Maybe Canelo or SHOULD watch the OLD FOOTAGE of Roberto Duran VS Sugar Ray Leonard fight that was in Montreal… A slick FAST handed UNDEAFTED Leonard Got his ASS handed to him by a HARD PUNCHING, MUGGING, Swing from the fences ROBERTO DURAN.. What a CLASSIC fight my favorite of ALL time!!!!!!! Sugar in Commercials, The TALK of the TOWN unstoppable UNBEATABLE etc etc etc… Well the BULLY from the neighborhood BEAT him up. Maybe Canelo should watch that tape. I am sure he has the RESOURCES to GET it

HIDALGO

Have you ever been knifed to the point where you were told that less than an inch more and your main artery would have been severed?

I have a scar under my chin, two in my legs, where I suffered potentially life threatening wounds and one in my side.

I was hospitalised, in a lot of pain – you should have seen the amount of blood I lost.

The real damage was done to my psyche at the time as these dudes were arrested, it went to court and I got visits from their pals who knew where I hung out (Remember, these dudes were hardcore crims, wanted for other crimes)
I was told if I didn’t turn up for the trial I would be arrested myself….

Can you imagine what this does to a young 17 year old???? I spent a year watching my back, not knowing when/ if someone was going to do me or my family because I was in wrong place at wrong time and stood up for myself????

Even after the case, I was watching my back and I will admit, I lost all confidence for a very long time…. I even felt guilty that I wasn’t killed that night and if I went to certain areas I had to watch my back for revenge attacks.

Let’s just say boxing was not high on my agenda at that time….

I remember saying to them as they ran off, Why you doing this to me – I’m a face? They ran of laughing. “We know!”

I had been on TV recently (as I had other talents and avenues I was chasing at the time)….

HIDALGO…. One day you may know the full story, but let’s just say I lost all my confidence with every thing, my parents used all their pressure to tell me to get back into my studies which I did and it took several years for me to step back into a boxing ring—- by which time life had moved on….

The reason why I train people now and do the do myself is because I still love boxing— I still have a lot to give and this is my final go-round…

You try taking time out of a sport for the best part of a decade and try and get back to the top — it aint gonna happen…

But, I have always studied boxing from the age of five or six and I have decent contacts with people within the fight game right now and we chat boxing, the history of boxing, fighters, tactics, etc…etc….

It took me a long time, but those 5 guys who stabbed me have made me mentally stronger and I will never back down or let anyone try and bully me again!

HIDALGO I JUST ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION, but the website said I was writing my comments too quickly….

Will try again to answer you….

I have followed boxing for 30 years….. Is that a big enough clue for you???

I am the wrong side of the scale in my mid 30′s, although they had a dude at the Mayweather Gym, who I believe had touched 40 and made his pro-debut and won….

I can’t remember his name, but my mate CORNELIUS BOZA-EDWARDS and I were chatting about him…. Fit as a fiddle and we were proud as punch for him…. We are talking circa 2 years ago….

My goal now is to train fighters to box, some do MMA but want to learn the stand up side more…. For myself, to be as good as I can be….

Posted July 14, 2013 3:39 am

TJ, if you are able to train yourself and others at such a high level, how is it that your boxing career was “killed” at such an early level? What permanent physical damage did they do to you that let’s you spar, and train like a pro–both yourself and others–yet does not permit you to actually box any longer?

TARK

YOU WROTE:

TJ…. It doesn’t matter how much you spar with non-professional boxers..and non-competitive amateur boxers.. Until you’ve had a slew of amateur fights, and about 20 pro fights, and you work with top grade profession sparring partners, it’s hard to refer to yourself as a “defensive specialist” in the context of being a boxing master.

I agree with you on the fact about 20 pro fights, BUT I also would like to add that boxers these days rushing to world level after 12/13 pro bouts have NOT learned to game…. YES, there are exceptions, but I generally don’t believe the hype until a boxer has had at least 20 pro bouts and has faced two or three fringe contenders, gate-keepers, respected clubfighters or journeymen of repute.

But unfortunately these days all you need is a tiff on Facebook and you get a mega dollar payday…

Last week and the week before I did a 60 hour week and still got my *** down to the gym to both teach and complete my own training regime….

This game is all about SACRIFICE…. Being CEREBRALLY stronger than the other guy, doing those things you absolutely hate, drill after drill, time after time, until they become second nature and then doing it again.

Squat after squat, burpee after burpee, sit-up after sit-up…. Working the bags til your knuckles are sore and fighting through the pain, working through utter exhaustion and then going an extra round and then another one…… Doing defence until you literally hate it and then some more…..

TARK… Those people that know me will tell you what I give to the sport and I have a queue of people begging me to train them….As soon as they see me in the gym either working out on my own or training they beg for me to help them….

“I want to be able to do footwork like you…” “How do you keep such stamina” blah, blah, blah

TARK… It’s all in my make-up… IO refuse to lose, refuse to back down and most importantly I refuse to give in!!!!!

