Steven Pearce Is Back On Track

By Daniel Mole – Steven Pearce believes his boxing career is back on track after lifting the Midlands Area Welterweight Title on Friday evening.

The Stourbridge fighter (now 7-1), who took the championship bout at just four days notice, stopped Derby’s Luke Gallear in the fifth round of a bruising battle at Burton Town Hall.

It was the perfect response to Pearce’s Prizefighter defeat back in January – the only loss of his professional career. Now, with the Midlands Area strap secured, the 28 year-old is targetting a double defence of the title and a rematch against the man who blotted his previously perfect copybook at Prizefighter – Glenn Foot – for the English Welterweight Title.

“I had to dig deep to come back from that defeat against Foot,” he told www.uko-boxing.com. “I’ve shown that I’m willing to fight anyone, anywhere. I’ve gone into Gallear’s back garden, in front of all his fans, and beat him.

“This is the start for me. I want to defend this title twice, win it outright and then I’ll be looking to fight Foot for the English Title. I want to show him that Prizefighter was just a bad night at the office. There’s unfinished business between me and Foot.”

Pearce looks set to make a first defence of his newly-won belt against the man he stepped in for – Joel Ryan. The Walsall boxer pulled out of the bout last Monday with a chest infection and Pearce is happy to give him a shot at the belt. However, he was also quick to point out that he has no intention of giving it up when the pair meet, which is likely to be in early May.

“I’m happy to fight Joel,” he added. “He’s meant to be a nice boxer but if he thinks he’s going to walk through me, he’s got no chance. Look at Luke Gallear. He tried to come forward time after time.

“He’d had eight weeks to prepare for the fight and went in there as fit as anything. He took a lot of shots. He walked on to power punches but fair play; he hung on in there longer than I thought. I rocked him a few times but he didn’t give up. He showed real heart. I fully respect him. Luke Gallear is a warrior. I bulldozed him and I’ll bulldoze Joel Ryan as well.”
