rax – the shot that did that damage was the straight left.. clearly seen in the Video Replay any other followup glancing shot in that exchange that hit the area just made Angulo feel the pain more and resulted in him turning his back and quitting..

rax – I think what pissed people off was his corner immediately claiming he got thumbed and tried to imply that Lara had done something wrong and their Body language implied he did it intenionally.. something we all know was not the case.. If Angulo had simply said I think he broke something in my face no one would have made a big deal about him stopping and if he had given Lara his credit for fighting a tough fight he would’ve been seen in a better manner by the Boxing Public…

Razman – I think Angulo was in serious pain because when his corner went to put an Ice Bag on the side of his face he winced and pulled the bag away.. I have no doubt that he felt some serious pain and quit but that would be the normal action to take when you believe you are seriously hurt same as Cotto taking the Knee.. These guys know when its some seriously dangerous damage.. the ones who have not have paid the price big time..

Posted June 13, 2013 9:46 pm

raxman

when the thumb is attached to the glove its not a thumb in the eye, its just part of the glove which can happen. that wasn’t why he quit though. he quit because of the left that followed, he quit from the pain, and what i’m sure he thought was serious damage. trying to dress it up as I quit coz I couldn’t see and the pain in my eye was so bad is just BS. plenty of fighters get a bit of glove in the eye and fight thru it, the eye eventually clears. he just had enough of those shots lara was repeatedly landing right on the swelling

Posted June 13, 2013 7:37 pm

Public Enemy

Angulo tried but it was just too much.. no doubt he quit but it”s understandable.. no crime in that.. just like there was no crime in Cotto taking a knee vs a guy we all believe had cement in his wraps but many of the same guys making excuses for Angulo here were the same guys dogging Cotto for years for taking that knee and we all know who they are… I don’t demand or expect any fighter to die in the Ring for me.. no Boxing Fan should demand that from any of these fighters… I will say this.. another few fights like that for Angulo and he is going to end up with some serious Brain Damage.. he’s got to learn some defensive skills..

Posted June 13, 2013 7:01 pm

SREDMOND

Angulo is a guy who has trouble when another fighter shows that he’s as tough as him… Kirkland got off the deck and beat him down, now Lara got off the deck 2x and ended up stopping him… Angulos a tough night for anyone but he’s taken a lot of shots and his odometer is running down…!

Angulo is C + fighter at best with punching power. He didnt look good in the fight he had before Lara. Every person is different on the level of pain they can take. Angulo did quit, because he took massive punishment in the fight

Gonzo the Dragonborn

Actually, I read an absolutely heartbreaking account of a savage beaver attack on this women’s pet dogs on the Golden Retriever forum the other day which tragically resulted in the death of one of her beloved pets. I won’t post the whole thing because it is genuinely very upsetting but I’ll give you a little excerpt from it (I’ve changed the name of the poor dog that’s no longer with us as a gesture of respect though, and the one which survived too)

”The beavers were in a semi-circle around Rasputin, basically herding him towards the dam. He was on the far side of the creek and got sucked under the fallen trees. Osama had turned back towards the beavers but was still in the middle of the creek. They turned towards him and he turned back towards me but was fighting the current, By that time I had jumped into the water and was screaming at the beavers to try to distract them. I had a large stick in my hand to beat them off and was holding on to the trees, moving towards the middle, calling to Rasputin. I could see he was exhausted, they had herded him back to the dam, about 6 ft away from me. The beavers all submerged and 2 seconds later he went under. He didn’t come back up, but after a few minutes they did, swimming towards me. I was slapping the water with the stick and trying to move myself back along the trees to shore.

By that time 2 runners had heard me screaming and were screaming for me to get out of the water. One jumped in and dragged me out, while the other threw sticks at the beavers, who backed off. I thought both dogs had drowned, but one of the runners saw Osama coming up the trail towards us. I called for Rasputin for at least a half hour, trying to see if maybe he was trapped in an air pocket in the dam. There was no sign of him and I couldn’t hear him whine or bark. I finally gave up.

I went home to shower because my teeth were chattering and to leave Osama, then went back to try to find some sign of life. A friend happened to be there walking his dogs and went back to help me look. He crawled out onto the dam, trying to find him..After awhile we both agreed he was gone.

I filed a missing dog report at area dog shelters and have walked the creek everyday since but have not recovered his body. He was chipped, and had his license & ID tags on his collar, so I hope someone will find her and call me.

There is one thing that I would like everyone to do. Please, get the word out. Tell everyone you know about this and ask them to tell people so that this doesn’t happen to another dog. Not many people know how dangerous beavers are to dogs – even my vet didn’t. If they can drown a 110 lb Newfie, who was an exceptional swimmer with amazing stamina, they can drown any dog.

