DerekHe’ll have to go to Germany, that’s the only place that will certify Chagaev’s physical Posted September 3, 2012 1:06 amADNo worries – I know what you mean, and the type of fans it was directed at. Fans will rage at eachother about scores, but really it only takes a very slight difference in each person as to how you personally reward workrate vs clean connects and you come up with very different scores. British fans like aggression, workrate and heart on the sleeve type characters (like Hatton or Benn) ahead of more defensive technicians (like Jonny Nelson or Richie Woodhall) – not just in boxing, in football too, and we`ll warm to those characters and see fights in that context. I think German fans prize the technical aspects more than British fans. In the end it is often what the crowd demands is what boxers need to produce. Someone like Marco Huck would probably be loved in Britain (if he were British) whereas had Ottke been British people would be happy he had titles but wouldn`t turn up in large numbers to his fights, and would turn on him in fights where it looks like he is coasting. Posted September 2, 2012 11:21 pmrighthookI had it for Sturm 116-112 Geale was very active but his pitty pat punches didn’t score in my books. Sturm’s jab was harder than Geale’s right hand. I guess the judges just liked Geale’s relentless activity but Sturm scored the more telling punches throughout the whole fight. Posted September 2, 2012 1:23 pmBlack KidTo me it is very hard to score the fight 116 vs. 1122 for eighter boxer. I had Sturm winning by 1 round. Not a robbery but strange scoring. Posted September 2, 2012 9:09 amBlack KidGood post. Posted September 2, 2012 9:06 amBlack KidSturm was a boring but solid champ. New kids on the bloxxxx. Posted September 2, 2012 9:05 amMr RubesGood comment AD. And actually apologies for my comment above…it was a straight reaction and I had a few bottles of beer drank  I do agree that the likes of some German fighters have been awarded close decisions that could have gone either way and probably would have gone to the other if it was in the other’s backyard. And so there can look a complacency sometimes instead of urgency on these fighters at times. And so this can be irritating, while certainly not a robbery. Just close. I agree. Alonzo I don’t know what a ham fisted Kultur is so I can’t comment :) :?: Posted September 2, 2012 6:53 amADRubes, I think it is a fair point that Germany is nowhere near as bad a place to fight as the majority of my fellow British (and Aussie) posters might depict. We have actually seen a number of good fair decisions in Germany in recent years, and there is no country that hasn`t had decisions which are embarassing – the USA most particularly recently, though it is a case of “house” rather than home fighters there. That said, I think the fact you see that fight as a 116-112 to Sturm ( I scored it dead even), reflects perhaps a cultural difference on defence vs attack that forms the basis of why there is a cry of foul against Germany so often. Watching this fight with Geale, my impression was of Sturm having the better technical skills – he has a wonderful jab and nice counter left hook, but that he believed that if he used them sparingly, fighting a minute of each round he`d get the decision. It`s an attitude that he has had for some time, and an attitude that is often backed up by the judges. The impression this creates though is that international fans watch him performing within himself, looking like he is maybe getting overrun, but not worrying about it – and it is the lack of any worry or urgency – that need to aggressively stamp authority on a fight that annoys because for one it makes fights less exciting, but it also makes me feel that he expects/knows judges will give him every close round, it`s like a sense of entitlement. It isn`t just Sturm either – I`ve had this impression (and the paperchamp – unficiation ducking accusation) about a number of German-based fighters in the MW/SMW divisions – Ottke, Beyer, Sylvester, and maybe to a lesser extent Abraham (who I applaud for having the balls to enter the S6). So I think rather than throwing cheating accusations at Germany which are unfair, the handgrenade I would lob that way is that Germany has produced a lot of top 5 (but not no1) middles and supermiddles who have managed to become big stars in Germany while cruising both in fights and in their careers in general, and it is those guys being rewarded with close decisions that irritate