It’s certainly an interesting match. If Cleverly, inspired by the singing, chanting hoard of punters at Arrowpoint Stadium can manage to take Kovalev into the middle rounds of the fight, which figures to be unfamiliar territory to him, it could change things dramatically. The Russian might very well spook and Cleverly could take control and go on to a decisive points win and possibly even a win by TKO. OTOH, it would seem likely that Kovalev’s highly capable co-trainer, John David jackson, will have his fighter in excellent condition and well prepared to perform well for the full 12 round distance of a title fight. Like I say, this is a very interesting match. One I’m thoroughly looking forward to watching closely.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

The TRUTH is that Hopkins didn’t peep a word about The Krusher until fight with Cleverly was quite nearly finalized. If you think Kova has any fear of Ole Popkins or any reason to avoid him, you are sadly mistaken.

Popkins has two head-hunting killers coming for his head (Kova and Adonis), so his days are numbered. Real talk.

CORRECTAMUNDO

The sequence of events were as I stated. Hopkins accepted the Fight and then after that FACT, Kovalev took the Cleverly Fight. SO he took the EASIER and possibly more profitable route. And that’s HIS prerogative. I’m just stating the FACTS.

Posted August 2, 2013 7:11 pm

Fight Aficionado

WrongaRetard you know nothing about Kovalev and admitted you only recently watched his fights If you knew anything you’d know the sequence of announcements that occurred between Hopkins and Kovalev, which were widely reported facts. Your opinion means nothing, as always.

CORRECTAMUNDO

Nope. I’m on TRUTH street and FACT street. And I will continue to BE here.

CORRECTAMUNDO

Funny. IF Kovalev was Floyd, Broner, or Haye everyone would be HAMMERING him for taking on the LESSER opponent. But since he’s not, they APPLAUD him…..Funny how that works.

Posted August 2, 2013 12:59 pm

CORRECTAMUNDO

NICE spin but the FACT is that Hopkins SAID that he would face Kovalev before Kovalev finalized any Fight. Similar to when Haye was negotiating with Vitali but Valuev said he would Fight Haye SO Haye left negotiations with Vitali and took the Valuev Fight. …Once Hopkins SAID that he would take his mandatory against Kovalev everyone was waiting on the announcement but Kovalev shocked everyone by taking Cleverly over an opportunity to face the Living Legend. …may have been a smart move though because no one looks GOOD against Hopkins. Even in VICTORY. He’s the human stock dropper.

Posted August 2, 2013 12:55 pm

Fight Aficionado

WrongAmundo, Bhop said nothing about Kovalev until 3 days before the bout with Cleverly was announced. Obv Bhop knew negotiations were already wrapping up, so he issued that press release to allay accusations that he was in fact ducking Kovalev, who was his mandatory. Kovalev wasn’t going to wait around for Bhop to maybe or maybe not fight him.

Hey, that’s my bike!!! – I think your wrong about Hopkins. Hopkins has the skills to cancel out those types of fighters. Its the fighters with more pure fundemental skills Hopkins has trouble with. Remember Pavlik smashing everyone to pieces and everyone in boxing being scared for Hopkins safety pre their fight. Hopkins made Pavlik look awful. And a those kind of fighters do. Mayweather, Hopkins (until he’s passed it) and Ward all have the skills to make the bangers look poor. Look at Froch hitting thin air against Ward for example.

After watching Kovalev’s recent fights as a Brit I gotta say I fear for Clevely on this one. And I’m not the only one as I logged onto my bokkie’s site tempted to have sneaky bet on Kovalev if the bokkies had mis judges this one, only to find they have the Russian favorite! Considering this one is in the UK thats a bold statement in my opinion. This could well be the acid test for both fighters to see where they truely lie in the sport. On one hand I think Cleverly has some great skills and tends to get himself in a tear up easily due to the fact he has not yet been in a fight where his slugging skills have not won through in the end, and he also likes to put a show on. Therefore this could be the first fight where if he starts to come off second best he will have to adapt and we will really see how good those skills are, and if he can out box Kovalev to a decision. On the other hand you have Kovalev who looks at the minute like he can destroy anyone. Yet he’s yet to be in with a fighter with a serious skill set. In my experience every walk forward banger eventually gets beat by that boxer with the fundemental skill set to make them look silly. I can rememebr after the Tyszu fight thinking that I couldnt see anyone Ricky Hatton could not walk through. Abraham also looked a beast at one point at middleweight. So the question is just how good are Cleverlys skills. Is he the next Calzaghe who had the skills to Make a prime Kessler look average? Time will tell!

Posted August 2, 2013 8:46 am

Hey, that’s my bike!!!

Correctamundo is full of it. Hopkins went quiet as soon as Kovalev and Stevenson came onto the scene within weeks of each other with a BANG!!! Hopkins wants no part of either fighter. Hopkins got bullied by Dawson and would fill his pants at the thought of facing Stevenson or Kovalev.

