The following is one of the weekly “Hook to the Liver” columns that have been published in El Universal every Sunday for the last five years and written by WBC President Jose Sulaiman.
This column was written by his children – Pepe, Lucy, Hector, Fernando, Mauricio, and Claudia – while he recovers from surgery. From October 13, translated from Spanish:
HOOK TO THE LIVER
Partial Scoring at the End of Four Rounds
Just as the rule implemented by Jose Sulaiman, we wish to let you know the official scoring at the end of four rounds. This challenger has been tougher than expected, and it is actually demanding our champion to fight as hard as ever. Even when several complications have come up, the judges have him ahead by a score of 39 to 37.
Our mom and all six childen are here, waiting patiently in the same waiting room of UCLA´s ICU, but with great enthusiasm to continue the famous “Hook to the Liver” that our father writes. These hours and days expecting his recovery have given us the chance to think about him and the way he truly is – his likes, his interests, achievements and plans. Moments such as the ones we are now living show the true value and importance of the day-to-day life of a human being. The many demonstrations of affection we have received from around the world expressing their care and concern for our father’s health just confirm that his way through life has left a legacy among many, which makes us very proud.
One of his greatest satisfactions in life has been to see any Mexican succeed. He surely would have included in this column the heroic success of our athletes in the World Athletic Championships, the historic crowning of Mexico in the pre-World Basketball Championship beating Puerto Rico, Adrián González now playing for The Los Angeles Dodgers while participating in the Big League Play-Offs, and of course, the great goal of Mexico – keeping alive the hopes of qualifying for soccer’s World Cup in Brazil.
From many of his conversations before his surgery, we know for a fact what his highest priorities are for boxing. Those are the challenges that keep him dreaming and working as hard as ever: The World Cup that will start this coming October 18th in Mexico City will bring a very interesting tournament to the public, in which the champions of the federations affiliated with the WBC compete to establish the best fighter in each division, with the winner becoming the challenger to the World Crown.
The World Boxing Council’s annual convention, to take place in Thailand from November 3rd to November 9th, is the most important meeting each year, where hundreds of WBC people gather to address highly-relevant topics, and to continue the changes that will keep improving boxing. This will be the first time he will be absent from this meeting in his 45 years with the organization.
He has for several years been developing a scoring system to achieve maximum justice in terms of judges’ scorings, with the intentions of perfecting the actual 10-point must system.
Another objective has been to try to find a way to reunite all the members of the boxing community, since there are currently many differences between the various promoters, TV networks, and all those who participate in the promotion of this great sport.
Our father is a fighter in many ways, and one of his most important traits is that he has always been friends with everyone. In spite of difficulties, conflicts and disagreements, he steps down from the ring and offers his friendship to all. He has an incomparable capacity to reconcile people and to create an atmosphere of friendship and trust. He has made his home his office. He answers phone calls himself, and works until late hours exclusively dedicated to boxing issues.
We pray to God to help him, to give him strength to get back as soon as possible to allow him to soon be writing his “Hook to the Liver.”
Until next week… We expect his recovery soon, so he can get back to his keyboard and tell us about his ideas and dreams in this column.
