Tyson was NEVER the SAME fighter after Kevin Rooney was fired!! Roach cannot do anything for Malignaggi that will help him to beat Broner!

Dino, from Youngstown, Ohio.

I think Broners work rate and youth will win this fight, PM was good for boxing , flashy and the kid can box too. PM is 140 pounder, hands down. Broner by late beating, the ref with step in and stop it.

TARK

Juan Diaz wasn’t very big or strong, even for a lightweight… He wasn’t very gifted… He was fairly rugged and had good punch resistant for the first few years of his career… He couldn’t defend exceptionally well… and he was a little soft because he didn’t believe in strength training. He was called the Baby Bull and he did have some baby fat on him.

He was a good straight ahead pressure fighter who had great cardio conditioning. Diaz fought wars of attrition like Joe Frazier — only he could throw equally well with both hands. Guys with that particular style usually have a finite lifespan as a boxer. Paulie got him at the right time. Broner is on a whole different level from the Juan Diaz who fought Paulie.

remember what he did to Juan Diaz. Diaz was a rough and tumble fighter just like Broner. Styles make fights.

As quick as Malignaggi is he does get hit a a lot and Broner hits hard, he proved that by stopping the usually durable Gavin Rees.

Boxing is a hard game, especially if you can’t punch. Malinaggi has had a great run, but I don’t think he can hold Broner off all night.

Paulie is talking a good fight but it’s diffucult to see him getting anywhere with Broner. Broner looks to be the real deal.

Breeze

This is a good and logical step up for Broner. He does not have to worry about power when fighting Malignaggi because he cannot punch, but he gets to fight a tricky guy who has been in with some really great fighters(although he lost against all of them). It will be fun to see how he deals with Malignaggi. For Malignaggi’s part of it, he really does not have a lot of options for big paydays. He has become a bit of a gatekeeper type fighter.

cano took morales fight on 8days notice..was doing well til he ran outa gas..plus paulie broke hand..i agree with u rjack58 that ref stopped mares-deleon 2 quickly..but disagree about deleon cating him with something 2 ko mares…abner mares is a beast!great young 3division champ that fights nothing but the best available…time 2 put him on some P4P lists…atleast top 15

I don’t care what you all say. Broner gonna have a long night. Paulie just need to jab jab jab! He also has two muscle Broner around, don’t let Broner who’s a short lightweight suddenly become a welterweight. But the jab is the key.

Q, I’m merely stating a point…for the supposed GOAT that just fought last weekend they ain’t got shiz to say about him!!! LET THE BALL SHINERS BEGIN WITH THE ANTICS…HERE WE GO WITH THE FRAUD CIRCUS!!!!

K.C. – Yet you’re slinging his name around the circuits. That’s the very definition of being CURRENT. You don’t even like the guy and YOU’RE the person keeping his name circulating between bouts, jaja. But of course his name is in this thread and will be in others. They aren’t going to do threads about him every day between fights.

All the supposed hype over Floyd and not a single article on the the Fraud…. Tells me alot…Not much interest in the guy other than the ten or so die hard admirers (ball shiners) that try to boast the guy!!! So much for P4p…goat…. Yeah right, what ever!!!

And Cano was beaten BADLY and STOPPED by an OLD Erik Morales a year earlier.

“Paulie barely beat Cano who is a face-first fighter who lacks quickness or boxing skills other than toughness and bravado.” But, rjack58, Cano consistently beat Paulie to the punch. That belies an edge in speed on Cano’s part.

Posted May 9, 2013 5:27 pm

Hidalgo

“That is pure malarkey. Paulie is only 32 and moves as well as ever.” I disagree with you Tark. Paulie has slowed down. I’m not saying he’s heavy-legged, but he doesn’t move as well as he did, say when he fought Amir Khan, and his reflexes have slowed a bit. I thought he got tagged by Cano a lot more than he should have, but Cano was too fast for him.

