Great point Tark about Paul’s parables of him being a spiritual boxer and sprinter, which is all about comparing his willingness to sacrifice his body and material wellbeing for a place in heaven and just as an athlete sacrifices for the big win. Maybe Gurrero lost a bit of faith as the fight went on; taaking less chances perhaps because he was not willing to sacrifice or risk a KO for the win.

It’s Me, Ernie

Obviously you have no clue to what the definition of the word barbaric is…

Posted May 4, 2013 9:56 pm

TARK

Boxing is mentioned in the Bible… “I do not fight like a boxer who punches the air.” In a long reference to athletes who sacrifice creature comforts and pleasures for a chance at the glory of victory.. The theme of the parable was: Sacrificing pleasures and and comfort for a higher place in Heaven is far easier than the tremendous sacrifices an athlete makes.. And while very few athletes achieve fame and fortune, the sacrifice for God has more certain rewards.

Boxing is not barbaric… Gene Tunney didn’t think so.. Gentleman Jim Corbett didn’t think so.. The Klitschko Bros don’t think so.. Tommy Loughran didn’t think so.. Tommy Ryan didn’t think so.. Mike Gibbons didn’t think so.. Jimmy Satterly didn’t think so.

MMA can be barbaric… They’re trying to humanize it a little, but it’s still pretty far out there.

Hidalgo, that was NOT clever and again the Bible thumping is utterly CORNY on the part of you sycophants on here…If there is one sport a potentially fictional God has probable little interest for its BOXING which is barbaric no matter how we try to call it the “Sweet Science” etc…

“Hidalgo and Others are so desperate for FMJ to lose they have begun quoting scripture!!!” HUH? Really, SRed, I”ve told you several times before, you got me confused with someone else. I’m not dying for Mayweather to lose. In fact, I’ve said over and over and over that Guerrero has no chance in this fight. Perhaps you missed that while bowling with cats in slimey gutters? Perhaps if your reading and comprehension skills were as big as your mouth you would better be able to interpret the written word. Alas, you don’t even have a mustard seed of a brain.

Tark, many of the great Bible figures fell to temptation, especially the rich ones but like Manny they where still good and loving in essence and did not make materialism their god in private or public; but rather they repented over and over again while being spanked and humbled by God.

are you f’n kidding me TARK? NObody vouched for St. Pacquiao’s* piety more than you until Pacquiao* himself divulged what a cheating, drinking, gambling, womanizing, adulterer he was. also, check your eyesight. Berto was clinging to Guerrero’s right-arm in plain view of the ref, which is why the he didn’t object to Guerrero teeing-off on Berto with his left. perfectly legal if Berto insists on clinging to Guerrero’s arm. it’s also obvious (whether you believe it or not) that in the heat of battle Guerrero didn’t hear or recognize the bell ringing to end the final round. besides, all of your accusations of Guerrero’s sinful behavior have taken place within the context of a sport, which is not the focus of any bible i’ve heard of. yet you gave St. Manny* pass after pass after pass after pass egardless of his shady, cowardly, unethical, and sinful behavior towards fellow fighters and his own family. yet another chunk of your credibility crumbles and turns to dust.

Tark, it’s still a fight inside that ring. Most fighters no matter how nice they appear to be outside the ring are fiercely competitive like Holyfield, Ward and Guerrero. They won’t be giving bible study in there, they are trying to outbox and beat their opponents at just about any cost within the rules. It’s the referees job to warn them, take points way or disqualify them. Adrenalin and emotions are flying high. Good good referee is always needed in big fights. Fighters on the big stage do things their not even aware of like Ortiz ith his head butt of Floyd. He was too pumpe dup to even realize what he did. He transferred into a wild neanderthal. Tyson did the same. They want to fight and win at all costs. I hope this doesn’t happen tomorrow night. I think Floyd Sr. will save his son from a brutal stoppage.

Who interrupts the other boxer’s interview if they’re a Christian??? Who works in cahoots with a corrupt referee like Lou Moret if they’re a Christian??? Who makes a Greco-Roman Wrestling contest out of a fight if they’re a Christian???

