Mayweather with six fighters he’s already approved

By Jeff Sorby: According to Ron Borges, Floyd Mayweather Jr. already has six opponents he’s approved for his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS for him to face within 30 months. These are the fighters that Mayweather has approved: Alfredo Angulo, Devon Alexander, Robert Guerrero, Saul Alvarez, Marcos Maidana and Danny Garcia.

Mayweather is already scheduled to fight Guerrero on May 4th, but it’s unclear how reliable this list is or whether he’ll stick to facing just these guys rather than other fighters that aren’t on the list.

The six-fighter list makes a lot of sense because all of those fighters are from Golden Boy Promotions, and that’s who Mayweather is working with. I would be a little skeptical about the list if there were Top Rank fighters on there like Brandon Rios, Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley.

If this list is the guys that Mayweather will in fact be facing for his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS then you’ve got to figure Mayweather got a really good deal with Showtime because he’s only got one tough fighter on the list and that’s Saul Alvarez. The rest of them are totally beatable opponents. Alexander is a good fighter, but he’s not in Mayweather’s class even at this stage in his career.

Maidana and Angulo would be really easy fights for Mayweather because both of them are really slow of hand, and easy to hit. Maidana was completely schooled by Alexander last year in February in one of the most one-sided fights you’ll ever see that doesn’t involve a knockout. Just based on that fight alone, Maidana shouldn’t be on any approved list to fight Mayweather.

Angulo hasn’t looked like the same fighter he once was ever since he was stopped in the 6th round by James Kirkland in November 2011. Angulo has fought twice since then, and he’s not looked great. He was never fast to begin with, but Angulo looks even slower now for some reason. It would be too easy for Mayweather to beat this guy.