Posted May 9, 2013 5:25 pm

rjack58

ICherry , what’s up?? Paulie fought Cotto almost 7 years ago and boxing like all sports are physical contests of diminishing returns. It’s like the human condtion; one starts out as a baby, grows up to an adult, then declines into ‘old age’. Paulie is declining into old age at this point in his career, while Broner is still on the rise not yet in his prime. Paulie barely beat Cano who is a face-first fighter who lacks quickness or boxing skills other than toughness and bravado. Broner will walk him down, cut off the ring and beat him to the punch as Paulie fights off of the ropes.

Posted May 9, 2013 5:07 pm

rjack58

Tark you are CORRECT!! What I’m saying is that Paulie DOESN’T move as good as he used, running was never mentioned. Paulie is a MOVER and fights all over the ring, but LESS than he used to, and YES Broner will walk him down and defend, then counter.

Posted May 9, 2013 4:54 pm

Icherrypic@135

If Paulie took Cotto’s punches without being dropped he won’t have a problem with Broner. Broner power at Welterweight is unknown

Broner will stop Malignaggi, this fight will be easy for him, much like the Rees fight. I can see Adrien talking on Alexander perhaps after that, or maybe Amir Khan? Personally I would like to see him fight Guerrero. I think Broner would mix it up with Guerrero and Robert might have a better chance than he did against Floyd. I believe Broner to be No2 P4P right now after Floyd. I think he would get past Marquez and I think he’s better than Ward.

Posted May 9, 2013 3:32 pm

TARK

Jackson writes.., “Malignaggi, as he displayed against his last opponent Pablo Cano, has gotten very heavy legged as he’s gotten older cannot move like he once did” … That is pure malarkey. Paulie is only 32 and moves as well as ever. Cano didn’t chase him. When Ali fought Ron Lyle he proved that running and dancing—when somebody isn’t chasing you—is a sure fire way to lose rounds, get hit, and get out-pointed. Ali got seriouly behind on points, stopped running, and won the fight.

Cano didn’t chase Paulie that much so Paulie didn’t run that much. When Paulie was several years younger Ricky Hatton didn’t chase him. Floyd Sr. told Hatton, “We’re boxing him. We’re not going to chase him Rick. Listen to me. This is boxing. Ain’t a track meet. This punk can’t box, so let’s make it easy. You jab him. You defend. You counter his jab. That jab is all he throws. You start chasing runners you will get hit. They need you to walk into punches. Let them do the jiggaboo all over the ring. Everybody can see who’s a fighter and who’s a dancing fool.”

Broner doesn’t dance. He walks you down. He defends. He counters. He creates space for himself—which isn’t running. He’s comfortable with a guy who runs and jabs. They’re the easiest guys in the world to fight … If you don’t chase them.

For me is Malignaggi true warrior, but Broner could win… But later Broner have to fight against harder and tougher fighters like Maidana, Garcia or Matthysse… I saw powder punches from Gavin Rees, which hits Broner clearly and i imagine, what will be Broner doing, if he will get punches from fighters like these three…

Broner is quick, fast and strong this match up is good for him because he’s facing a battle tested fighter. Paulie lacks power but he has a lot of ring savy. He has enough experience to make Broner look bad. Broner didnt do well against Ponce’s jab and if it’s one thing Pualie has is a Jab. His right is a powder puff power punch. I know thats an oximoron but it’s true his power punch has nothing on it. That being said what does Broner need to do to win. side step the jab and double hook him and finish with a power right. I like Paulie and i wish him all the best, i’m glad he’s doing commentating on Showtime he does a great job at it. Great second career.

This is the sad part about it being 90% business and 10% boxing now whether you agree with me or not it’s the sad truth for us the fans, broner gets more credit for beating Gavin Rees than Andre ward gets for smashing world class fighter chad Dawson, Carl froch, and mikkel Kessler, and I’m going to say it again if it wasn’t for broners loud mouth and his shell defense that he doesn’t use that well they wouldn’t have ever even tried to make him the next best thing stop believing you can get there caus of skills and talent NO sadly NO if they can make money of you your it!

