Allan Green misses weight for Eleider Alvarez bout

Light heavyweight Allan “Ghost Dog” Green (32-4, 22 KO’s) came in 6 pounds over the contract limit of 180 lbs for his fight against unbeaten Eleider Alvarez (12-0, 8 KO’s) for their scheduled 10 round fight this Friday night at the Connecticut Convention Center, Hartford, Connecticut, USA.

Green, 33, weighed in at 186 lbs. for the fight; whereas Alvarez came in 2 lbs under the contract limit at 178 lbs. Being over the limit will result up Green being fined $3000 or his $15,000 purse.

The thing is the weight for the fight was already set for 5 pounds over the light heavyweight limit of 175, so it’s hard to figure out why Green would miss it. He had a weight limit that was definitely a reachable one.

The Green-Alvarez fight will be televised on Friday Night Fights this week on ESPN2. It’s fight that will show whether #4 WBA, #7 WBO, Alvarez is for real or not. He’s looked decent in beating Nicholson Poulard and Danny McIntosh recently by stoppage wins, but hardly what you would call a great fighter.

Alvarez’s not all that fast, he doesn’t have huge power, he tends to slap a lot, and he’s easy to hit. But with the light heavyweight division being so weak, guys like Alvarez have a chance to get somewhere in this weight class.

Still, it’s difficult to picture Alvarez being able to beat someone like Bernard Hopkins, Adonis Stevenson or Nathan Cleverly. All three of those guys beat Alvarez easily what I can see. Alvarez might have a chance to defeat Beibut Shumenov if he could get a fight against him at some point. Shumenov hasn’t been busy lately, and that might be a winnable fight for him.

Green was a good super middleweight at one point in his career, and he even took part in the Super Six tournament. However, he was easily beaten by Andre Ward and Glen Johnson in the tournament. Recently, Green was stopped by Mikkel Kessler in the 4th round last year in May.
