Azea Augustama headlines April 6th Casino Miami Jai-Alai card

This Saturday April 6th Casino Miami Jai-Alai will host an exciting five-bout fight card featuring cruiserweight prospect, Azea Augustama of Haiti.

Augustama (13-1, 8 KO) will take on David McNemar (13-2, 10 KO) of West Virginia in the 10 round main event in what has all the makings of a war.

There will be four other bouts, highlighted by Coral Springs’ own “Jewish Dragon” Hunter Levy Sundberg (2-0, 1 KO), who is trained by Stacy McKinley, in a four round junior welterweight attraction against Lamar Charlton (1-2-1, 1 KO) of Ocala. Charlton fought to a four round draw against Miami based Cuban fighter Hairon Socarras last year.

Two power punchers, who happen to be gym-mates, will be making their U.S. debut on this card.

Two-time Olympian and 2008 bronze medalist Kanat Islam, of Kazakhstan, will be taking on Yolexcy Martinez-Leiva (5-5, 4 KO) of Cuba in a six round junior middleweight attraction. The Chinese born Islam is a perfect 8-0, 8 KO as a pro.

Also, Haitian-American “Classy” Stan Staniclasse, a former amateur standout from Boynton Beach, tries to improve his record to 4-0 with 4 KO when he takes on Jerrod Caldwell (2-1, 1 KO) from Gainesville.

Last but not least there will be heavyweight presence at the Casino Miami Jai-Alai Saturday night when 6’9”, yes 6’9” Cuban heavyweight Jorge Flores (1-1, 1 KO) battles Chaen Chess (1-1, 1 KO) from Cincinnati, Ohio, in a four round bout.

There will also be a tribute to the late Florentino “Floro” Fernandez, the legendary Cuban fighter who passed away in January. Florentino finished his boxing career with 50 wins and an impressive 43 knockouts. Some of his victims included Ralph Dupas, Gaspar Ortega and Jose “Chegui” Torres. He also fought for the world middleweight title, and lost a razor thin split decision to Gene Fullmer. Florentino’s son, nieces and nephews are scheduled to attend.

Longtime trainer and matchmaker Al Bonanni resurrects Tiburon promotions alongside his daughter Kristina to bring us “The Homecoming” – an event that will remind the South Florida boxing faithful of the bouts of yesteryear. Bonanni wants to take South Florida boxing back to its roots, and at the venue where many champions have graced the squared circle. Some of them include: Wilfredo Benitez, Wilfredo Gomez, Aaron Pryor, Alexis Arguello, Jeff Chandler, Alfredo Escalera, Sugar Baby Rojas, Miguel “Happy” Lora, Freddie Pendleton, Randall Bailey, Frankie Randall and Antonio Tarver.

The weigh-in will be Friday April 5th at the Casino Miami Jai-Alai at 4pm.

Ticket prices: $17.50 general admission, $35 ringside, and $75 VIP Ringside.
