CANASTOTA, NY – FEBRUARY 13, 2014 – The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today Hall of Famer Dwight Muhammad Qawi will return to Canastota to attend festivities planned for the 25th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend June 5-8th.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi

“Dwight Muhammad Qawi was one of boxing’s most popular stars of the 1980s,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “His relentless style made him a fan favorite and we are looking forward to welcoming him back to Canastota to participate in the 25th anniversary celebration.”

Born on January 5, 1953 in Baltimore, he moved to Camden, NJ as a child. Qawi, who had no amateur bouts, turned pro in 1978. The 5′ 7″ powerhouse stopped Matthew Saad Muhammad (TKO 10) to win the WBC light heavyweight belt in 1981 and reigned until 1983 when he lost a unification bout with Hall of Famer Michael Spinks (L 15). Qawi moved up in weight to capture the WBA cruiserweight title in 1985. Behind an aggressive ring style, “The Camden Buzzsaw” logged a 41-11-1 (25 KOs) record that includes wins over Leon Spinks, Mike Rossman, James Scott, Lee Roy Murphy, Jerry Martin and Eddie Davis. In 2004 Qawi was elected into the Hall of Fame.

Events planned for the weekend include a banquet, a Night of Puerto Rican Pride, parade, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the Official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2014. Living inductees include two division champion “The Pride of Wales” Joe Calzaghe, six division world champion “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya, three division champion Felix “Tito” Trinidad, promoter Barry Hearn, referee Richard Steele, journalist Graham Houston and photographer Neil Leifer. Posthumous inductees in the Old-Timer, Pioneer and Non-Participant categories will also be honored.

An impressive list of over 40 boxing greats from the United States and abroad are scheduled to participate in weekend.