Robert Garcia is one of the most decent people I have ever met. He’s not too far down the road from me. He treats people right, and he has always been a follower and believer in God. The media likes to fool most of you guys to think it’s some ploy of his, but he’s real. His father does overreact a bit because he loves his son and defends him to no end. Robert is a true believer in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Tomorrow, he will make believers of all the doubters. By the 6th round you doubters will be on your knees praying. A new champion is coming. Robert Guerrero will handle his new found fame with class, and I will also forgive you for doubting and bashing this true man of God. Please attend church the following day.

… “He that is spiritual”… Not too many people are really that spiritual. Therefore we shouldn’t be judging. You can achieve a certain spiritual level that imbues indelible wisdom. I would imagine that happens to maybe one in 100,000—or probably a lot less. Even the Pope is infallible only in matters of faith and morals, not judging individuals. Most people should just leave judging to God unless they’re on jury duty. We can judge peoples actions but not their motives.

@ Gold…. According to Strauss a Pilistine (Floyd) “is guided by materialism and disdainful of intellectual or artistic values.” … How many recording artists and other show business people does Floyd know and how many show up for Floyd’s fights? … Wasn’t Floyd on Dancing With the Stars? Isn’t he an artist in the ring? Doesn’t Floyd value intelligent boxing over crude slugging? Doesn’t he talk about his daughters’s achievements in school? Isn’t he a supporter of social and political progress, and puts his money where his mouth is? These are all things he should know about Floyd just from the media.. But does he really know Floyd? NO. That doesn’t stop him from making judgements… God did say, “Judge not! … Lest you be judged.”

Guerrero has to do his part in building up the fight… So he’s got to have some angle. It seems like this worked for Pacquiao and Ward, why not Guerrero? Floyd’s angle for a long time was being a badass. That worked really well for Ali and Tyson for a long time.. It works better financially than being a goody two shoes.. At least in Boxing, a sport where you need to draw fans who love to watch people knock each other out.. However it’s a lot of effort and at some point you feel like just throwing the whole scam over … LIke Tyson, I think that’s where Floyd is at.

Jesus drove the money changers out of the Temple with a whip of cords and Peter used a sword to cut off somebody’s ear off — before Jesus did some corner work on the guy and reattached it to his head.. Then you you had David taking down Goliath — and then taking his sword and cutting his head off in righteous fashion.. Eggy Baptiste: It’s not nor never was a question of being free to have faith, but when you use that to attack people while saying “don’t attack me back, Jesus loves me” that’s ridiculous and makes you a “religious hate monger” ..last I checked, that’s not what is taught in the Bible. They’ve been doing nothing but judging, making outwardly xenophobic comments, and bringing families into it… then speak about “Jesus Christ” …that’s NOT ok, IMO. I don’t respect that at all, and it seems satanic to me. Then bringing one of those “let me touch you for $60 to heal your illness” to make a name on All Access. One of those prayer cloth venders. That’s sad. No thank you.

Posted May 2, 2013 7:01 pm

Eggy Baptiste

People should be free to have a faith in a god, and to proclaim that faith if they see fit. Every man should have freedom of conscience, even though it may be nothing more than a comforting delusion (which is what religious belief basically is). For me, Mayweather just has too much for Guerrero in every department. Guerrero may make the final bell, and he may have some positive moments in the fight, but it’ll be another “W” in the column for Mayweather, for sure.

Posted May 2, 2013 6:54 pm

Q

“Little money” ok, and what are you? Big money? I’m guessing you’re all the Christian the Guerrero’s are or what? but it’s also very likely that you aren’t religious at all and decided to make this to demonize Floyd while the Guerrero’s are putting their foots in their mouths left and right, and acting like animals. Paul, you’re also doing the devils work son.

