Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul Alvarez: Floyd Makes Another Smart Decision

floyd744As always, any Mayweather Jr. news is colossal news, and as soon as Floyd announced his next opponent the boxing community went wild.

Did Mayweather Jr. make a big mistake by picking Saul Alvarez as his next foe? Will Canelo finally expose Mayweather’s age? Is Floyd finally picking a formidable opponent?

Those are some of the questions that boxing fans are currently chewing over on various forums. They are saying that Saul will make Mayweather Jr. run, and that Floyd has finally made a brave move by picking someone who poses a true threat to him.

Let’s for a second remember that of all things Mayweather Jr. is, his biggest attribute is his ability to make very smart and well thought out decision. He is anything but stupid, always knowing exactly what he is doing and why he is doing it.

Did Mayweather Jr. make a big mistake by picking Saul Alvarez as his next foe? I assume that most of you would agree that signing the biggest payday in his career is not a mistake for Floyd. While it is hard to say how much of a paycheck Floyd will receive at the end of the night, I would easily argue that this will be at least in the top three profitable fights in his entire career.

Picking Canelo makes perfect sense! Here we have a young fighter, with a tremendous following and an unblemished record, with pretty much no top notch championship level competition. By the way, the Trout fight and Saul’s popularity are the only things that placed Canelo in the category of a Mayweather Jr. fight.

Essentially Mayweather Jr. is facing a young untested fighter with extremely limited ring experience.

Will Canelo finally expose Mayweather’s age? Mayweather Jr. has never showed any signs of aging, and has always been one of the most accurate punchers in the history of boxing. With Canelo’s clear lack of stamina and very evident slowing down in the later rounds, Mayweather Jr. is going to have an easier time with Alvarez than most believe.

In reality, it doesn’t even matter. Whether Saul Alvarez, Miguel Cotto or anyone else, there isn’t an opponent on this plant that will satisfy the Mayweather Jr. critics. At least it seems that way.
