No it won’t… Cleverly is a very serious athlete… He was just trained by Enzo a man who never boxed in his life… So he’s a little squared up and fights more than he boxes.. Boxing is the only sport where people who don’t know anything, and never competed in their sport, start teaching people skills and techniques that they pull out of their ass.

You guys don’t understand boxing. This fight will not happen. It will get cancelled at the last minute. No way will Cleverly face a serious opponent like this, the match has been announced just to keep Cleverly’s name in the headlines, as though he’s a serious fighter. He isn’t. Trust me. Mark my words. This fight will definitely get CANCELLED.

Posted June 25, 2013 7:24 am

This fight will not happen. Promoter Warren is only announcing it to keep Cleverly in the headlines. I guarantee paper champion Cleverly will not be stepping into the ring with this guy.

I was saying bernard was gonna dodge kovalev. There was already talk of bernard ditching his strap and fighting someone else. People at light heavy SERIOUSLY don’t want to fight kovalev. The dude is scary and we all know it and in fact cleverly himself came out and said there issome fear in him and it motivates him. Kovalev is the real deal man. His comp thus far is irrelevant. His stoppage rate is what’s relevant and how fast he’s skull crushing. Those that know boxing like bernard. Can see and hear kovalevs power. Kovalev is gonna skull crush cleverly and I think bernard was gonna dodge him and the dodging played a factor in this fight

cleverly may taste defeat. The russian is the hardest puncher he will have faced.

Posted June 23, 2013 12:18 pm

TARK

Right… He hasn’t fought anyone good. But he’s still a real good boxer and puncher who takes people with impressive records out of there. Cleverly is a huge step up for him — so is Kovalev for Cleverly.

At some point you make the jump up, and that’s what they’re doing.

Posted June 23, 2013 2:04 am

Hands Of Stone

He would’ve possibly beaten Kessler, but they are different weight classes anyway….

I just think there are unanswered questions surrounding Kovalev. He jas a great KO ratio against poor to mediocre fighters. Campillo hardly has an iron jaw. I think Cleverly is being pretty smart. He’ll get a lot of credit for (if he does) beating a supposedly high risk opponent before he gets any better.

If Cleverly gets through the first 4rds he can box to a dec.Kovalev has power but may be spooked if Clev. dosent crumble early, and if Kovalev has little or no plan B then the odds will be in Clev. favor.

“Are both Kovalev and Hopkins ducking each other??” – Yo, I was as perplexed as you. Cleverly-Kovalev makes no sense, other than the match is getting fast tracked to August whereas nobody knows when he’d get his mandatory shot at Bhop. Could be money. Kovalev would get TV paydays from both Sky TV and HBO plus he’d be paid in British pounds worth 1.5x the US dollar. I’d like to hear all three guys comment on it though because it’s an odd scenario.

Posted June 22, 2013 4:39 pm

Supreme Clown I didn’t not disparage Bhop and you know it. Fact is he’s topical to this thread because the IBF named Kovalev as his mandatory challenger just days before Cleverly announced he’d fight him instead. You are an attention whore nobody pays attention to unless you start race baiting people. Have fun trolling ESB after tonight’s Showtime card, alone as always on a Saturday night.

Enzo Calzaghe boxers have some of the same problems as Cus D’Amato boxers had. Neither trainer ever boxed themselves, and both were extremely authoritarian and got the best effort out of athletes. They were great motivators. Patterson, Torres, Mathis, and Tyson all squared up too much… applied tons of pressure… threw tons of power punches and combinations… and basically wore you down round by round… It’s a great style if you’re better conditioned, stronger, faster, a better puncher, and more athletic than all your opponents. As soon as you meet somebody with great fundamentals, such as a great stance, great jab, a terrific straight right, a polished defense, and can match you in athletic ability and desire, the game is over.

Cleverly has more professional fights against better boxers… Kovalev has better boxing technique and more punching power. Kovalev would definitely beat the Kessler who fought Calzaghe. It’s not a matter of experience. Roberto Duran didn’t have any “world class” when he beat the tar out of Ken Buchanan—but he did know what he was doing. Buchanan was a good but flawed boxer. He was easy to hit if you had superior offensive skills. Duran had great trainers. He wasn’t simply a great talent.

