European High Command

People want to give more credit to Gonzalez for dominating 6 1/2 rounds then gimping out after vs Burns than they give to Khan for dominating Maidana for 9 rounds then taking a beating like a man for the last 3 and getting the result.

There are plenty of jobs out there where you can quit when things get difficult, but professional boxing is an exception, champions are admired because they go above and beyond and exemplifying a do or die attitude.

Chelo wilted. He gimped.

”Coulda” ”Shoulda” ”Woulda”……usual C.R.A.P from haters. Burns won it fair and square, had more heart, more stamina, paced himself better, came on strong when it mattered! NUFF SAID!

The author conveniently forgets that a fight is over 12 rounds and not 6 or 7! He also needs to realise that Burns turned it on in the 8th and 9th. He outlasted his opponent, who wilted after his FAILED effort to take Burns out in the 7th. Burns would be better prepared and less rusty after his long layoff in a rematch, and would take the win more easily. Fact here is Burns WON LEGITAMATELY.

The factor you are a twat.

Burns was rusty and took a while to get going, but you got to admit Ricky came out of that pivotal 7th round the boss – Gonzales had knocked out 17 of his 22 wins and none of those were the kind of opponent like Ricky thta would just keep coming and put it all on the line.

Gonzalez simply wasn’t ready for someone as hard as Ricky – and as talented as he was (and he was great, beacuse he made Ricky look amateurish at times) if you come lookin for a title, you better be ready for the person that holds that title to not want to relinquish it for love nor money, and as challenger, you have to have the BALLS to wrest thta belt from the champ.

Burns is still the champ, and deservedly so.

the factor

Any one who is satisfied or impressed with burn’s victory is just another pathetic UK sports fan. He was handed a boxing lesson by a far superior boxer. Burns is tough with fighting heart but has little in the way of boxing skill. He landed a few shots in the 7th when Gonzales force him to brawl but hardly landed a decent scoring blow through out the fight. Even the 8th and 9th which were the only rnds he won were only dew to inactivity by Gonzales. Gonzales lacked stamina and will to win when all he had to do was turn lefty, jab with the right hand and stay on his feet to win. The disrespect shown with the booing of Gonzales when he entered the ring and when the Puerto RIcan anthem was played confirms many UK sports fans are the lowest life forms on the planet. Just take a look at your soccer fans if you don’t agree. Any one taking a shot at P R boxers compared to Scottish just let me mention a few names. Trinidad, Ortiz Benitez Gomez Serrano Escobar Torres De Leon De Jesus Rosario Camacho Espada Escalero. Every one of them better than Scottlands best.

Gonzalez surprised me with is set of skills,,,too bad he needs to go to the Wizard of Oz for a heart and stamina,,lol,,,if Ricky had that set of skills PFM would be in trouble because Ricky would bring also a huge heart and great stamina,,,Boxing is a tough sport,,,there are plenty of naturally gifted talented guys,,,but when the waters get deep only those born to be boxers will swim to the other side and not drown,,Ganzalez gas out and mentally quit,,,nothing more to that,,,if?? he can learn from this fight,,,,reconsiders his boxing commitment,,,and decides to give it another try,,,maybe he can make some noise,,,peace

Ironic that the 7th rnd was the one that beat Gonzalez. Was gassed. To honest I don’t even think there was anything wrong with the wrist. Corner were rubbing the legs.

This was a world title fight Gonzalez should have been prepared to finish with broken hands and/or broken jaw – he could have used his jab to try to keep Burns off however the truth is that Gonzalez gave up whether that’s because he couldn’t keep Ricky off him or he was exhausted is irrelevant he’s using the injured hand/arm as an excuse – he bottled it. Of course if Burns fights as badly in his next fight I’ll get me money on Vazquez or Abril in the unification.

PublicEnemy…Have you seen the fight? if so you cant possibly be sayimg that this guy never swallowed n quit. It was a classic case of a big hitting bully that couldn’t believe Burns had taken his power then quit. The guy is a lovely cute boxer puncher but that aint enough at that level. You cant quit because the Ricky Burns’s of this world will never lie down. Gonzales’s corner couldn’t believe he wanted to turn it in also. He quit n that’s a fact man.

C Monzon. Its obvious you’ve never laced on a glove otherwise you wouldnt be saying those things. I boxed amateur and won a few but lacked respect of others. When I lost for the first time I had a new found respect, especially when it took many months to regain confidence to even get back in there. All fighters deserve respect whatever the level they are.

albeziel – Not all boxers can take vast amounts of punishment despite being boxers. In my opinion like I said is that Gonzalez is an on top fighter who likes to give but not receive. And as he was hitting with both hands I dont believe the hand broke. I need proof and if I get it then I’ll admit my mistake.

