Gennady Golovkin-Curtis Stevens: Get Ready For A BANG!

Gennady Golovkin Curtis Stevens: Get Ready For A BANG!As fans may have read, middleweight ruler (begging the pardon of Sergio Martinez) Gennady Golovkin is shopping around for a November challenger, with a December fight also pencilled in. Currently one of the hottest fighters/champions/out and out punchers in boxing, “GGG” has fans salivating for more pure punching action.

Fresh off his hugely impressive body punch KO over the experienced Matthew Macklin, the WBA/IBO 160-pound king wants to close 2013 with two more highlight reel wins. As to who his November foe might be, well, Curtis Stevens scored a sizzling highlight reel KO of his own last night in Connecticut, in wrecking Saul Roman in the opening round of a fight that contested the vacant NABF middleweight belt.

Living up to his “Showtime” moniker, Stevens, 25-3(18) stretched the Antonio Margarito look-alike with a beautiful left hook to the head. Stevens’ name had been mentioned as a possible challenger for Golovkin before last night’s possible KO of the year candidate and now, with Stevens having set pulses racing with his latest destruction (last night’s win was Stevens’ tenth 1st-round KO), the hype may see to it that the 28-year-old does indeed get the call.

Golovkin, 27-0(24) certainly does look unbeatable right now, yet Stevens would have to be given at least a small puncher’s chance – even if there is absolutely nothing small about the Brownsville man’s punching ability. Golovkin, though, is far more than a pure puncher: the Kazakhstan warrior is also a superb boxer; one who has a magnificent amateur pedigree. Does Stevens – who, don’t forget, has been beaten by Jesse Brinkley and outboxed by Andre Dirrell – have anything to really trouble the classy destroyer? Again, that puncher’s chance can never be written off, and Stevens, a chilling seek and destroy kind of guy to match Golovkin, has fast hands and power in both.

Golovkin, if this sellable match-up does get made, will naturally enter the ring as a considerable favourite to win, but one other thing is also a definite: the fight will be exciting and will end via a KO one way or the other. One way or the other? Most fans will feel it will be Golovkin doing the laying out in this one, and it must be agreed how Stevens is not the hardest guy in the division to hit. But this is a good fight because guaranteed fireworks are not, well, guaranteed in every fight. They are guaranteed in this one!

If this fight does get made, get ready for a bang. A big bang! Bottom line, there is nothing like a savage KO to get fight fans talking. This fight will not disappoint in that regard.
