“I think Maidana is an exciting fighter, but is pretty easy to hit.”
If you’ve followed Maidana throughout his career and especially since he hired Robert Garcia as his trainer, Mack, you should have notices subtle but significant differences in the way Maidana fights. His technical boxing skills have visibly improved under Garcia. He is displaying better footwork as well. He has honed his overall boxing abilities and shows improvement every time he steps into the ring. Maidana is not Diego Chavez. Maidana has already fought and nearly KOd Khan–back when Khan was thought to be the the hottest new fighter around; he TKOd Soto-Karass and Lopez. He has fought Devon Alexander and beaten Eric Morales–although Eric gave him a tough test. Maidana TKOd Ortiz and lost a narrow Decision to Andiry Kotelnik. He KOd previously undefeated Victor Cayo. Maidana has an 84% KO ratio. Thurman does have a slightly higher KO ratio than Maidana but Thurman has fought 16 times less than Maidana. Thurman has nowhere near the resume’ or experience that Maidana does. I think a good next fight for Thurman would be against Robert Guerrero. Robert ain’t the greatest thing since sliced bread but he’s an experienced vet, who’s skilled enough and tough enough to hang with Thurman for 12 rounds. On the other hand, I’m hoping for a Maidana/Broner matchup.Posted July 30, 2013 11:41 pm

When Matthysse beats Danny he’s moving up to 147… Nothing at 140 to interest him after that Super Fight… He’s taking on ALL comers at WW, where he’ll be a lot stronger.Posted July 29, 2013 10:05 pm
Don’t forget Lucas fights at 140 and Thurman fights at 147. There is a pretty big difference there.Posted July 29, 2013 8:52 pm
If Matthysse beats Garcia then I’m a believe. I think people are sucking him off too early.Posted July 29, 2013 5:12 pm
Not every punch thurman has been hit with have been of the impact of Matthysse’s…sure Thurman has weathered the storm….but they have not been from Lucas……big, BIG difference.Posted July 29, 2013 11:09 am
The title shot has to come and will. Besides, he has the interim title and meantime, Thurman doesn’t have to look very far for a credible opponent while further establishing his repertoire. Guerrero, Ortiz, Lucas stone hands, Malinaggi, etc. I like what I saw…..but not completely sold on him.Posted July 29, 2013 11:05 am
A very good win for Thurman in a tough fight. He earned a shot at Broner, and I hope he gets it. I think Maidana is an exciting fighter, but is pretty easy to hit. In any case, Thurmond deserves a title shot and is the top challenger for Broner. In the past, Broner has been accused of changing divisions to avoid the top opponents. Here is a real opponent for him, and I hope he takes the fight. Broner, I think, would enter as a favorite, but Thurman’s power would make it interesting all the way.Posted July 29, 2013 8:11 am

“Squared-Circle, I am confused about the function of appending statements with “real talk”.” what you expect from an insecure moron.Posted July 29, 2013 2:38 am
Maidana would likely stop Chaves as well. Thurman has some work to do before he’s ready for Maidana. Maidana/Broner is a much more desirable fight for me.Posted July 29, 2013 12:32 am
Squared-Circle, I am confused about the function of appending statements with “real talk”.
Should we doubt the veracity of statements lacking this clarification as some kind of “Fake talk” or is this in fact simply a signature? Hamster-talk.Posted July 28, 2013 11:57 pm
Having said that I do think he beat Kotelnik, simply because Kotelnik was so inactive. When Kotelnik actually did some work he was outboxing Alexander pretty handily.Posted July 28, 2013 11:46 pm
In some ways I don`t mind Alexander – you`d never call him a ducker, he has been in with a who’s who of the JWW and WW.
He`s busy, he is in there throwing punches.
It’s just that not many land, and St Louis judges seem to score him points for grunting like a chimp orgy.
You can`t score animals sounds as though they are a scoring punch, it is not right.
Next you`ll have a guy making a hippo rumble while feinting, or making Ostrich calls while parrying looking to score zoo points.Posted July 28, 2013 11:43 pm
Guys must FEAR Alexander because no one is targeting him besides Khan.Posted July 28, 2013 10:27 pm
The Truth Teller
Maidana will not beat Thurman. He looked vulnerable in his last fight againsy Lopez….Thurman is a class above Lopez and has a better chin. The only two guys I see that would beat Thurman right now are Mayweather and Mattyse…and I’m not sure Mattyse would be as deadly a puncher at 147 as he is at 140, so Mattyse beating Thurman is certainly not a foregone conclusion because Thurman can punch too and shown he can take a punch as well.Posted July 28, 2013 8:45 pm
Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)
Alexander has 25 pro fights and only 3 LEGIT KOs. That’s what I call feather-fisted — but not as bad as Yo Paulie who couldn’t crack an egg wearing plaster wraps. I happen to be one of those fans who appreciates boxer-punchers with REAL power who can really bang.