Posted June 22, 2013 3:40 pm

Erlangdon

With the exception of punching power, the skill level favors Cleverly hands down. He’ll handle the Russian’s frantic offense in the early rounds and will turn the heat up in the mid-late part of the fight and soon be in full control, winning a close, but clear cut, unanimous decision over this hard punching, but otherwise limited fighter.

Posted June 22, 2013 2:52 pm

Kovalev is being a little overhyped by some people, Campillo aside, his opponents have ranged from poor through to average. To say he is better than Kessler when he fought Calzaghe is abject nonsense of course! A better comparison thus far would be Jeff Lacy, who also looked like ”a beast” until he met Calzaghe. Cleverley is not in Calzaghe’s class of course, but he is far better than any previous Kovalev victim, and has a far harder chin.

Posted June 22, 2013 2:09 pm

Edgar Allen

If Cleverly’s chin is as solid as many have stated, he may well be able to last past the 3rd round and that may be where this fight changes in dramatic fashion. The psychological effect on Kovalev could be devastating to a guy that has blitzed 18 straight opponents in 3 rounds or less. Should this scenario develop and the fight goes past that critical 3rd stanza, all bets are off. I think we’re possibly going to see Calzaghe/Lacy all over again.

Posted June 22, 2013 1:50 pm

Kovalev IS the mandatory challenger to Hopkins.

Kovalev called out Hopkins.

Hopkins said yes to the fight.

And now, Kovalev is fighting Cleverly!!!

Huh?!

Are both Kovalev and Hopkins ducking each other??

Can someone explain?

Posted June 22, 2013 1:33 pm

Kovalev has been fighting cans, it’s good he has stepped up to fight Cleverly, Cleverly wins by wide decision.

Posted June 22, 2013 1:22 pm

Boesman

Watch team Cleverly find an exit route. This Kovalev looks like a live apponent and we know Team Clev prefer 3rd tier opposition. The very limited Bellew had Clevs number until he gassed and stopped throwing the double jab. Watch Cleverly fight a 12-5-2(7) type apponent instead.

Full respect to Cleverly for taking on Kovalev too. He needed bigger challenges to be taken seriously as a champ and this is a challenge.

Cleverly can win, but he’s got to box, well clever-ly.:)
If he gets caught up in a macho punch-up early on, that will suit Kovalev and he’ll smash Nathan. Cleverly has to box for the first half of the fight if he can, pick and choose his chances to engage Sergey. This is a big test for Kovalev too, a big step up from Cornelius White.

Its good to see cleverly getting a good match up and kolorov getting a deserved title shot in which will be an exciting fight no doubt. However I think cleverley will rise to occoastion and will see him at his best with a ud or see kolorov running out of steam in round 11

Clevs next move after this should be to drop frank warren, win or lose where does he go from here,if he wins he has nothing more to offer than he does now and hes beat a very dangerous guy, lose and he has nothing to offer at all, don’t think it will be a massive payday will it ?warren has just put Clev on top of the who needs him list.50/50 fight for me.

Posted June 22, 2013 6:44 am

Hands Of Stone

I honestly don’t get the Kovalev rating. Granted, he’s looked good so far, but who has been his biggest test? I think his record is quite underwhelming. He could be the next best thing or next in a long line of big punchers that get exposed at the higher level. To say he’s better than Kessler was is a bit ridiculous. Kessler was a seasoned world champion when he fought Calzaghe. Kovalev is a 21 fight relative novice. Good KO ratio yes? Best opponent he KO’d. I don’t particularly rate Cleverly, and he does seem to love taking punches, so that could be his demise, but I think he might have this…

VERACITY No I don’t.. That was a troll.. I’ve got Kovalev and I always do an analysis.

Cleverly has some of the same problems Calzaghe had.. He has a forward head. He sticks his head into your punches and gets nailed with uppercuts. He pulls his head down like a turtle and he trades with you. He does roll and get under punches well. He’s smart, fast, and throws a ton of punches, but sooner or later Kovalev will catch him with a hook straight right, or uppercut. So I make Kovalev a 2 to 1 favorite.

If there’s a KO it will probably be Kovalev, who hits like a mule.. It’s going to be in Wales so a decision could be problematic.. However Kovalev is definitely much better than Kessler who was Calzaghe’s biggest opponent in Wales.. I wouldn’t say Cleverly is better than Calzaghe, although he’s bigger and taller.. He’s in tougher than Calzaghe ever was.