people. Posted September 1, 2012 8:44 pmAlonzoI thought the Brits had a lot of culture as opposed to the ham fisted Kulture policies that Germany showed in the 20th century vis a vi the Kaiser and some other unmentionables. Posted September 1, 2012 8:01 pmAlonzoI kept saying in posts before the fight–Sturm has a lot of miles on him. Posted September 1, 2012 7:57 pmgermannewsthe result was absolutely ok. i am also happy that the “living legens” (sturm says about himself) lost this fight. he was already lucky that they gave him the macklin fight. so i hope he will follog his big mouth that he want to destroy arthur abraham after he beat geale ;-) Posted September 1, 2012 7:46 pmChillin’I really like Geale vs Chavez Jnr. The thing is, Jnr still has to kill himself to get to 160 and that has to take a toll in the later rounds and we saw what a pace Geale sets. His output beat Sturm tonight moreso that his punching. Geale has good defence inside and outside and Chavez would struggle IMO with the pace down the stretch……. Posted September 1, 2012 7:10 pmmr. quigleydid the great prophet predict the outcome? Posted September 1, 2012 6:59 pmShaneFinally that ducking paper champion is no more! Sturm was a plague to REAL champions. If he wants another paper strap he may actually have to beat someone. Maravilla is the REAL middlewieght champion anyway and all these belts are meaningless unless you beat HIM. PED Jr. is about to get smoked without Texas “officials” protection and we will see the true ordinary powder puff puncher in the ring. Posted September 1, 2012 6:58 pmChillin’I really thought it would be if Sturm got the nod. I had it 116-112 (8-4) like two of the judges. I just thought from round 7 onwards Sturm could not handle the pace and by round 9 almost looked ready to go from exhaustion only throwing one jab at a time. But what a true warrior, he never gave up and gave his all in the last, again after 1 min looked gassed. I thought 2 of the cards were spot on and 116-112 for Sturm was crazy. Just my thoughts…….. Posted September 1, 2012 6:53 pmMr RubesI had Sturm winning by 116-112. Regardless, I wonder will all the primitive cultureless Brits finally drop the stupid record- “you can’t win a close fight in Germany”. What about the likes of Froch getting gifted over the likes of Dirrel and so on. Once again, Germany the FAIREST place to box. Posted September 1, 2012 6:52 pmozzyyep very strange – sometimes I wonder whether the judges actually watch the fight. Posted September 1, 2012 6:42 pmFirestarterThe last 30 sec. of the 12th round. reminded me of the last 30 sec. of the 12th round of Kessler – Froch Posted September 1, 2012 6:38 pmT22Close fight. Between four of us watching we are 2 to Geale 1 for Sturm and 1 for the draw. Fightnews got it 115-113 Sturm. Mine was the other way to Geale. Good fight. Posted September 1, 2012 6:27 pm1-2Thanks for the round by round. Couldnt find a stream and that helped what you 3 did. MW division just got a little more interesting after this and after tonight could get even more Posted September 1, 2012 6:26 pmFirestarterI agree..3 judges 8-4 4-8 4-8….that seems strange in my book. Posted September 1, 2012 6:25 pmozzyQuality fight – I had Geale by 1 rnd but wudn’t have been suprised if Sturm got it by a rnd – however I have no idea how the judges got the 8 rnds to 4 business? Posted September 1, 2012 6:17 pmLenin116:114 either way was no robbery, Chillin’. Posted September 1, 2012 6:15 pmChillin’Thank goodness. I thought the robbery was manifesting with the first card. Posted September 1, 2012 6:11 pmsuper_hookgreat job geale but the scoring is just crazy Posted September 1, 2012 6:09 pmWHAT!?!I’m wrapped and it doesn’t make me look like a goose for backing him in every story about this fight where the writers have disrespected Geales boxing abilities. Thanks again all for the round updates. Posted September 1, 2012 6:08 pmFirestarterGrats to Geale for winning TWICE in Germany on points….a very good fight. Posted September 1, 2012 6:07 pmWHAT!?!Thanks for the updates Lenin, Fire and Chill. Please post the decision, I hope Geale nicked it. Much appreciated. Posted September 1, 2012 6:06 pmLeninAnd the winner is Geale by SD. ozzyVery close fight – I think Geale just so that means Sturm will get the decision Posted September 1, 2012 6:05 pmFirestarterI have geale winning, but its a very close…a matter of activy / agression vs landed shots…I think geale have it Posted September 1, 2012 6:05 pmChillin’8-4 Geale. All the champs must respect