I must admit, I was furious the fight did not continue. When I sat down and watched the fight again this morning over a coffee and without emotions involved, Chelo cleary injured his hand in the seventh. I knew Burns was ultra tough, but I was wrong in thinking he could outbox Chelo. Chelo looked amazing. He was poised, crisp, and strong as an ox. I feel that with a better trainer/training camp he would clear out that division. That being said, a championship fight is 12 rounds and Ricky was the last man standing. Congrats to Ricky and the Scots!

Yeah right, lets see if Burns gives him a rematch, after all González will become #1 challenger again.

Posted May 12, 2013 9:24 am

He quit 1) because he had hit Ricky with everything he had, and Ricky took it all and kept coming, which realy did break his heart. And 2) as a few of his own fans said before the fight, his stamina isnt the best. You do not have ur legs massaged because u have an injured hand!!!! Anyway kiddies, I now have a 8 hour drive home after a ruff mornings sleep in the car

Posted May 12, 2013 9:18 am

albeziel

Challengers are hungry for titles so they can win more Money, winning the fight on points and then quiting is because something serious happened to his hand. Can’t believe the comment where someone mentions that he quit because he didn’t like being hit, Jesus! A comment with no logic, he is a boxer
for crying out loud

Posted May 12, 2013 9:13 am

When he hit Rick with the 3 straight rights in-a-row on the ropes I realy thought Rick was ready to go. I’ve been a fan of Ricky since the Arthur fight, but I never realised he was as tough as he showed last night

Posted May 12, 2013 9:10 am

The atmosphere was incredible from the Simpson/choi ring walks onwards, and that was a ward/gatti kinda fight, I realy enjoyed it. Burns had me frustrated tho, and in the 7thwhen Gonzalez had him on the ropes I was shouting ”your gonna get fckin stopped” lol

Posted May 12, 2013 9:06 am

T22

Junior. If you got no legs you got no power. Are you sure they were massaging Gonzalez legs or trying to find his balls. Gonzalez was firing with both hands until the finish. My take on this is that he has great skills but is an on top fighter. When he starts taking punishment he dont like it. Hungry challengers normally go out on their sheild. Hope you enjoyed all the fights before hand.

Posted May 12, 2013 9:00 am

Of you look at how González defends himself is no surprise he broke his hand, in a rematch he will get a KO victory against Burns.

Posted May 12, 2013 8:59 am

junior

U ever needed a leg massage because of a broken wrist? Lol. All respect to the guy for winning the early rounds, but this wasn’t a 8 round fight. I was however disappointed in rickys performance. Everything was straight and flat, but on the plus side he showed a Manchester United kind of side to his game ie- win even when performing badly. Also he proved his is one tough, iron chinned SOB

Posted May 12, 2013 8:57 am

Public ….. I was sitting ring side buddy, and there was no injury. He gassed! His corner were massaging his legs and doing everything they could to wake him up. He won the early rounds, then gassed in round 7 after hitting Ricky with EVERYTHING he had

Gonzalez showed no balls in there. Jeff Fenech, Joe Calzaghe, Julian Jackson and countless others have fought on with broken hands. Jeff Fenech broke both his hands within the first 3 rounds versus Marcos Villasana and stillwent the full 12 and won. Gonzalez quitting really puts into perspective how tough Arthur Abraham was fighting with a broken jaw. I want to hear the proof of this broken hand of Gonzalez. I think it might be fake.

Posted May 12, 2013 8:35 am

RagamuffinMan

Amazed at reading about the injury. The guy was out on his feet. No way was there an injury. He blew himself out and daren’t admit it. The author of this article needs to look seriously at what he’s saying. Even the corner guys were stunned. Gonzales quit on his stool for no reason other than a broken heart, not a broken hand/wrist.

Ok we know Burns isn’t the most talented guy in the world. He admits as much himself and he never is anything but polite. He never says he’s gonna do this and that to his opp. He met a more talented guy last night and he was nearly stopped. But he came through because he has GRADE A level guts. For all Broner’s natural athleticism, guts is also a thing you can’t buy. Even if he lost last night, Burns still would have had nothing to be ashamed of. He’s a class act and a credit to the game.

THIS FIGHT WAS A SET UP, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A FIGHTER SO COMPLETELY OUTBOXED IN EVERY DEPARTMENT, THEN HIS OPPONENT JUST GIVES UP WITH 3 ROUNDS LEFT. NOW IT IS OBVIOUS WHY BURNS DID NOT FIGHT BRONER, HE WOULD BE KILLED. BURNS RAN FROM BRONER WHEN THEY WERE JR. LIGHTWEIGHTS, HE DID SO AT LIGHTWEIGHT, AND THIS GUY NEARLY SLAUGHTER HIM LAST NIGHT, ALL THIS TALK ABOUT BREAKING GONZALEZ HEART MUST BE A BRITISH JOKE. BURNS HARDLY TOUCHED THE GUY THE WHOLE MATCH. BURNS WILL NEVER GET IN THE RING WITH VASQUEZ OR BRONER.