Those evil ass people are talking about “God” all day, and it’s being hyped up? Ruben talking about God then immediately going into a hateful rage filled tirade? That’s God? I’m not religious, and I honestly really am helped out of it because of things like that, it disgust me. I’m not a hateful nasty person and I don’t believe in any specific “God” or religion, then you have those “Christians” actively trying to get fans and criticize another man at every turn, in the midst of claiming to be christian. FMJ didn’t start the attacks, they’ve been ACTIVELY JUDGING Floyd since this fight was decided. If that’s a Christian, heck… what are they good for? Judging then saying DON’T JUDGE ME THOUGH BECAUSE “JESUS FORGIVES AND LOVES ME.” Those people actively work for the devil, because if it’s not of God it’s against God, from what I’ve understood… and that’s not godly.

Guerrero has put blasphemy and hypocrisy on center stage for this bout, and I’ll like to see if Satan works in this match and he wins, so he can continue speaking about “God” and that blasphemous pastor can “bless” more high profile fighters in the future.. I think he needs more names than Holyfield many moons ago and his “hot hands.” Team guerrero disgust me honestly, they’re the worst. “Woman beater” Ruben says, but he was earlier saying that FMJ should do his time like a man, and that solitary is for “snitches and cowards” glorifying prison and thuggery. Ruben is also in a video calling Nate Jones a “puto African” …those guys are very xenophobic, blasphemous, and speak the most crap. One member of Guerrero’s team was verbally harassing an afro-american security guard because he told Robert not to sign his shirt because he can get fired… I’ve never seen more racism and hate from a FMJ opponent. Best case scenario is that he puts Robert in the hospital than slaps his wife with his ****. That’s just what I think such scum deserves.

“To add to it, do we all remember naseem hamed reciting a prayer in the ring before he fought Barrera? People were offended, some were booing, and I must admit it (the prayer) made me feel uncomfortable.”

Let’s get a couple of things straight, folks. God is not a part-time worker nor is “faith” a part-time exercise in convenience–although many make a habit of using it as such. Take a couple of hours and read all of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament. Then you’ll understand why true faith need be no bigger than “the size of a mustard seed.” You’ll also understand why that mustard seed is full of all of you. If you have true faith. Then, try to understand that for a person who has true faith, displaying and acting upon that faith is no more unnatural than smiling. Or crying. Or breathing. Even if others have little or no faith at all.

Why is it that playing national anthems is traditionally acceptable, but praying before a fight is not? I assure you that most national anthems did not exist before the advent of praying, or worship, or spirituality, or faith.

First of all, I don’t recall Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever referring to himself as “Little Money.” WTF did that come from? There’s no big money. Just Jr. “Money.”

But no, I don’t resent “such behavior” as when a person openly displays and professes his belief and spirituality. It’s his misunderstanding of how his faith works that annoys me. Robert’s belief in God will help him to achieve things in life. But it’s his belief, not God himself, that helps Robert–or anyone else for that matter. But on May 4 it won’t matter if God is sitting on one of Robert’s shoulders and Jesus on the other. “Money” will beat him. Praise the Lord.

I don’t think Christians or Muslims should have to answer for the actions of the unstable which Mike Tyson was at the time. There are actions in all sport that of course are not what you would expect out of a true follower of religion. I think that humans are imperfect and sin would pretty much answer why some things like this would happen. I agree with below. There is no place for your god in sport. Sports is universal and the only goal should be to win within the rules. Any deity shouldn’t care who wins, grab your beverage of choice and let them play it out.

And I could imagine J.C. of the bible doing a little sparring in the gym. Seems like he could have a jab that can keep you at bay. Watch out for those wirey types.

junior, this is a sport, not a malicious fight. I am a atheist but am very familiar with Christian teachings and I don’t think they have anything against sport. Boxing is first and foremost a sport. Friends have fought in the squared circle before. You don’t schedule street fights with your friends, they usually only happen while drinking. I used to hang out with a group of guys I sparred with but the moment punches started to fly outside the ring we broke it up. I don’t think Christ would have a problem with Ward boxing.

Faith is belief. In boxing, aside from skills and physical talents, you have to believe in yourself to win.

Posted May 2, 2013 3:24 pm

Or since we r talking about ward, …… Can u imagine Jesus Christ hitting you with an elbow then nailing u with his head???

