Boystov is going backwards, fighting a 10 fight novice at this stage of his career shows that team Boystov are far from confident that their man can take on a genuine top 10 contender…… let alone a K brother!

Lamply is good also. I just don’t care for Max Kellerman or Harold lederman.

-Bears, I agree with your views on Merchant and Kellerman, 100%!!

-Wes, right on! Wlad takes a safe fight with Thompson as opposed to a fit, ready, hungry Denis Boytsov. If Boytsov is in prime shape, he can potentially beat just about anyone. He’s mastered the liver shot kinda like Golovkin did against Macklin.

Its stupid that hbo is letting merchant go. He’s the best thing about hbo and has been his whole life. The hbo crew sucks without him. Larry should have his hbo position til he dies. Max kellerman? Are you kidding me hbo? Max is not even a fraction of larry. If I was showtime I would offer larry a bunch of loot to be a commentator for them. Their commentator crew is equally horrid and uphauling. Now the best crews are at epix and sky sports. Hbo and showtime are garbage

My “fried chicken and donut juice” comment wasn’t to insult Thompson’s conditioning. That was his answer about his stomach after the first fight with Price which I thought was a hysterical answer. Thompson may be getting up in years but i’m pulling for him.

Thompson beat very easy Luan Krasniqi…and Luan Krasniki and Pulev have similar styles, so may be Tompson will be the winner despite his age. Also Kubrat Pulev was inactive for too long and I am not sure in what shape he will come.

Thompson is a dinosaur but is tougher than Dimitreko and more skilled than ustinov. Hard fight for both men, I think the younger man will get there by UD

Posted August 2, 2013 7:56 am

TARK

Everybody has been avoiding Pulev so he’s been on the shelf… Thompson doesn’t think that way.. He sees that Pulev has only 17 pro fights and a limited number of rounds.. He’s almost as green as a professional as David Price was, and only has a 53% KO ratio.

I just see Pulev winning easy.

TT would push more for VK if he won and probably would forgo a third rematch when the second he got blown out. He talks more about VK now, and VK would probably welcome that match if TT beat Pulev.

“Watch out for guys that train on fried chicken and donut juice.” – LOL. Thompson’s a bit pudgy nowadays but I think he’s in good shape. He’s just getting older to the point burning off the extra weight becomes harder.

mark, wladimir is not the type of fighter to risk losing his ibf title he work so hard to get. he’ll fight thompson a third time and not boystov.

Wes, he was hyped by some of us, not all of us. There was a Fury/Price devide, me personally i beleive Haye is the best HW in britain as do most people

don’t get me wrong thompson did great go to england as canon fodder with the deck stack against him. the ref the judges the british fans at ringside. to beat their young tiger. in most cases this work as plan. but two thing happen. thompson was tuffer then anyboby thought he would be. and price is a bum.

what brave for thompson to take on pulev at 42 thompson has nothing to lose and all to gain.

A bit of perspective..dimentrenko was bullied and battered by Eddie chambers, Ustinov was slow and unproven, and sprott? Knocked out by Audrey Harrison. Not such impressive names

I dont think we’ve seen enough yet to gauge how good Pulev is. Thompson has done it all but win the title and has experience. If pulev wins in style I’ll be very impressed. With regards to Price, the first fight Thompson was losing badly but the second fight in my opinion is one of the best heavyweight contests this year. Twas exciting, both went for it!!!!

Posted August 1, 2013 3:48 am

Bob Baljar

I think Kubrat can fight either left handed or right handed and can switch it up while in a fight. Left, right or right, left, which ever confuses his opponent. Nice ..He did this with Dinner Train Walker.

Posted August 1, 2013 2:13 am

The1

Thompson is for real. Drago is spot on about Price was considered the best thing since sliced bread. I was one of those guys. Thompson was not afraid to mix it up and and the second time he reassured it was no fluke. Either He just is too much for Price or Price has a tender chin and his emotions and intimidation didnt let him get it done the second time around. Either way proves two things. At best, Price beat himself and has chin issues. At worst, he’s only so good and Thompson is on a different level. Thompson upset him the first time or at least the consensus thought he was the underdog. The only way it was a minor upset is if people had price as the favorite slightly. The second fight price was underdog and as a whole; Thompson is too much for Price at least at this juncture.

We have to hand it to the old ring warrior. The former 2-time world heavyweight title challanger Tony “The Tiger” Thompson, world ranked as Nr. 4 # by IBF and Fightnews by 5# is brave for taking on such an undefeated young, hungry and potential heavyweight contender like Kubrat Pulev. Thompson who recently made two minor upsets by twice knocking out British heavyweight champion David Price in a row and proven even at 41 he is still a challange in the heavyweight league iand deserves 1-2 good pay-day fights. BUT this time I’m like many are sure to see Thompson lose this contenst becouse even if he is very ring skilled and won all his top fights (accept the 2 fights with champion Wladimir Klitschko), this challange will not end in victory. 32 year Kubrat Pulev have proven to be a gifted contender and so far quite dangerous to face as many top heavyweights seems to avoid go into the ring with him. Pulev’s best vicories on his record so far in his 4 year long PRO career is against Dominic Guinn, Michael Sprott, Alexander Dimitrenko, Travis Walker and Alexander Ustinov. Also Pulev is there in the top as he is world ranked as Nr. 1# by IBF, 8# by WBC, 11# by WBO and Fighnews haves him at 11# so he is there for his 1st world title fight against title defender Wladimir Klitschko. I will root for Tony Thompson BUT like I said, Kubrat Pulev will be to tough for the old warrior.

