picked up the World Boxing Organization title last year. There’s hope that Cleverly would be a different type of champion compared to the previous one Jurgen Brahmer. However, Cleverly has faced only these guys: Aleksy Kuziemski, Tony Bellew & Tommy Karpency.

Recently, the WBO ordered that Cleverly will have to defend his WBO strap against #1 Robin Krasniqi, a fighter that fits in nicely with the type of little known opposition that he’s been facing during his time as a champion. Cleverly needs to fight the likes of Chad Dawson, Bernard Hopkins, Jean Pascal, Beibut Shumenov, Tavoris Cloud, Ismayl Sillakh, Denis Grachev, Mikkel Kessler and Zsolt Erdei if he wants to make a name for himself but instead we’re seeing Karpency, Krasniqi, Bellew and Kuziemski.

If Cleverly does face a contender on November 10th, it could be a lower level contender rather than someone that boxing fans are familiar with and care to see.
