Richard Commey wins IBF Africa Lightweight title

Richard Commey wins IBF Africa Lightweight titleBy Prince Dornu-Leiku: Unbeaten Ghanaian prospect, Richard Commey continued his march towards world championship glory by stopping compatriot Bilal Mohammed in round 7 to claim the hitherto vacant IBF Africa Lightweight title in an exciting fight in Accra on Friday night.

Commey improved his burgeoning career to 15-0, 15 KOs whilst condemning veteran Bilal to 24-6, 20 KOs as he dominated an unyielding and defiant opponent in what was easily the UK-based Ghanaian’s biggest ever test to date.

But it was a test the young boxer passed with excellence, sending Bilal to the canvas in the 4th round before finishing him off in the 7th with some vicious jabs and combinations and uppercuts that were just too much for the veteran who only last year challenged for the Commonwealth Lightweight belt.

In the end, referee Roger Barnor had no choice than to stop the fight at 2 minutes, 30 seconds of the 7th round and pave way for Commey to be decorated with the belt by IBF President for Africa, Middle East and Persian Gulf and British Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC), Tanzanian Onesmo Ngowi who supervised the highly charged fight organized by the UK-based Streetwise Management and Promotions in collaboration with Ghana-based Box Office Sports Promotions headed by Alex Ntiamoah Boakye.

Mike Amoo-Bediako, CEO of Streetwise Management also came down from the UK to see firsthand to the successful promotion at the Will Power Boxing Gym in the heart of the Ghanaian capital which witnessed an unbelievably sizeable crowd who cheered throughout the night.

Commey is expected to defend the title in June.
