Marquez – Alvarado Weigh in Coverage

After well over a decade, boxing returns to the historic Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California. This afternoon Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1) and American Mike Alvarado (34-2-0) stepped onto the scales for their last formality before Saturday’s crossroads bout. This wasn’t your typical weigh in full of trash talk and posturing, but rather respect and compliments. There was a procedural and professional demeanor from the fighters, seemingly focused on the must win situation that lie ahead.

Alvarado was first to the scale, coming in at 143.2 pounds. Marquez followed at 141.6 pounds. No doubt the fighter out of Denver, Colorado is the naturally bigger man and should walk into the ring tomorrow with a noticeable weight advantage.

Marquez and Alvarado look in tremendous shape, a clear indication of the importance of tomorrow’s matchup. Both men come in off losses from last October, as Marquez dropped a decision to Tim Bradley in Las Vegas and Alvarado suffered a brutal beating at the hands of Ruslan Provodnikov in his hometown. Saturday night’s victor figures to win the “Pacquiao Sweepstakes” and line themselves up for a seven-figure payday against the Filipino icon late this year. The loser goes back to the drawing board with an uncertain future.

For “Dinamita” Marquez, this is a return to the venue where he built his career in the USA, winning all twelve of his bouts in the Forum between 1995 and 1999. Will the 40 year old legend reign triumphant in his return, or will the hungry “Mile High” Mike pull the upset in this historic event?