Posted May 2, 2013 3:20 pm

junior

The face**** not yhe faith ….typo

Posted May 2, 2013 3:17 pm

I’m a Christian, but I’m not a preacher! f you PREACH your faith, you shouldn’t be punching people in yhe faith for a living. It’s like ward, he calls himself the son of god, then busts people up in a boxing ring. Can you imagine Jesus Christ hitting you with a 1-2 then ripping a left to the body?!?!?!?

Philly, Chicago and NYC still do produce the best fighters. Problem is they’re fighting and killing each other in the streets now rather than in the ring.

Whether real or hypocrit, 99.9% of all boxers including Floyd Mayweather make it obvious that they believe God rules in boxing and all that is good and beiutiful. To deny this fact is as pathological as atheism itself.

As for faith, I say to each their own. Someone who likes to gloat about their faith, and living a Christian life, should have that right. And someone who sees a chink in that person’s personality by the things they do should call them out on it, if they feel the need… But one thing that one group of people always seems to do is judge other’s, which is supposed to be contradictory to their teachings. Other than that, It really doesn’t matter, short of some freak accident, the best fighter will win, regardless.

“Mexico is not America, its mexico.” and the U.S.A. is not America, it’s the U.S.A. America is a continent NOT a country. the west-coast of America extends from Alaska all the way to Argentina. also, PR has always been a territory and never a sovereign country. honorary citizenship without voting rights doesn’t make them “American” only U.S. property and thus our responsibility . . . (heavy sigh).

If Robert Guerrero had horns growing out of the top of his head, up next to his hair by his receding hairline…he’d look like The Devil himself.

He looks more like Satan than anyone I’ve ever seen in the photo accompanying this story.

allow me to do the thinking for you: where is Canelo from other than the west coast of America? Jalisco has a pacific coast. Trout is from New Mexico, i.e., the southwest. what’s the confusion here? Mikey Garcia, Mares, Floyd, Ward, west coast or southwest fighters. what’s the confusion here?

im still trying to think of all these successful western US boxers???? Floyd lives in Vegas but he is from Michigan.

I’m loving the Floyd Sr v Ruben Guerrero stuff better than anything else lol. Don’t know much about Ruben Guerreros career as a fighter other than he got knocked out by almost everyone he fought (courtesy of boxrec) I think they should put it on the undercard and let em fight it out.

Pacquiao* is the phoniest holy-roller in Boxing. an ignorant peasant who simultaneously proclaims his piety then proceeds to gamble, bed starlets, cheat on his wife, etc. what’s ironic is that the ore pious Pacquiao* proclaimed himself to be, the less successful he became, culminating in his career-ending Mexecution at the fists of Marquez whose humility and piety are self-evident not self-proclaimed.

“Philly, Chi Town or the Big Apple”? what decade are you living in Stauss? none of these towns or regions consistently produce the best fighters. you need to cast your eyes westward and step into the 90s. the west coast and the southwest are the regions that consistently produce the toughest and most successful fighters (see Canelo v. Trout).

skills pay bills and win fights not faith! Besides Gods doesnt care who wins! He just wants the glory and honor he is due. Both fighters praise God!

If Floyd is “little” money then who is “big” money ??? It’s obvious that who ever wrote this does not like Floyd lol

Floyd Mayweather is the biggest hypocrite around. He’s envious of what Guerrero possesses, which is true, honest sincere faith, and a lot of fans love him for that. He has been through a difficult time in his own personal life with his wife. He had nothing, no money, no sponsorships, nothing. And look at him today. He has the opportunity to make enough money to pay off all of his bills, and spread His word to millions of people, including children that look up to athletes. He can make an impact for the better, something Floyd Mayweather didn’t do nor wanted to do. Floyd is all about Money, Materials and his ego. A perfect mix for disaster. May 4th, there will be a new deserving welterweight boxing champion of the world. Someone that understands why he is the position he’s in and will do good things and not concern himself with an ego, materials or money.
