WBC Declares Three Days of World Mourning for Emile Griffith

The World Boxing Council declares three days of worldwide mourning for the passing away of one of the greatest welterweights in history, Emile Griffith, who had been living with several health problems.

Emile was one of the main boxers who inspired us to create an organization to help boxers who hit hard times when they become old. Griffith lived in misery, only supported by a pension given by the WBC for more than 10 years and by the help of Gil Clancy, who was his friend and manager.

Griffith had 109 fights, which included one against José “Mantequilla” Nápoles. He experienced a very sad event when Benny “Kid” Paret died after their fight due to the punches he received. Griffith never fought in the same way again.

Emile Griffith, who was born in the Virgin Islands. was a dear friend to the WBC, and he will remain in our hearts.
