Cassius Connor drops down to lightweight for British Masters test

Surrey boxer Cassius Connor 11-8(1)-1 has dropped down from light welterweight to lightwweight to challenge for the vacant British Masters Gold title at York Hall, London on July 12th.

The title challenge takes place on a talent-packed Goodwin Promotions show with the headlining fight between unbeaten lightweight Richard Commey 17(17)-0-0 and Welshman Gary Buckland 28(9)-4(2)-0 in a battle for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title.

Connor’s opponent is yet to be confirmed but the Surrey star is confident regardless of who is likely to be placed in front of him on the night, “I’ll fight anyone you put in front of me. My weight is the lowest it has ever been this far out from fight night! This is gonna be the best Danny Cassius Connor anybody has ever seen, I promise you!”

27 year old Connor was due to challenge for the vacant British Masters International Gold light welterweight title on Sunday 27th April at York Hall but difficulties in finding suitable opponents thwarted the opportunity. Instead Connor fought last minute stand-in opponent Arek Malek 13(4)-66(5)-4 and notched up a points win over the tough journeyman from Poland, who notably hasn’t been stopped in 55 fights.

Connor, a Prizefighter finalist, has some noteworthy scalps on his ledger, and has experienced being a champion at all weights to date. At welterweight in 2012 Connor edged a points win over Tyler Goodjohn to claim the vacant British Masters title.

The next two fights saw a confident Connor really come of age with a points win over then unbeaten Chris Evangelou, to attain the vacant BBBofC Southern Area light welterweight title, in a close and thoroughly entertaining battle. The win was followed up finely with the first defense of the title to the same opponent in Evangelou, this time as a challenger, and with the same result in favour of victorious Connor, but in a lot more convincing fashion with rival ‘The Flash’ hitting the canvas twice in round seven.

At lightweight, Connor will attempt to replicate the previous successes in heavier weights with this first title challenge in July. Connor shares his ambitions at the new weight, “It feels like a fresh start for me and a chance to put right a few wrongs, I’m strong at light welter and will be a monster at lightweight and can’t wait to stamp my authority and make a name for myself.”

Chief support on the bill is Miles Shinkwin 8(3)-0-0 and Joel McIntyre 11(1)-0-0, putting their unbeaten records on the line for the vacant BBBofC Southern Area light heavyweight title in a tantalising winner-takes-all contest.

The rest of the undercard features TKO Gym’s unbeaten Southern Area light middleweight champion, Freddie Turner 10-0-0 as he defends his honours against Brentwood’s Kris Agyei-Dua 7(2)-2(1)-2.

Super middleweight Joe Mullender 6(2)-1-0 looks to challenge for the vacant International Masters title after losing narrowly to Michael Obin on the previous attempt to claim the belt.

This will be the 27 year old’s third ten round title fight in eight months, and will be entering the ring confidently, coming off the back of convincing points win against Diego Burton to secure the British Masters super middleweight title. Opponent is yet to be confirmed.

Crusierweight Tony Conquest 13(5)-2(2)-0 fights in an eight rounder, opponent yet to be confirmed.

North London brothers Andreas Evangelou 8(1)-0-1 and Chris Evangelou 10(1)-3-0, light welterweight Shane Watson 10(1)-1-0 and light middleweight Larry Ekundayo 6(2)-0-0 all compete in six rounders against unconfirmed opponents.

Light heavyweight Brent Osborne (0-1-0) takes on Mitch Mitchell 5(2)-19(3)-1 in a four round contest.

Super featherweights Craig Hardy 0-1(1)-1 and Graham Fearn 5(1)-23(3)-2 go head to head in a four rounder.

Youngsters Ben Hall 2-0-0, Remel Scott 1-0-, Martin Hillman 1-1-0 and debutant Grant Dennis all take part in four rounders against unconfirmed opponents.