Falcon, what’s up?? I’m not overrating Broner!! Broner fought Ponce De Leon 6 fights AGO (March 2011)!! If he had struggled with De Leon in his LAST fight I would agree with you 100%. Broner has improved a lot since the De Leon fight, plus De Leon is a southpaw and Broner has had limited experience against southpaws. Mares was getting tagged ALL night by De Leon’s left hand and was staggered by it 3 times during the fight as wonderful as they say Mares looked. I think Jay Nady stopped the fight prematurely and I could see De Leon landing one of those big left hands and putting Mares down for the count.

Hidalgo, what’s up?? Paulie is a warrior and still a good fighter, for the money he’s getting (~$1M) it’s decent but he was going to get that whoever he fought. Malignaggi can still move around the ring but not as good as Broner, his slickness will be offset by Broner’s quickness and slickness, but Paulie gains everything by winning. Don’t think Roach can help him much in preparing for Broner either.

i think the author is overrating broners power n defense…ponce deleon just go t hammered 2 the floor twice in his exciting fight with abner mares, who was fighting at 118lb a lil over a yr ago..dont get me wrong, mares can bang..his ko% is lower bcuz of the toprate competition he fights, but broner couldnt even make deleon blink at 130lb..never mind deleon is a 126lber…broner got hit blenty by the slow deleon…also got tatooed alot in his fight with quintero,a lite puncher that backed broner up and outboxed him with just good footwork b4 being robbed of the decision…Paulie has 2 be in tip top shape and not break a hand, which was not the case in cano fight, but broner could be in 4 a long nite….

Pauline’s defens has diminished. He relies on his speed to move out of punches which as of lately he hasn’t really been able to do too well. Now Broner hasn’t shown the ability to move. He showed he can run a bit as he did against Ponce. Everyone else has came straight to him. This fight will show if he can move and fight at the same time. Something he really hasn’t had to show. So there is still a ? On that. All that said I pick Broner by late TKO or decision.

“Legitimate contenders and fighters in those weight classes miss out on opportunities and as a result may never get to fight for a title or get to challenge everyone at the top of their weight class.”

Even if those fighters did have the desire to capitalize on those opportunities, champions still have mandatory opponents that they have to fight, so there’s still a possiblity that they’d never get the chance to face a champ unless they were a mandatory. Where is Paulie’s “mandatory” opponent? Champ Paulie does have a mandatory opponent–WBA Interim Champ Chaves, I believe– but he can also fight someone else–before he fights his mandatory–as long as he fights his mandatory opponent within the time period required by the WBA. I think that’s nine months. Yet Paulie is fighting Broner around eight months after his fight with Cano–so there’s no way in h3ll that he’ll be able to fight his mandatory within the required time limit. I’m thinking Paulie has been offered a lucrative contract to be a fight commentator/analyst for ShowTime, and that Paulie is ready to cash out and retire honorably as a boxer.

On another note: Jackson gave a pretty good analysis of the upcoming Malignaggi/Broner scenario. Paulie is slower and still has very limited punching power. He does not move as well as he used to. Broner weighed around 150 when he fought Rees, probably a little less when he fought Demarco. Slower or not Paulie does have the ability to move around the ring to stay away from Broner, but in the process of doing that he won’t score any points so in my book, any way you look at it, Broner is going to win this fight. Likely by stoppage, possibly by UD.

But no matter what, no one who has followed Paulie’s boxing career, can rightfully say that he’s afraid of anyone, or that he’s not a true warrior. As stated in an article on ringsidebygus.com, “On June 10, 2006 Malignaggi, the trash talking Sicilian lost to Miguel Angel Cotto by 12-round UD. Malignaggi suffered a cut over his left eye, a broken a bone in his cheek and was bleeding from his nose and mouth yet he refused to surrender. You gotta respect Malignaggi for the heart, guts and determination he showed during the bout.”

Paulie is not afraid of a scrap and he’s not afraid to lose. I’d like to see him go out as a champ but that’s just not going to happen. Still, I’m surprised–even if he does want to stop boxing after his upcoming fight (which he hasn’t stated yet)–that he would pick a fireball like Adrien Broner for his next bout.

