Maidana: I know what it takes to beat Mayweather

(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) thinks he has it all figured out how to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) in their rematch coming up next month on September 13th. Maidana believes that the key to cracking the MayVinci code is to put him under so much pressure that he’ll eventually either get stopped by one of Maidana’s storm of power shots or he’ll get outworked and lose a decision.

To be sure, Maidana came close to beating Mayweather last May when he lost a 12 round majority decision to him at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. With a little better stamina in the last 7 rounds of the fight, Maidana might have pulled off the biggest upset in 2014. But Maidana ended up fading the last half of the fight and ruining his chances for success based on his poor conditioning.

“The second fight, I’m used to it. I know exactly what it takes,” Maidana said. “He’s the favorite because he’s Floyd Mayweather and everybody’s thinking he’s going to win, but you know what? In boxing, there’s always surprises,”

Fans are expecting Mayweather to win this fight, but there’s always a chance that Maidana could surprise Mayweather by coming on strong and getting the win. Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia has been working him hard to get his weight down and to build up his stamina.

Whether he’ll be able to get Maidana in good enough shape to fight hard for the full 3 minutes of every round is something we’re going to see. Maidana gassed out late in his fights with Adrien Broner, Amir Khan and Erik Morales in the past.

It’s possible that Maidana may not have the ability to get better in the conditioning department. Power punchers generally don’t have great stamina, and Maidana seems to be no different than a lot of the famous power punchers from the past in that department.
