Matty Askin targets British title shot

BLACKPOOL cruiserweight Matty Askin believes he should be next in line for a shot at the British title.

The 25-year-old retained his English title with a blistering display against Menay Edwards on Saturday night and feels it was a performance that should earn him mandatory status.

British champion Jon Lewis Dickinson won the Lonsdale belt outright on the same night by halting common opponent Neil Dawson in Newcastle and now has to decide whether he will continue to fight at domestic level or move on.

“I think Dickinson will vacate, but I’d love that rematch and so would the fans,” Matty, 17-2 (10 KOs), said.

“Me and Menay set a bar the other night and showed that the cruiserweights can fight like the lighter weights. Me and Dickinson would be another great fight and the ball is in his court.

“He won last time we fought (in 2012), but I’m stronger, fitter and more mature than I was then. I sparred him a few weeks ago and I think it will definitely make for a great fight that people want to see so let’s get it on.

“I don’t know what options he’s got, but if he goes down a different road, then I’ll fight whoever because I just want that British title.”

Menay Edwards spent a number of days in hospital following Saturday’s fight after doctors found a slight amount of bleeding from his brain. Thankfully, he has now been deemed fit enough to return home and will be able to lead a normal and healthy life.