Prof Konje, what’s up?? I’m not dismissing Paulie – his fight against Pablo Cano tells me he can’t beat Broner. I for one wouldn’t have been surprised if Cano had gotten the WIN in that fight, Paulie barely pulled that fight out and was in bad shape in the later rounds. Broner is younger, hungry and has better skills than Cano and Paulie who’s on the downside of his career. On top of that Paulie has NO punch to keep Broner off of him. His legs are real heavy too, so he can’t use the ring like he used to. If he doesn’t have a punchers chance and he can’t outbox Broner how can he win?

Posted May 9, 2013 12:56 pm

rjack58

KangriPR, what’s up?? I see your point and I agree to an extent. I don’t think that Broner’s afraid to fight Garcia, Garcia said he’ll be moving up to 147lbs soon so that fight could happen. The way I see it is GBP wants to RUN boxing so that means having the RECOGNIZED champion in most of the weight classes. So if Broner and/or Danny Garcia fight that will be one less champion that GBP has. At this point in Malignaggi’s career he’s on the downside of his career, he’s not a big EARNER, so he’s expendable.

I would not dismiss Paulie. I disagree with the author of the article regarding Broner and ring generalship. Paulie has been around a while. Even though he may not be a knock out artist, he can box. However if Broner does get by Paulie, there are plenty of real punchers waiting for him (and I’m looking forward to it).

Yes, it is very hard to see a Malinaggi win, but I know a lot of us are just wishing he could pull it off! I would just like to hear what Broner would say if Paulie were to beat him. I sure as Hell don’t want to hear Broner’s mouth after he wins!

Posted May 9, 2013 12:12 pm

KangriPR

rjack58- the truth is Broner wants nothing to do with the big boys at 140. He might “front” like he will challenge Danny, but that isn’t going to happen. Additionaly, like DSG, Lamont Peterson is his buddy so that fight isn’t going to happen and I will have a hard time believing he wants anything to do with Lucas. You can count Rios and Alvarado out due to their Top Rank affiliations. (* I would love to see Rios v Broner*). 147 has bigger money match-ups for Broner, plus I can see Broner in there with Amir Khan in the near future after Paulie.

Broner is just testing the WATERS at 147lbs, a win puts him in a good position at 135lb, 140lbs and 147lbs. Broner could probably drop back down to face Danny Garcia, or stay at 147lbs and face Amir Khan. those are probably the fighters that he will face after defeating Malignaggi.

boxingISlife

I think Broner is being overrated in this article. Paulie is a decent test, and it’s a couple of wights than what he is used to fighting at. Paulie can’t punch but he can box and move. If Broner is slow, Paulie can outbox him, but the problem is, he seems to fade in the the championship rounds, so Broner could eventually get to him.

I think Broner will win, but there are going to be bigger tests than the Magic man to come, and Broner hasn’t been in with the caliber of fighters Malignaggi has been in with and some hard hitters too, and has always shown a great chin.

Posted May 9, 2013 10:59 am

I think it’s all part of the match Broner safely plan. Matched with another notorious non-puncher, the easy to hit Broner has a win win situation. Even if he loses he won’;t get knocked out and he can say he’s going back to his natural weight. Broner is HBO’s darling right now they don’t want anything to happen to him……..yet.

MNboxingFAN – Sean

What I don’t like is that a champion from one weight class gets to butt to the front of the line and challenge for another title in a different weight class. Legitimate contenders and fighters in those weight classes miss out on opportunities and as a result may never get to fight for a title or get to challenge everyone at the top of their weight class. In an era where fighters keep jumping up weight class and of catch weights and silly things like “diamond belts” and other nonsense what can you expect? It wouldn’t be so bad except that it’s common knowledge Broner has no plans to campaign at 147 and will drop back down in weight. Broner isn’t the first and won’t be last to do this… from the likes of Roy Jones Jr. to Mayweather and Pacquiao… it’s been going on for a long time, but it doesn’t mean the fans have to like it. Sad thing is Broner will be the stronger fighter come fight night. I agree. It’s a bad match up for Paulie.