All reports coming out of Cleverly’s spa with Kessler is that he dominated Kessler. Can’t be bad then surely to dominate an elite champion like that.

He has to make sure he doesn’t get caught clean that often but his chin should stand up on the occassion’s it does.

Posted June 22, 2013 2:38 am

stevie -J

Whlst Clev doesn’t have huge power – he goes to the body as beautifully as anyone I’ve seen these days. You watch his fights and he’s always really hurts his opponents with body shots whilst when he goes up top not much.

He’ll drain the energy and fight out of Kovlev with some serious body work.

Huge props for Cleverly for taking and asking for this when everyone else is running the other way.

You’re massively underrating Nathan believe me. Journalist Steve Illis was ringside watching him spar heavyweights Tyson Furry and Derek Chisora and he said they were bith really going for it with Nathan.

He couldn’t believe Cleverly’s chin.

Clev will be smart, box smart, he’s going to put educated pressure on kovalev and push him backwards and outwork him.

Kovalev has pop in both hands but is upright, wide open, stiff and not that fast.

Clev UD.

Oh and no changing your mind after the fight, saying he’s a ‘hype job’ if Clev beats him. You’ve called it – he’s the best prospect in boxing is all i keep reading and a beast etc, that’ll stop Cleverly in 6.

So, if Cleverly wins, give him his due props.

CATH, if Cleverly wins it would buoy his status among real fight fans. But there’s lots of bigger names he could target who would give him more money, overall media coverage and public awareness. Maybe he sees some weakness in Kovalev that I don’t, or he just doesn’t worry about high risk/low reward fights like most current day title holders.

Posted June 21, 2013 8:25 pm

Hype Train

Cleverly fake run as champion is soon at an end. He will be KTFO in quick time and no one will need to put up with his amateurish skills and average quality opponents again. Oh yeah, it has been noticed that Hopkins has been very quiet and was last seen slinking on his belly in the other direction, rather than face Kovalev.

Clev and Fwank have really stepped in it now, not a smart move to go from fighting cans to a huge knock out puncher who applies intelligent pressure. We’re gonna find out what kind of whiskers Clev is sporting. Good fight, surprised it’s been made.

WBO trinket holder Nathan Cleverley has all the tools to be #1 in the World @ 175Lb. However he needs to start looking for unification. WBA titlist Beibut Shumenov(Kazakhstan) has offered him a fight on neutral ground(USA) with a 50% split, which has been rejected by Mr Frank Warren more then once. So what’s what?
If any division needs sorting out then it’s light heavyweight. Hopefully Adonis Stevenson & Tony Bellew can be made soon for the WBC belt & unification can follow soon after. It’s all getting a bit laborious!!………

Sounds like Clev is up against it…Hope he pulls it off, but he must surely be the underdog. I would favour the winner of this fight over any other fighter at 175.

Credit to Cleverly for taking this fight. Kovalev is a dangerous, unbeaten puncher, who has no belt and little star name compared to the likes of Pascal, Hops etc. Murat, Bellew and now Kovalev – all world class, top 10 opponents. Clev is still only a young gun too..

Posted June 21, 2013 6:32 pm

Squared-Circle (a.k.a. LionKing)

Prediction: The Krusher by brutal stoppage inside of 4 rounds. He will go to fight Ole Pokins, Adonis — if they’ll accept his challenges — and beat both of them as well. SK is the future Undisputed Light HW Champion of the World.

Kovalev is a whole lot more than just a slugger with scary power. He is an extremely well-rounded and talented technical boxer with this silky-smooth style that looks absolutely effortless. He’s very light on his fight, has great movement and throws combinations from all sorts of different angles with both hands.

He also doesn’t wind-up or telegraph his shots. And when he hurts guys with power shots it looks like he’s not even throwing them hard — which means he has extremely, naturally heavy-hands combined with great technique. Some guys keep saying “watch out for the right hand,” but SK has REAL KO power in BOTH hands. I’ve seen him destroy guys with his left hook. Perhaps most importantly, he’s one of the best finishers I’ve ever seen. When he has a guy hurt and smells blood, he shifts into overdrive and comes at them 110% with murderous intentions.

Although Cleverly is a very talented boxer, he does NOT have the power to contain the steady, controlled-aggression of SK and stop him from swarming and smashing him. Real Talk.