Is CANELO of the same mindset????

I guess we’ll find out September 14th!!!!!

TJ

TARK…

What I wrote was an example of what I do at least once/twice a week… I train fighters, but also let them come at me with all guns blazing (whilst, I am only allowed to target their torsos and arms – no head shots – to give them the confidence to slam away at me….)

If you read what I wrote, I said that FLOYD is a light years ahead of me in experience, but we are doing the same thing – operating under enemy fire…

One of the guys is 22/3 years old and is about 13 stones of muscle – 185 lbs, 6 feet and has bags of energy and has a good dig on him…. another is about 5’10 and 150 lbs and is more tricky as he is much more unpredictable in his arsenal… He’s a two-handed banger, regularly firing his back hand twice or leading off with it, which makes me have to think hard about what I’m doing…

I have had several amateur boxing bouts from the age of 12 -17, in my younger- wilder days I also had several street fights (unfortunately I hung out with a few so and sos), often engaging more than one thug at a time, culminating in getting stabbed by a group of 5 knuckle heads who tried to grab my chain and when I fought back, two of them stabbed me with butterfly knives… I was only 17 at the time and that basically killed my boxing career….

Anyway, the point is I am very comfortable under fire, whether it be in a real fight, sparring partner or boxing ring… It makes no difference….
If a guy wants to come at you to take off your head it doesn’t matter – If you allow him to, he will smash you to bits….

You have to use your smarts, your naturals and skills acquired.

TARK – everyone knows that all it takes is one punch – sometimes even an innocuous one to end any fight or boxing contest early—

BUT, what I’m saying is that and I have seen the Mayweathers up front in their gym training hour after hour on this scenario, so it becomes ingrained in their make-up to fight this way….

Floyd is far more comfortable when the Hattons, Guerreros and the other offensive fighters come at him, rather than him making the fight…

Yes, make them miss and then make them pay!!!!

I bet you a pound to a penny FLOYD is hoping Canelo tries to hunt him down rather than stand off and attack from range!

That is my point… I rate CANELO and his combinations, BUT have YOU though that FLOYD will land one of his extraordinary punches that SAUL DOESN’T see that will stop him in his tracks?????

I TRULY believe if CANELO is as good as everyone reckons, then it will bring out the 30-40% I still believe we haven’t seen in FLOYD and he wil do something truly spectacular on September 14th.

Anyway I’m off to try and avoid getting sparked in another sparring session….

You said…, “NO MATTER HOW WELL CONDITIONED YOU ARE It don’t mean a thing unless you can hit your opponent, consistently and often.”

You also said…, “Believe me it takes more out of someone who is missing the target repeatedly than the other guy who is comfortable under fire and can pick and place his shots at will.”

You don’t need to hit your opponente consistently and often.. You can hit him with one good one punch — like Marquez hit Pacquiao… Just being extremely dangerous slows your opponent down… You can land fewer punches if yours do more damage — you should get credit for it in a pro fight. A guy hits you with 15 feather punches that you can’t even feel. You clout him with a punch that staggers him, takes his legs away, and drops him to the canvas — you win the round 10-8.

Nobody is very comfortable under fire at the Mayweather-Canelo level of the game… Neither one will be able to pick and place their shots at will…

TyrantT316

This is an LOL article if there ever was one. No sparring partner is going to match what the actual opponent is going to be. That’s the point. To find partners who can come closest to your opponent.

Based on this articles logic, Canelo has no chance to beat Mayweather unless he spars with Mayweather himself leading up to his fight with Mayweather himself.

And this is coming from a Mayweather fan.

Believe me it takes more out of someone who is missing the target repeatedly than the other guy who is comfortable under fire and can pick and place his shots at will…

How, do I know? Because i’ve been doing this sparring 8 rounds with guys 10+ years my juniour, who have bags of energy, but not the cerebral boxing knowledge to stay in the pocket or use good footwork, to make them miss and then make them pay.

I tell them to come at me guns blazing and they do, but I have always been a defensive specialist first (but have always had a super charged engine) and pick them off at will.

These breres puff after a while and I ‘m still going as I truly believe this is a mind game far more than a physical one and IMHO Floyd Maywewther is a million times better than I am and will be totally comfortable in the ring with CANELO and see all the gaps early which he will capitalise on later.

IF canelo elects to box it will be a slower process of elimination as Floyd will lead many of those exchanges with feints to draw his leads and sail on behind the jab and the right hand!

Speaking of Martirosyan, he is the number one contender for Canelo’s WBC title. He also fought to a draw against Lara who is the number one contender for Mayweather’s WBA championship belt. Yeah boxing is just a racket and political lobby

Tyrone Jones
Speaking of racketeering, the WBC just dropped Martirosyan below the likes of Willie Nelson, Delvon Rodriguez, Della Rosa, etc.. I dont see lara even listed. I guess because Golden Boy wants to protect Canelo

Tyrone Jones
True there have been several great fights lately but the sanctioning bodies need to enforce their rules such as making champions fight the number one contender. On the other hand Floyd’s WBA Jr. middleweight belt is of a definite racketeering regime

YOUR LAST THREE POSTS HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD and is what i’ve gone on about for several years….

