I’m serious Kid Blast….. Once you turn pro.. unless you had a career like Rigondeaux, and won your last 200 amateur fights complete with 2 Olympic Gold Medals.. You start out all over again as a novice when you turn pro.

No headgear… smaller gloves… totally different scoring criteria… a fight can go 4 X as long… strength, power, toughness, and endurance count for much more… You can land 5 punches to your opponents 15 if you hurt, stagger, or floor him, you still win the round… There is more head work, grappling, grabbing, pushing, and forearming that many referees ignore… There is a massive inconsistency in the way referees approach infractions… There is a massive inconsistency in the way matches are refereed and scored—I mean even more so than in the amateurs.

So it’s a huge learning experience whether you’ve had 20 amateur fights or 200… And if you’re 17-0 and fighting guys with 20, 30, or 40 fights, and have been world champion or in title fights, you’re probably ready for this level of competition. Tim Witherspoon had 7 amateur fights and 15 pro fights when he fought what he says was the best fight of his life vs Holmes.

“Jennings’ short amateur career isn’t a detriment” Huh, the hell you say. That’s why the Eastern Euros are taking over–because of their amateur experience.

FA, right, it won’t happen

PULEV LACKS ONE-PUNCH POWER BIG TIME. HE BEATS DOWN HIS FOES AND MAKES THEM QUIT, BUT HE DOSEN’T SCORE CLEAN KO’S.

however, HE IS BERY STRONG AND PRIBABLY WOULD MUSCLE BY-BY IN CLOSE AND SAP HIS STRENGTH BY THE LATE ROUNDS.

IF JEENING COULD COME UP WITH A GOOD GAME PLAN, HE STANDS A CHANCE BUT HE IS VERY YOUND EXPERIENCE-WISE.

LOL Kid Blast. Mago gets hit but he also has a solid jaw. What is Wilder’s jaw like? Mago would touch it. Guaranteed fireworks, interesting storylines, a fight that would rivet audiences and garner interest in heavyweight boxing among disillusioned Americans. So of course it won’t happen. Too much risk.

Posted June 27, 2013 5:38 pm

TARK

Jenning vs Pulev is a tough one… Jennings has been very active while Pulev has been on the shelf for a while.. Adamek and Fury pulled out of fights with Pulev and he’s had a hard time digging up an opponent…

I’m mildly surprised… It’s not a fight I would choose for Jennings immediately.. I would want Dimitrenko and Ustinov first—but the way Jennings took care of his last foe so quickly and easily—a very tough opponent—he definitely needs to move up.. Pulev is a calculated risk…the type the most serious and progressive heavyweights take. It’s going to be a blockbuster 12-round fight so don’t miss it if it comes off… It will be a treat.

They’re both 17-0 and will take on anybody. You don’t see heavyweight fights like this often. Jennings’ short amateur career isn’t a detriment, because the pro game is so different anymore. Jennings is definitely the most serious and focused American heavyweight I’ve ever seen.

I don’t have a clear line on the fight yet. Wait until they’re at least a month into serious training. I need to see how their preparations are going. It’s hard to find sparring partners to simulate these guys … so it will be interesting to see who they come up with.

I won’t bother watching Wilder blow Liakhovich over.

Yeah maybe Kid Blast but you might see a different, more intimidated Wilder too.

Posted June 27, 2013 3:43 pm

Fight Aficionado, the defense challenge Mago would be brutalized in one round by Wilder. You have been seeing too many swallowers.

Hey Deontay….I’m a 51 year year old ex heavyweight on the comeback trail. I had a 18-3 record with 13 kos…wanna fight. Oh, I now weigh 304 and haven’t fought in 13 years. I sound tailor made for you eh?

“Don’t get up to get a beer fight would be wilder vs. magomed. They never seem to have fights like that.” – Carlos that would be a great fan friendly fight. Unfortunately it’ll never happen. I’ve no doubt Mago would take it but Wilder wouldn’t. No way.

on another note.. Liakhovich was a solid fighter in his prime but he’s been treading the Shtoville lane for a while now

TeeJay.. dumbo.. there is no such name .. Siarhey in any of the former Soviet Republics… it would be akin to naming George Jorge or Anthony Antone .. not that it matter a whole lot

What makes this opponent such a “first real test” for anyone considering that he was never that good to begin with and that he has rarely fought over the last several years? ??

Posted June 27, 2013 6:30 am

TARK

No he’s not… The White Wolf is nowhere… Did you see the Jennings fight??? Liakhovich hasn’t fought since then and Jennings has had several tougher fights since then… Jennings had 12 pro fights when he fought Sergei, and he has a tough day job, but he made Sergei look like crap.

If SL was still serious about his career he wouldn’t take 18 months off and fight another guy who’s going to kill him.

Posted June 27, 2013 5:47 am

Gnome

I think everyone is being a bit too down on the White Wolf. I was in Erfurth when he fought Helenius, and he gave the Finn all he could handle and more for six rounds. He’s a big step up from Harrison, Beck, etc.

