(Photo/Courtesy Sumio Yamada) WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) did what he said he was going to do by going out and halting challenger Osumanu Adama (22-4, 16 KO’s) in the 7th round in a three knockdown performance at the at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Golovkin knocked Adama down with a jab in the 7th. Shortly after that, Golovkin hit Adama with a left hook square in the jaw that staggered Adama, sending him backwards a couple of steps.

The referee Louis Pabon quickly stopped the fight at that point rather than waiting to see if Adama would recover from the shot. The official time of the stoppage was 1:20. It’s hard to say if Adama would have made it through the round, because he had been staggered several other times in the fight and he’d been able to recoup from the punches.

Golovkin stopped Adama in the 1st, 6th and 7th rounds. At the end of the 1st round, Golovkin nailed Adama with a solid right hand in the last seconds that put Adama down. He had been knocked off balance with a jab from Golovkin just prior to getting nailed with a right hand to the head and dropped. In the 6th round, Golovkin hit Adama with a thunderous left hook to the head that dropped him. That was a really big shot, and it was surprising that Adama got up from it. In the 7th, Golovkin hit Adama with a hard jab that knocked him down. It was a flash knockdown, as Adama was clearly not hurt by the shot.

After the fight, Golovkin said he’d like to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. Golovkin said “I want this fight. I’d go to 154.” Golovkin also mentioned wanting to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. The reality is that Golovkin has very little chance of getting a fight against either Mayweather or Martinez.