That was bizarre..Gonzalez winning every round up until 8th round….Then I’ll give Burns the two last rounds …Just because he was busier …Because he wasn’t hitting his target with much…..Then Gonzalez quits…?….Sure he went all in the 7th round and spent some energy on that….But Burns wasn’t that big of a threat….IMO….

People in here talking Burns greatness…Championsship rds etc….Are deluding themselves…..The guy was totally outclassed….

Gonzalez not going for the KO and being smarter could have Ko’ed Burns in the later rds… Because Burns was all over the place and didn’t know what to do…..

Burns got lucky…..Doubt ther’ll be a rematch.

Posted May 12, 2013 5:08 am

Just-Sayin

The strangest conclusion to a fight I;ve seen in many a year UNTIL the revelation about the wrist injury then it seemed to fit.

Gonzalez was pure class for the first 6 rounds – absolutely had EVERYTHING, offense, slipping punches, counters, slick movement, I mean he looked the champ, Burns the challenger.

BUT for the author to say Burns was VERY VERY lucky is pure BS. Yes, Gonzalez had an injury but there’s been many a fighter who’s carried on with bad injuries. You never give up – not when it’s your shot at a World Title. WTF was Gonalez thinking? Calzaghe fought one handed for 3/4 of a title defence once.

Real truth is this IMO: Gonzalez lost heart in Rd 7. He’s used to seeing his opps on the deck when he catches them flush with those shots Burns took in the 7th. Burns landed a peach of a right on Gonzalez too. I think the injury was a poor excuse – he lost his mojo.

Posted May 12, 2013 5:06 am

KOrnerman

also Ricksters footwork was crap compared to usual, I would have like to see how it played out had Gonzalez not quit.

Posted May 12, 2013 4:15 am

KOrnerman

Ricky got him a cracking uppercut in the seventh just after a major flurry from Gonzalez, I think the fight changed mentally for Gonzalez then when Rickster took his best shots and fired a sickener right back.

Posted May 12, 2013 4:13 am

KOrnerman

INJURY MINGERY- if any true champion had a broken wrist but winning the fight he would have kept fighting with one hand, Gonzalez is a woos and woosed out when he realised he couldnt ko Ricky and had gassed himself trying to all the while Rickster was getting stronger and may have halted Gonzalez had he not GAVE UP!

Posted May 12, 2013 3:52 am

Fight Aficionado

Injury stoppage is false. Gonzalez folded his tent once Burns started tapping that ass. Front runner got caught and quit. The end.

Posted May 12, 2013 3:37 am

Mick the Marmalizer

If Ricky Burns wants to go down in history as the #1 Boxer @ 135LB of his generation then he has to look for unification & start fighting abroad. The WBO belt is only an alphabet trinket, so for genuine respect it has to be the ring magazine belt or nothing! (All said & done he never won a Lonsdale belt, so he needs a bit of class on his mantle piece)!!

Posted May 12, 2013 2:58 am

Big Al

Just saw the fight on youtube. Looks more like fatigue set in on Gonzalez. Like he wasn’t in shape to go a full 12. His corner was working his legs, not his wrist. Ricky won out because of being in better shape, but I guess if you’re not in shape to go full 12 you can’t be champ.

Posted May 12, 2013 1:18 am

Broner probably would have beaten Burns, but Ponce DeLeon owns Broner. Hypotheticals don’t matter.

Gonzalez broke his wrist but stopped punching with BOTH hands, which coincidentally coincided with him punching himself out and his team desperately trying to rub some life into his legs and Burns weathering the best he had to offer and then coming back with a vengeance. lolol

Burns looked pretty rusty in there and definitely looked outclassed in there through the seventh. If Gonzalez had better conditioning and more heart Burns would have lost that fight. Burns looks very beatable by any of the top dogs at lightweight.