Beavers can hold their breath for 15 minutes, so the dog doesn’t really have a chance once it is pulled beneath the water. People need to know to leash their dogs if they see any signs of beaver activity in the area. It only takes a second for a dog to spot a beaver & give chase. Once the dog is in the water, the beavers have an unbeatable advantage.”

I will say this, Lara showed he has heart and determination…cause after each of those knockdowns he came back with renewed vigor, landing hard shots right to Angulo’s face, never let up and kept composed, gotta give him credit for that.

This guy needs to stop coming to the ring with a freaking dog chain around his neck like he’s a damn animal. Sure he put on a good show, but look at what it cost him, the guy got beat down like a dog. Maybe taking the dog chain off might help in him not being treated like one by his opponent in his next fight……

Ray – That all sounds great but Angulo did Quit, he turned his back on his opponent and stopped defending himself after Lara landed that left.. the Ref has to stop the fight the moment any fighter does that.. Like it or not that was a “NO MAS” moment.. Give Lara his credit, he never quit, got up from the Canvas and never stopped landing shots to Angulos face and body..

I agree with you on that, he should definetly rematch Angulo! I think he will beat Angulo if they fight again perhaps even in a better fashion. I just don’t think alarez is as good as people are making out to be, he still need to proof himself in my eyes!

Posted June 12, 2013 8:13 pm

Angulo looked TERRIBLE and was still winning the fight going into the 10th round. Lara was running and pot-shotting for his pro life. he was dominating nobody and before he attempted to gouge-out Angulo’s eyeball from his skull, it was questionable whether Lara would survive the final three rounds of Angulo’s plodding but unrelenting pressure. i was fully expecting him to go down one more time but the real question became “how in the F(!) is THIS version of Angulo nailing and Dropping(?!?) this presumably slick boxer?” Canelo would’ve DEMOLISHED Lara and still will IF Lara somehow manages to earn his way to Canelo’s level. rematching his controvesial “draws” would be a start. WTF is he afraid of, anyway?

Posted June 12, 2013 8:05 pm

Coach

Face first, you hit me so I can hit you fighter like Angulo are always going to land and make it a hard fight to their opponents. Alvarez is not like this and Lara have enough pop to keep him at bay… Alvarez have shown he doesn’t know how to corner a moving target and is because of this I think Lara can beat him… But they won’t let Alvarez fight Lara, he can make more money fighting someone else… Lara is too much risk and not much to gain.

Posted June 12, 2013 7:54 pm

Coach

Alvarez won a shot at mayweather b/c of his “great” performance against Trout??? You are delusional dude… The only reason Floyd gave this kid a chance is because of money. Lets be honest, Alvarez hasn’t done nothing in boxing to get a chance against Floyd let alone to be the “WBC” champ, I mean who did he beat to get that belt? Now, Mexican fans are going to pay to watch this fight and that is why Floyd is fighting him, he is going to cash in on that. The kid do not have the skills to beat Floyd, he looked bad against a moving target against trout and will look much worse against Floyd…. And Alvarez should fight Lara and I pick the Cuban to beat him

Posted June 12, 2013 7:46 pm

Public Enemy

The bottomline is that Lara literally broke Angulo down and took his heart. Angulo didn’t have a fracture and there was no thumbing.. just a perfect Hard shot by Lara that obliterated Angulos confidence and made Angulo quit aka No Mas.. Pretty Cowardly.. Lara Landed twice as Many shots to Angulos face as Angulo landed body shots… even the Flash Knockdowns didn’t prevent Lara from continuing to tag Angulos face at will… Honestly both these guys would take out Canelo who was winded against the ropes vs Feather fisted Trout in the 3rd round..

Fight Aficionado

Glad to hear the orbital bone wasn’t fractured. So the damage of this loss will be more psychological than physical. I didn’t see the thumb. That said, I suppose getting smashed in the eye with three consecutive punches can make you feel something odd even if it wasn’t so. Props to both Lara and Angulo. Both are warriors.

Posted June 12, 2013 6:35 pm

PEEJ

Angulo is no Ortiz. Ortiz quit when the going got tough. I think Angulo seriously hurt his eye and decided to call it a day. He won’t fight till the death but he will fight to the brink of death. Nothing wrong with what Angulo did

Posted June 12, 2013 6:26 pm

Supreme Court

Hey, herd of morons…
Angulo did not say the thumb caused the the concussion; he said:
“he sharp pain of his thumb in my eye caused me to turn my back out of reflex and I could not see out of my left eye.”

And Lara’s trainer is on record telling his fighter to “attack that eye!
And so went Lara for the eye!
Give Angulo credits, haters!
He lost with dignity

Posted June 12, 2013 5:58 pm

Gussie Finknottle

I wanted Angulo to win, I like his fighting style but it was punches that did the damage… not the thumb. I think Angulo could have stopped Lara if he hadn’t quit with the eye…but he did quit and who can blame him with an injury like that.