MARK IV

Naw..that won’t happen.

Posted July 31, 2013 6:19 pm

MARK IV

The IBF and WBA have Ustinov on there list of contenders. Therefore if Tua gets a flukie win he’s a contender once more.

Posted July 31, 2013 6:10 pm

MARK IV

Pulev is the #1 contender with the IBF so Vlad may take on the winner if it is Kubrat or face Boytsov who I think just moved to #1 wbo, rather than give Tony a third shot.

Posted July 31, 2013 6:06 pm

MARK IV

Hmmm… Ustinov is fighting Tua in a month.

Posted July 31, 2013 6:01 pm

Fight Aficionado

If Thompson pulls of the upset again we’d have him getting his face bashed in by Wlad a third time. That’s the only downside here. But if Puleve wins he’s a quality opponent.

Posted July 31, 2013 5:52 pm

CARLOS

@STEFANO: OK yeah that makes sense for their strategy. Adamek will probably still wind up losing though.

Posted July 31, 2013 5:42 pm

Fight Aficionado

“Michael Sprott, Alexander Dimitrenko as well as Alexander Ustinov – all of them inside the distance.” – That’s some pretty good comp when you think about it. They’re not easing Pulev into the top 10. Now with Thompson another live contender he’s either rising up fast or out of the top 10 faster. This is how they’re supposed to build contenders.

Posted July 31, 2013 5:17 pm

Good fight this but Pulev wins the more thompson punches the
worse it’ll become for him if tony really wants it Pulev will stop him

@CARLOS

Adamek and his team decided to go for the WBC title again. Vitali won’t be around much longer and Adamek hopes to become mandatory next year. Whoever will hold the belt, it’s will be less of a challenge than Wladimir.

The ” hopers ” are at it again , promoting Pulev as an imminent threat to Wlad .
Well , good luck with that one . Just a little while ago , they were ” grooming ”
Price to dethrone Wlad , that is until The Tiger , whom Wlad beat twice ran
those hopes aground . For all practical purposes , Price now is non existent .
Thankfully , even the most foolhardy are resisting to voice their hopes on
Fury , and we all know what Hayes looked like against Wlad , so a rematch is
not necessary , so I guess their best ” hope ” must be Pulev . God luck with that one boys . I can hear the excuses already ; that Pulev is a bum , and
Wlad fights nothing but short fat guys !

Adamek would probably be happy to face Vlad. He knows he’d lose but don’t forget the $$$. I would say that if Thompson wins then Vlad would still make him wait and take on Boystov or someone.

Who has Pulev beaten, Dimitrenko’s at best a top 20 fighter, Sproot, Ustinov, maybe top 50. Got dominated by Solis and Cammarelle, six times in the amateurs, “avoided heavyweight”, I doubt it.

Pulev isnt a southpaw Kornerman

Posted July 31, 2013 11:06 am

Derek

Why set up a mandatory with a fighter you don’t want to win? They must be confident in Pulev. I’d make him an odd-on favorite but an upset is not out of the question and if TT wins they should at least give him Vitali instead…it’s more fair age-wise anyway. The IBF doesn’t want Wlad to quit them or to have a threepeat fight no one will be interested in.

Posted July 31, 2013 10:53 am

KOrnerman

remember Pulev is southpaw too.

Posted July 31, 2013 10:38 am

Xavier

This is a good match. Kubrat Pulev has a test here against a big southpaw coming off confidence-boosting wins. Pulev probably wins a decision but TT has a decent chance and he has the edge in experience. TT would have to stop him to win, but he probably knows that already.

Posted July 31, 2013 7:19 am

KOrnerman

Easy fight for Pulev, he will stay in the pocket and nail Thomson with fast combinations, wide UD win.

Posted July 31, 2013 6:37 am

Drago

Pulev doesn not have that much pop and Thompson is pretty solid. I think Pulev will win by UD, but I won’t be too surprised if Thompson pull out something and drop him. Anyway, don’t fool yourselves, Wlad can dismantle both, maybe in the same night.

Thompson and wlad are a lot more skilled than people give them credit for. I remember their first match, which was good. Thompson did not tire, Wlad broke him down

Time to send Thompson into retirement.

Posted July 30, 2013 10:05 pm

I just want to make to “back to reality” points. 1) Thompson can take a solid punch and has shown that he is not shy getting in and mixing it up, not to mention the height advantage. Pulev is good but green. I don’t just count Thompson out of this by any angle. 2) Wlad will KO Pulev people. The straight right is too much for seasoned guys with solid beards. Pulev will not be the exception I assure you. David Haye is better than Pulev.

Posted July 30, 2013 10:04 pm

Pratt

Good fight and Thompson will not duck anybody. But I think the younger Pulev who take a good punch from Freight Train will take Thompson by TKO.
Credits to Toney for Twicey Pricey and making some payday while he can. I would not want to see Tony/Wlad 3 either Wlad/Pulev would be good. And Pulev is more hungry than Thompson and tougher with a great chin and will win this fight. Pulev is a straight ahead pressure type fighter and will be in Thompson’s face from the first bell. I t won’t last long. Pulev is tough guy and fearless.

Tony Thompson, even over 40, is still willing to fight anyone if the price is right. Some heavies simply wait for title fights to reach them by default, but Thompson keeps fighting. He doesn’t always win, but he always tries to win which makes for exciting fights. I haven’t seen Pulev, and he may win, but Thompson will not go easily.
