Two World Champions Steal the Show as Preliminary Round Action Concludes at the Junior and Youth Open in Reno
(RENO, NEV.) – Preliminary competition concluded on Thursday evening at the 2014 Junior and Youth Open at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev. Boxers competing in the tournament’s deeper divisions earned spots in the semifinal round with wins on Thursday while athletes in several of the smaller weight classes clinched berths in their respective championship bouts.
The female athletes made their tournament debut on Thursday with action taking place in five women’s junior and youth weight classes. 2013 World Champion Caitlin Orosco (Anaheim, Calif.) enjoyed a short night in her first bout of the tournament. Orosco won a TKO at the 1:31 mark of the first round in her quarterfinal contest with Kristen Leija (San Antonio, Texas). She will take on Karina Sarabia (El Monte, Calif.) in youth flyweight action on Thursday.
Defending champion Nysja Barrientes (Las Vegas, Nev.) competed in her first bout at the youth bantamweight division in a semifinal match-up with Brenda Roman (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Barrientes took a unanimous decision win over Roman on Thursday to advance to a championship round match-up with Melody Montes (Kissimmee, Fla.) on Saturday.
In men’s action, several youth boxers earned semifinal berths with victories in Thursday’s action. 2013 Junior World Champion Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) claimed his second win of the tournament in the youth flyweight division. Stevenson won a wide decision over Robert Garcia (Litchfield, Ariz.) to advance to a semifinal match-up with Brandon Figueroa (Weslaco, Texas), the younger brother of interim lightweight world champion Omar Figueroa. The younger Figueroa will enjoy the support of his big brother when he takes the ring on Friday for his bout with Stevenson. On the opposite side of the bracket, 2013 youth champion Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) took a unanimous decision win over Darren Cunningham (St. Louis, Mo.) to claim a spot in semifinal competition.
2013 Junior Olympic national champions Ruben Villa (Salinas, Calif.) Isidro Ochoa (Fresno, Calif.), and Mark Dawson (Philadelphia, Pa.) all moved one step closer to another national title with victories in their quarterfinal bouts on Thursday. Junior middleweight titlist Ferdinand Kerobyan (N. Hollywood, Calif.) didn’t enjoy the same success, dropping a unanimous decision to 2013 Team USA member John Williams (Baton Rouge, La.).
2013 USA Boxing youth national champion John Luna (Milwaukee, Wis.) took a unanimous decision over Ricky Pina (Boston, Mass.) in his first bout of the tournament to clinch a spot in the finals. His teammate Gilbert Renteria (Houston, Texas) dropped a split decision to Geovanny Santiago in light flyweight action, ending his run at a second straight national title.
Semifinal action will kick off at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno with 43 bouts on tap for the fourth day of competition.
USA Boxing’s junior and youth programs are critical to the organization’s developmental pipeline and have consistently produced Olympians and World Champions, including the United States’ last two Olympic gold medalists Andre Ward (2004) and Claressa Shields (2012).