Posted June 12, 2013 5:31 pm

Gussie Finknottle

That was no easy way out…only a fool would think that

Posted June 12, 2013 5:26 pm

“taking the easy way out” is when Zab faked the low blow against Amir, he thought the ref would’ve ruled it a no contest, cause Zab was getting his ass handed to him….now that, was QUITTING!

Posted June 12, 2013 5:12 pm

Titopa

Joey – he didn’t take the “easy way out”, obviously the punch hurt him, which is why he winced and turned his back…we don’t know what he felt, maybe he thought his orbital bone broke, who knows, but whatever he felt was enough for him to quit….your vision is precious, when it’s compromised, it’s best to be safe than sorry!

Posted June 12, 2013 5:10 pm

third world

angulo was winning that fight and got thumbed.if you never fought before then don’t try to be an expert on boxing. angulo turned his back and the ref stopped it .thumbless gloves are thumb attached gloves and yes you can still thumb someones eye.angulo was getting nailed all through the fight with good shots yes,and he kept fighting.getting thumbed in the eye is like an electric cattle prod being stuck in your eye.thats why he turned and the ref had no choice i suppose, except to maybe ask if he was ok.it’s boxing, and anything can happen.

Posted June 12, 2013 5:08 pm

Ray

The difference between Ortiz and Angulo was because Ortiz quit EARLY after a little boo boo. Angulo kept on fighting until he felt something in his eye felt LIFE THREATENING in the late rounds.

Posted June 12, 2013 5:00 pm

Papo

So Lara’s thumb caused a contusion on Angulo’s eye…yeah, right! How about the many punches he took to that same eye throughout the fight…they didn’t have anything to do with that swelling? If you guys believe that, you must also believe in Santa Claus.

And to “te tumbo”, so you think another KD would’ve sealed it for Angulo? But guess what, just like “duwdu” mentioned, all the “coulda, shoulda, woulda” is just small talk. Obviously you dislike Lara and don’t want to give him any credit for making Angulo quit.

But here are some facts; Lara was down twice and both times he got up and continued hitting Angulo squarely on his face. He took everything Angulo had and still gave him hell. Yes, Angulo was barely ahead on points, but only because of the two knockdowns…the fight was much closer than what you’re trying to allude on your comment. Also, at the end of the fight Angulo’s face was a mess, and not just on his left eye, while Lara was barely unmarked. And finally, Lara won the fight clearly when Angulo decided to quit.

Give Lara some credit as he had a lot to do with Angulo’s disfigured face and for making him quit.

I’m happy for Angulo. He always brings it, and gives fans their money’s worth. A very tough and respected fighter. Hope he stays healthy, but he needs to retire. he’s going to take way too many punches, and he’s going to end up punch drunk, stuttering, and no one is going to care. I recently saw the Great Bobby Chacon. He was a warrior with so much toughness and courage. He came to fight in the manner that Angulo comes to fight. Watch him today, and he is a mess. Stuttering and stumbling everywhere. I met him a few times in the gym, and he was the nicest person you could meet. Today, it’s as sad as seeing the Greatest, Muhammad Ali. Angulo should retire now before it’s too late. In the end, no one is going to care.

Class act congratulating the winner. Lara nowhere near the best jmw in the world. Gotta be canelo, trout, cotto top three. You could throw lara in with martirosyan, ishe smith, molina, kirkland, bundrage and angulo agail and they are all good 50/50 fights.

I think Angulo didn’t look so great because of Lara. Angulo did what he could and capitalized on some of Lara’s mistakes when he go the chance, but Lara kept the fight at his pace for the most part. Which is why Angulo ended up getting busted up. To Angulo’s credit he used his size advantage to get in close and do damage when ever he could. He just doesn’t have the footwork and defense to complement his brawling style.

I haven’t been the biggest Angulo fan, but I truly admire his heart in the ring. I think he was on the verge of stopping Lara once he turned his back. These things happen, unfortunately. These guys aren’t superhuman. Angulo’s body work was vicious. He must work on his defense, however, as he is walking the same path as Margarito.

At the same time, I can’t take too much away from Lara. While I felt he was on the path to take an “L”, he did not show any signs of quitting mentally. Both are tough men, and maybe there will be a rematch in the near future.

that’s how bad Lara looked. Angulo WAS getting beaten up but was STILL winning the bout. one more KD would’ve sealed it and Lara was just looking for a soft spot to land one more time. it appeared imminent until the stoppage. Lara’s got a lot of simmering rematches on his plate (Molina, Vanes, Angulo). this guy just can’t seem to win convincingly and in at least two instances lost or was losing before fate nodded in his direction. IMO, Thurman or even Cotto would end Lara’s moment in the spotlight. Canelo is out of the question but only because it’s a mismatch going in. otherwise, i wouldn’t mind seeing it.
