MANAGER Matt Clark says Lucas Browne will attempt to end an Aussie jinx if he beats Richard Towers this Saturday.

The unbeaten heavyweight punchers clash in an eliminator for David Price’s Commonwealth strap in Hull and Clark believes his charge has the tools to end 121 years of hurt for the men from down under.

“It’s been a long time between drinks, as us Aussies say, since we’ve had a Commonwealth heavyweight champion. It was Peter Jackson in 1982, so we’re probably due one,” he explained.

“There’s been a few guys that have been over and challenged for the title. Bob Mirovic springs to mind as well as Kali Meehan and they came up short.

“We’re hoping to get the job done this Saturday night and then look to go one better than those guys.

“We’d definitely take the Price fight for Lucas because, whether it be over here or in Australia, it’d be a big fight and it’s one Lucas thinks he can win.”

Despite knowing that a shot at a major championship is potentially on the horizon, Clark is keen to point out that his team isn’t overlooking the challenge Towers poses.

The giant Sheffield man has come in for some criticism in the past 18 months, but comes into the fight with a perfect record and has spared some of the best big men on the planet.

“We don’t want to overlook this fight and we’re giving Richard Towers the utmost respect,” Clark said.

“Towers is 6ft 8in, he can crack, I think he’s got 11 knockouts from 14 wins and he’s fought some decent guys. He’s also quite tricky with that Ingle style.

“The Ingles have a list of champion a mile long and they do fight in a similar style. They can be quite awkward and Lucas could find it quite difficult until he closes the gap and when does it could be the end of the show.”