Limey Jay.. I know what you meant bud. As soon as burns made him fight it was as good as over. You cant hide for 12 rounds its just to long. It usually happens when you hurt a fighter, thatsv when they throw caution to the wind n catch up with you n give you no option but to fight. That was a classic example tonight

Posted May 11, 2013 8:33 pm

Limey jay

Left hook…..yeah my man it is , that’s exactly what it is.
Forgive me for being inarticulate…..what I meant was he ain’t your classic bullying style of fighter, like maybe a Marcos maidana, you know lots of heavy shots ….not to bothered wether they land clean or just batter the upper arms….for me Gonzalez was far more refined, he slipped burns shot beautifully at times and came back with great counters, I thought he looked very good , that’s all I meant by doing him a disservice as he had some good skills in there.
But yes he didn,t like it when it came back at him.
It would of been interesting had Ricky been able to put him under pressure earlier on while Gonzalez may have had more fight in him.
but i get the bully thing though 100%

Posted May 11, 2013 8:28 pm

Well we now have the Ibf bantamweight champion from here in the uk as well now. I’d say we punch well above our weight for such a tiny island. Think maybe its time these writers gave us the credit were due!!!

lefhook

Limiejay.. Is’nt that the definition of a bully?? getting hit back and not liking it??

Posted May 11, 2013 8:15 pm

Limey jay

That’s the fight game right there fellas.
On the fight posters it said it was a twelve round fight, Ricky is always prepared for the full twelve, sure he was being outboxed by a very good fighter in Gonzalez, had Gonzalez the strength and stamina to eat power shots for 7 rounds and grit his teeth and plough on then he would of took home the belt tonight, but he didn,t….
after battering Ricky’s body and head in the seventh he took a decent uppercut himself and the fight dynamics changed.
To call Gonzalez a bullying fighter is probably doing him a disservice as he was brilliantly slipping most of Ricky’s shots and countering back with his own heavy blows, but he didn,t like it when ricky ate his best shots , and then went and hit him back.
I don’t know if Gonzalez broke his hand ( it didn,t look that way)
It looked more like Ricky was ready for a war right then, and Gonzalez knew he wasn,t…he had shot his bolt.
That I guess is why Ricky is a champion, and Gonzalez isn,t, ….sometimes having big balls wins fights, sometimes putting in the extra work in the gym wins fights, but most of the time having the better skills wins fights…..that wasn,t the case tonight.
Was Ricky lucky tonight?
Not for me he wasn,t…..it’s mental toughness that got him the win tonight as he was struggling with Gonzalez,s style from the get go…..but he weathered the storm, and was prepared to stand and trade,Gonzalez obviously wasn,t……..that my friends is what champions are made of….you don’t get title belts from Toys ‘r’ us.

Mr. Bush: Stick to boxing topics and shove your filthy racial garbage back into your pea-sized brain. Gonzalez had every right to protect his damaged wrist — in boxing — boxers don’t always make decisions which the public likes — but that’s their perogative. He’s 100% Puerto Rican and you are 0% educated — that’s why you use those offensive words — lack of culture and intelligence.

Burns came to fight 12 rounds and take Chelo to the trenches if need be – Gonzales did not have the legs for the trenches and quit on his stool.

How is that luck?

Unless you mean the wrist? I personally dont think that would have mattered as he had punched himself out in the 7th and had no legs left.

After Gonzales hit Burns with eveything including the kitched sink and then ate a massive uppercut in return I think his legs went then.
Round 8 Burns was all over him and Gonzales was throwing nothing back – maybe his wrist was broken but I think his heart was too.

If/when Burns loses he will go out on his shield, tough and superfit. With 17 KOs I don’t think Gonzales will have been in the trenches much, and Burns took him there!

Gonzales will give anyone at lighweight problems though with his reach and defense, I was impressed.

Here’s a lesson for you kids—- This is a world title fight, you should be A) willing to go out on your shield, and B) prepared to go 12 rounds. You need both of those to beat a good champion. Gonzalez lacked both!

Ricky showed a lot of ring rust too, his timing was way off but again its a fine example of how strength and dogged determinedness can win world title fights.

Jnr.. There was nothing lucky about it m8. Its a 12 round fight not 5 or 6. Burns just broke a bullies heart. That’s what seperates the ordinary from a true champion

Suoer ko are you mentally retarded have you ever heard the old saying if you havnt got anything else nice to say then dont say anything at all the heart and mental toughness to come back from that no way he had a broken hand broken heart he was second best tonight but why not look for something positive to say rather than the negative your obviously from that island

Ricky wore him down but looked second best up until Gonzalez retired,Gonzalez put all his eggs in one basket in the 7th but couldnt stop Ricky, this tired him out beyond recuperation and I think Gonzalez knew he never had the gas to last the rest of the fight.Heart broken not wrist.

Rick was starting to take over from the end of the 7th. There was no broken wrist! That’s BS I’m 10 foot away from the ring, he was worn down. Simple as that

Ricky was the second best boxer tonight but the only fighter, understand quitting with a broken hand if you well behind on scorecard and getting outclassed but when its the other way round surely just grit your teeth and stay out of trouble as much as you can with one hand. Boxings a hurt business and looks like Gonzales lacks the stones required.