Devon’s jab is like a feather duster that just misses most of the time and when it lands, it barely grazes the faces of his opponents. But because of his flashy speed and grunting noises, it fools viewers and judges into thinking he’s landing and scoring a lot more than he actually is.
If those fights vs. Matthysse or Kotelnik would’ve been held in Argentina or Ukraine, Alexander “The Not So Great” would’ve lost both fights. Real talk.Posted July 28, 2013 7:50 pm
Why target Maidana when he’s already the mandatory challenger to Broner? Makes no sense to fight the WBA #1 when you’re already the WBA #1. Forget about the interim BS where these robber barrons pick pocket fighters. All it means is Thurman is the #1 contender and mandatory challenger, not Maidana.Posted July 28, 2013 6:38 pm
Alexander aint a bad fighter, he has good skills and decent pop on his punches but he aint exciting. I don’t care about him.Posted July 28, 2013 6:26 pm
I thought the Lucas fight was close. There where a few rounds that could of gone either way. All the clear cut rounds Lucas definitely won. But I still thought it was close. I don’t really think he is feather fisted. He has some good KOs and if he was feather fisted people would just walk straight in on himPosted July 28, 2013 6:07 pm
Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)
Feather-fisted Alexander is all flash and no smash. He got beat by both Matthysse and Kotelnik, but was given gift-wrapped decisions because those fights were held in his own backyard in St Louis.
Talk about corruption and robberies in pro boxing. Don’t ever agree to fight Devon Alexander in St. Louis, or Missouri for that matter, because he will get the decision no matter what.
Even if you outbox him 10 rounds to 2 and bust up his face. Dude is one of the most overrated Hype-Trains in the entire sport. He should already have 3 losses on his record and will never be the World Champion at WW. Real talk.Posted July 28, 2013 5:51 pm
maidana will ruin this hype job…Posted July 28, 2013 5:09 pm
Thurman doesn’t have the same boxing skills as Alexander. He has more power but Alexander is a better boxer. And a fight between Maidana and Thurman would be a fight like last night. But Maidana hits harder than Chavez in my opinion plus he is battle testedPosted July 28, 2013 4:16 pm
WHY IS EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT MAIDANA.. ALEXANDER SCHOOLED HIM…THURMAN WOULD BOX CIRCLES AROUND HIMPosted July 28, 2013 3:16 pm
Either Thurman or Maidana are now wba#1, so shouldn’t he be fighting who that is?Posted July 28, 2013 2:45 pm
THIS GUY WOULD KNOCK KELL BROOK SPARK OUTPosted July 28, 2013 2:42 pm
Good win for Thurman, been watching him for a bit & seen constant improvement. solid basics good power, & the desire to improve. Needs another fight or 2 & will be ready for the top guys; Madana, Rios, He would destroy Broner.Posted July 28, 2013 2:33 pm
THE REAL AMERICAN OAK
Please Boner, stay a welterweight.Posted July 28, 2013 12:55 pm
This would be a good fight between Thurman and Maidana. I thought Maidana was gonna fight Broner but not sure if its gonna happen. But I would like to see Thurman and Maidana fight, possibly for the belt Broner has because he definitely needs to move back downPosted July 28, 2013 12:44 pm
I can see a lot of top guys avoiding Thurman.Posted July 28, 2013 12:23 pm
Maidana may be a bad choice for Thurman as he is a far better puncher than cjavez. All different angles and more accurate than his fllow countryman.Thurman however can box and make it a similar fight as the alexander match, where Maidana realy never got off because the great never sat against the ropes and shrpshooted while always giving angles. The fight with maidana and Thurman is a step even further ahead for thurman if he could pull that off.Posted July 28, 2013 12:15 pm
Chavez was poor, just had one style which was perfectly suited to counter punch, I think Thurman would lose badly against a skilled operator like Kell Brook.Posted July 28, 2013 11:55 am
It’s Me, Ernie
I like Maidana, but he has too many faults in his defense for the likes of a boxer/puncher like Thurman…Posted July 28, 2013 11:51 am
It was be wise for broner to vacate wba belt n go back down to 135 r 140 if he can make weight. He is too short, too small, no enough reach n seems to have lost power when moving up to 147. He barely beat paulie n paulie has no power at all!! Thurman will crush ab as well as any other ww with good skills n power. But broner can clean out 135. Then challenge the elite at 140. Broner vs danny garcia, broner vs mathysse. There are some good fight at 140 for bronerPosted July 28, 2013 11:39 am