Boxing is at the mercy of a certain 3 -4 main promoters/ organisations, 2 of which are based in the USA, one in europe and the other in the UK….

It’s downright scandolous!

Right… Just shadow box in your living room… Going to the gym, working out, and doing 10 rounds of sparring with 3 spar mates who box like Floyd will develop bad habits … and won’t do you any good.

Right…, Don’t spar because the more you spar the worse you’ll get … since you’re not sparring anyone good and will develop bad habits … LMFAO

Mayweather is just a protected fighter. He already lost against castillo and odh but the judges simply took care of business. May has developed great defensive skills but he is not good enough to take the risk to be an offensive fighter. What if Alvarez decides not run behind Floyd? The fight would break the ppv records and the boring records. If Floyd does not exists, who could be the p4p king? obviously he must to be american, no european, no asian nor latin.

Aswin MK, I appreciate your advice even th
ugh I don’t agree with them. Only a complete idiot would run 8-10 miles a day. Juan Marquel Marquez is a great defensive fighter but the similarities with Floyd end there. He’ll won’t be anybody’s sparring partner.
Rigondeax would be a great sparring partner. His footwork is better than Floyd’s. Canelo would get frustrated and learn heaps from Rigo.

Posted July 11, 2013 4:28 am

Aswin MK

Canelo should also study Floyd Mayweather’s fights thoroughly and try to get an idea of the minute weakness that Floyd has.

Second, Canelo should have two strategies for his fight as Floyd is known well for adjusting his fight plan to negate the advantages of his opponents.

Canelo should also learn to be patient and not go for the kill,be prepared to lose a few rounds, work on Floyd’s body by cutting off the ring and ensure that he hits Floyd with his complete power.

LAst, but not least, make every PUNCH COUNT, even if Canelo is going to land only 20 punches per round, ensure that they are power shots that make damage. If Canelo can swallow his ego, improve on his stamina, and be more accurate and effective with his punches, he has a good chance in the championship rounds…

Remember boxers like Flyod like boxers who come to them, if possible, Canelo should try to press the action in the first few rounds and try to steal them. In the fourth and fifth, Canelo shhould just try to box Mayweather landing some strong body shots. Never get frustrated as Mayweather is gonnna make you 90% of the time. But ensure that you make the remaining 10% count.

Posted July 11, 2013 2:45 am

Aswin MK

I am really surprised at many of the comments here. Mayweather is a great boxer, but he ain’t god!! You people are treating him as if he is Superman and invincible… I can’t believe it. Every great boxer has his own faults and they can be exploited. Nobody’s unbeatable… Flyod looks unbeatable because he has been ensuring that he always faced boxers who suit his style and can be beaten with lesser risks, yes even the shopworn Cotto is amongst the list.

To win against Mayweather, Canelo has to first ensure that he slowly, but steadily, gets down to fighting weight. Atleast 158+ pounds so that his body is slowly getting adjusted to fightweight. Then, he should focus on his stamina by running 8-10 miles a day. When it comes to sparring, Canelo needs to spend some serious bucks and get the next closest boxer to Mayweather, for instance, Juan Marquel Marquez (I doubt it since Marquez is getting ready to fight Bradley). If not Marquez, maybe someone with more slick boxing skills, such Rigondeax (Yes, he is hardly 130 pounds, but he is the closest possible boxer that has the skillset equivalent of Mayweathers)

The only Mayweather-like fighters out there are Ward and Hopkins. I don’t think canelo will be spparring either of them. Their styles may be a bit different, but ring iq and how they dismantle their opponents is similar.

Canelo needs to just start coming down close to fight weight now, use some Crossfit exercises and lots of cardio so his body can adjust instead of waiting till close to fight time. Waiting till close to fight time and drainig himself will be his downfall. At least this way he won’t be made a fool of Sept 14th. Mayweather is too smart anyway and will school the young lion.

Exiled Yank-What Williams are you referring to as a cherrpicker?

Posted July 10, 2013 5:16 pm

Uncommon

My take on this fight is that Canelo is an old 22 year with the number of fights he has been in. His stamina issues won’t improve. I can’t see him doing much after the 5th round and I think we will all agree with that statement. And to anyone who thinks Floyd is a feather fisted puncher, he obviously packs enough pop on those punches to make all past fighters change their game plan. FMJ has mastered the art of hitting and not being hit. There is no game plan for Floyd, except that you know you gonna get hit and get hit often.

Posted July 10, 2013 5:09 pm

Exiled Yank

I like Canelo and think he has some real talent and potnetial, but he’s a cherry picker just like Williams. He needs to move up and fight men his own size. I bet he won’t be so dominant against guys like Martinez or 3G.
