Maidana plans on being very aggressive against Mayweather in rematch

Former WBA 147 pound champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 32 KOs) said last night that his plan for his September 13th rematch against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) is to be very aggressive to try and beat him in their headlining fight on the Mayhem fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maidana says he didn’t have his conditioning right to fight a hard fight for 12 rounds in their previous fight last May, and that’s why he tanked in the last half of the fight after taking an early lead in the first 6 rounds.

Mayweather was able to come on and win most of the last 6 rounds to pull out a 12 round majority decision. Maidana says he’s got more time to work on his conditioning and that he’s not run out of fuel this time around in pushing the fight to Mayweather.

“I thought Mayweather would be a little faster, but that wasn’t the case,” Maidana said last night to Showtime. “I got to him. That’s what I basically noticed. He wasn’t that fast as I expected. The first time I had a little more anxiety. I have more time to train this time. I know more and that’s going to be the key to winning the second fight. I believe I was totally under control by the 5th and 6th rounds. I felt he picked it up after the 6th round a little bit and that’s when he went u on the score cards a little more. That’s what I need to do – attack a little more. I thought the fight was very even, and people had a lot of questions about the first fight and what happened. The second fight will definitely take the questions out. I’m aggressive and I’ve always been in all of my fights very aggressive, and that’s how I’m going to be in the second fight. We’re not going to change much. We want to correct a couple of flaws that we committed during that fight, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

There’s no question Mayweather’s has deteriorated in the last 3-4 years, and he’s nowhere near as fast as he once was. However, his defense is still quite good and he still has enough hand speed to land his clean shots and then avoid the counter punches from his slower opponents like Maidana.