Posted June 27, 2013 5:34 am

and then what? Another old past prime champ like Briggs, Rahman, Golota or Holyfield? Oh, sorry. Briggs and Holyfield are impossible to be koed, so they can’t be considered.

They’ll need a stretcher & ambulance on hand for Liakovich after Wilder CRUSHES him! I think the winner should face Bryant Jennings.

Chisora should come here to fight Wilder, unless he too cannot get a Visa.

Posted June 27, 2013 1:32 am

Sergei is so over. Wilder is fighting a guy who already had his day in the sun. Wilder needs to pick some live meat…….like Fury or Price or Seth, or Arreola, or somebody with a pulse.

Posted June 27, 2013 1:31 am

Derek

I don’t know that this is an upgrade opponent at all. At his peak, Lyakhovich is easily the best Wilder has faced, but he hasn’t beaten anyone in 7 years. This is another Owen Beck type opponent, except one who had a decent peak in the sport. It’s a good move if you want to say you beat a “name” when the name is so far past prime it’s not a threat.

Posted June 27, 2013 1:24 am

Bernie

Wilder was framed by the syndicate in his assault charge before the fight with Chisora! Now he agrees to fight Liakhovich! Now hes somebody’s boy! He should get a new trainer too! Somebody like Jack Lowe!

Posted June 27, 2013 1:12 am

rod

Siarhei is a real opponent. On about the same level as Chisora. Wilder is stepping it up. He should take on the winner or Browne vs Towers after this fight.

I thought it was a genius move for Helenius a few years back when he fought Brewster, Peter and Liakhovich – three fading names, not long gone enough to be completely irrelevant.

It created a big buzz on Helenius, who Chisora later demonstrated to be utterly ordinary.

But now we are even further down the track, Liakhovich has another loss, Jennings just beat him, and didn`t take 29 fights to get there.

The guy just isn`t relevant in any way any more.

For me he wasn`t even one of the best of the Russians/Eastern Europeans in his prime – you had guys like Chagaev, Ibrigamov, Valuev occupying that space.

I give him credit for beating Brewster, but the eye injury played a part in that, and he didn`t produce anything comparable on a consistent basis. The dude got knocked out by Maurice Harris. The Maurice Harris who couldn`t last one round with Akinwande.

Wilder will stop him early and it will mean nothing

Have to agree w/AG & others below.
Years ago a tough, top HW – now Liak is shot at this stage.

Windmill continues to fight no hopers. What do his handlers know?

Posted June 26, 2013 9:35 pm

Fight Aficionado

Liakoovich is certainly an upgrade from Wilder’s comp to date. But I get the feeling he’s now an opponent, no longer a contender. He did give Jenkins some good hard rounds though so this will be a good indication of where Wilder’s at.

Posted June 26, 2013 6:30 pm

AssyrianGod

Like Audley Harrison, Liakhovich is totally shot. After 28 fights Wilder is STILL not fighting a live opponent.

Posted June 26, 2013 6:20 pm

I think people need to give Wilder some slack…

He called out Price, Thompson, and Fury..

You cant make people fight you.

TARK

Liakhovich lost every round to Nicolai Valuev. When you take into consideration how quick Valuev is NOT … that is not a happy event…

Robert Helenius beat Liakhovich unmercifully. It was insane to allow Sergie to come out for the 8th, where he was immediately smashed by a crushing combination.

Bryant Jennings treated Liakhovich like a cheap sparring partner, outboxing him as he pleased and eventually forcing Eddie Mustafa to stop the fight. It’s not as if Bryant was pushing for a stoppage. He was getting good work against a former world champion at a time he had 12 fights experience … so glory in the experience and showcase your skills.

This is probably very good money for Liakhovich. He also knows he’s being used like former World Heavyweight Champions have been used for several generations before him. Sergie should take the first hard punch, hit the canvas, and stay there…

Then Sergie should hire a new matchmaker to secure fights more appropriate for a deteriorated former World Champion, such as: Brian Minto… Chuancy Weliver… Shane Anddreesen… Peter Graham… Jason Barnett etc. After you win about 10 of those you try for another money fight.. Any victory is sweeter than defeat. You feel a lot better because you’re not sitting around for 2 years letting your skills deteriorate. The dumbest thing in the world is waiting for your phone to ring for 15 months. It’s always someone who thinks his kid can kick your ass—and he’s probably right. Your man has to be doing the calling. A lot of boxers do it themselves these days. There are 24 hours in a day and a lot of boxers looking for work.

Hey Collins! Wots with the Yank date format?

Posted June 26, 2013 3:42 pm

c.morgan

Ok I stand corrected, I guess he did start spelling his first name differently. Sergei is coming off of back to back stoppage losses here. They were late round stoppages so I guess if there is an early stoppage Deontay fans can say “he stopped him faster”

Posted June 26, 2013 3:00 pm

c.morgan

Who is siarhei? Check your spelling before submitting an article bro.

Well this shows us that Deontay and his handlers really have no intention of ever fighting a threat, sergei is beyond shopworn and extremely innactive.