his work rate and the fact he travels and wins in other champs back yards…… Posted September 1, 2012 6:04 pmLeninGeale walking through quite some fire, bravely firing off hooks. The last round is his round again, but both men gave it all. Very close fight, that will most likely go to Geale based on activity and aggressive fighting alone, not on best landed shots. Posted September 1, 2012 6:02 pmFirestarternot 10th, 11th of course Posted September 1, 2012 6:00 pmLeninRound 11 to Geale. Posted September 1, 2012 6:00 pmFirestarterSturm have a better defence…Sturm seems to be have digged deep….10th a close round Sturm starts best but Geale finishes best…this is going to be close Posted September 1, 2012 5:59 pmLeninBased only on activity and thrown shots, Geale is 3 rounds in front. Based on landed shots and harder punches, it’s close. Geale is more active in round 10, but Sturm landed the better shots. Posted September 1, 2012 5:55 pmChillin’6-3 Geale. Sturm throwing mostly one punch at a time sometimes a 1-2 …..thats it Posted September 1, 2012 5:53 pmFirestarterRound 9 to Sturm..I have Geale up by one round, but its close…good fight Posted September 1, 2012 5:52 pmLeninRound 9: both trading, both landing. But Sturm’s shots were better imo. Round to Strum. Posted September 1, 2012 5:51 pmLeninYou can actually see Sturm thinking. I think he’s doubting his chances. Geale is more active, has a good jab, good inside fight, whereas Sturm is relying on his brilliant jab. Round 8 AGAIN close. I got it 3 rounds each, with 2 rounds a draw. Posted September 1, 2012 5:47 pmChillin’Sturm ready to go…? Can’t stand this pace. Geale stepping right up just has to be careful not to walk into something…… Posted September 1, 2012 5:46 pmFirestarterEven rounds = Sturm rounds in Germany…but I think that Sturm might get tired by those body punches in some rounds Posted September 1, 2012 5:44 pmChillin’Geale stepped it up now. Sturm struggled with frenetic pace of that round. 2 USA judges though. Do they like hard pinching or volume punching? 4-3 Geale for my card….. Posted September 1, 2012 5:44 pmLeninRound 7 to Geale, Sturm very often under pressure. Geale’s infight is good, lots of hooks to Sturm’s body, slowing him down. Posted September 1, 2012 5:43 pmChillin’Sturm has found something last 2 rounds. Jab is ram rod like and keeping Geale from getting inside. Even fight 3-3 for mine…… Posted September 1, 2012 5:40 pmLeninRound 6 to Geale. High speed boxing by both, very good fight. Posted September 1, 2012 5:39 pmMixBe interesting to see where Chag vs Fury would take place. Fury needs some vital experiance out side of the UK, so maybe Germany or the USA :?: Posted September 1, 2012 5:37 pmChillin’They are breaking even on the outside but Sturm has no clue how to fight on the inside at least with the volume punching of Geale. 3 – 2 Geale. Posted September 1, 2012 5:35 pmLeninAnother close round that I’m giving to Strum for being more active. But Geale is like a terrier: not at the same skill level as Sturm, but aggressive as hell! Posted September 1, 2012 5:35 pmChillin’It’s obvious Sturm can’t box at this pace but can Geale keep it up? Amazing output by the Aussie. 2 rounds to 1 Geale. It looks like Sturm is fighting hard for a round and then taking alternate rounds off and hopes the Judges will see it for him. Sturm starting to look a tad shop worn from all those tough fights…….. Posted September 1, 2012 5:32 pmsuper_hookdanny waiting too long Posted September 1, 2012 5:31 pmLeninRound 4: Sturm uses less “ear muff defense”, is moving more. Very close round again, could go either way. Posted September 1, 2012 5:31 pmLenin3rd round: Sturm starts better, but Geale shakes him with a big shot. Sturm impressed, but gets active again near the end of the round. Posted September 1, 2012 5:27 pmLeninRound 2 goes to Sturm. Geale took some big ones, and there’s blood coming from one of his ears. Posted September 1, 2012 5:23 pmWHAT!?!I’m keeping an eye on your comments Lenin as I cannot get to watch this fight. Keep it up. Posted September 1, 2012 5:21 pmWHAT!?!However there are plenty of excuses for Fury. Fear being his best one just like when he ran from Price. Posted September 1, 2012 5:20 pmLeninGood first round, very close, but I’m giving it to Geale for throwing more combos. Posted September 1, 2012 5:19 pmLeninSturm’s physique is impressive as always. Let’s get ready to rrrrrrumble! Posted September 1, 2012 5:13 pmLeninNational anthems are being sung right now. Fight’s about to start.