Whoever said Calzaghe hid behind the WBO belt obviously wasnt really watching the sport at the time and seeing how things developed. He would have unified the division were it not for the cheats in Germany who were riding the Sven Ottke gravy train. Ottke held the WBA and IBF versions. Ottke stole the IBF from Brewer and the WBA from Mitchel in very dubious decisions. Calzaghe beat both of these fighters convincingly after Ottke and would have unified the belts were it not for cheating German. The WBC title was being passed around by the likes of Robin Reid and Woodhall who refused to fight Joe until they had lost the belts. Calzaghe was THE most avioded fighter of the era.

Posted August 2, 2013 8:34 am

TomCribb

Dont think Calzaghe exactly hid behind the WBO belt…he tried to tempt Hopkins up to SM twice and Hopkins chickened out and jumped to LHW instead. Ottke was the only other name at SM Calzaghe could have fought, and Ottke was terrified of Calzaghe, refused to fight him. He beat Eubank, Mitchell, Brewer, Reid, Shieka (who had just beat Glen Johnson), Kessler, Woodhall and Lacy…Sure he could have fought Andrade, Mundine, Frankie Liles (who pulled out at last minute), Herol Graham, Thomas Tate, Eric Lucas, Glenn Catley etc…but no one would seriously take those guys over Calzaghe anyway.

CORRECTAMUNDO

Cleverly has a long way to go. The way he throws his shots needs a lot of work. Almost as BAD as Pascal. IF the shots had more POP then you could probably get away with it since he still finds a way to connect. But trading FEATHERS for BRICKS isn’t an even trade. Kovalev is going to connect TOO and he’s going to DO MUCH more damage. Kovalev by Welshman WILTING stoppage.

Posted August 2, 2013 6:08 am

CORRECTAMUNDO

CORRECTIONS….chance IS to practice…..

…With the way he throws now….

Posted August 2, 2013 5:58 am

CORRECTAMUNDO

I finally had a chance to take a close LOOK at both Fighters and its easy to see that Cleverly is going to get knocked out. His Punches are TOO long and wide. His only chance to practice more straight punches and more compact punches on his hooks. With the way he throws not Kovalev is definitely going to check that CHIN and knock him out. It won’t even get past 6 rounds….Hopkins can beat Cleverly right now. Lets see IF Kovalev can stop Hopkins….OH I forgot. Kovalev opted for Cleverly over Hopkins because he wanted the EASIER route to the Belt. Hopkins was ready to rumble. Would have loved to see him try to nullify Kovalev’s Offense.

Mick the Marmalizer

Hopefully Clev wins this & starts fighting unification fights. Just as Calzaghe he’s hidden behind the WBO belt for too long. Joe only gained credibility after the Lacy fight & that’s the way Clev must go, be it Hopkins or Shumenov. Stephenson is out of the equation for now due to his forth coming fight with Cloud + the fact that Tony Bellew is #1 mandatory contender with the WBC. The ca$h is waiting for NC if only he’s prepared to travel. as I’ve stated before Shumenov offered him a 50% cut on neutral ground(USA) but team Clev flatly turned it down. Things could really hot up @ 175Lb if only the promotors/managers can get it together!

Lyndon

For Cleverly to win he has to be perfect and not get hit even once. Even one shot from Kovalev will shock and awe Cleverly to hell. Of course, Cleverly can’t avoid everything as no one is perfect. So Cleverly will take his beating for 4-5 rounds, put on an act as though Kovalev can’t hurt him, and then stay seated or lay on the canvass moaning and babbling about how he forgot to pay his hydro bill or something.

“Kovalev has a a strong stance.. good movement.. defends well.. jabs well.. cuts the ring much better.. Cleverly’s team miscalculated.” – Agree with TARK on this one. BTW why are dudes comparing Kovalev to Lacy? There’s no similarities except both had a good punch. Lacy’s power was overrated and his boxing skills were always poor. Kovalev’s power gets a little hype but not as much as Lacy’s was, plus his boxing skills aren’t fully appreciated.

With fighters like Kovalev you have to be able to take it and not just dish it out, cause he’ll be right there in your face, he’s beatable like all fighters but it will take a hard, accurate puncher with a good chin to do it

Clev will dominate Krusher after the first couple of rounds.

WHAT!?!

Cleverly is going down hard. Over rated paper champ who has fought no live bodies. This is a step up for Cleverly and he will be done by the end of Round 6. His facade as a macho fighter will take over and it will be sleepy bye byes for this Brit big mouth. Home fight, home ref, home judges, no excuses.

TARK

Forget Lacy… I knew he was nothing when I saw him struggle with Omar Sheika.. He was a Joe Frazier style left hooker. Super easy to hit.. one dimensional.. a sucker for 45′s.. a sucker for overhand rights.

Kovalev has a a strong stance.. good movement.. defends well.. jabs well.. cuts the ring much better.. Cleverly’s team miscalculated.

Before and after

Lacy was the next big thing, he was getting more hyped than Kovlev, loses, oh no he wasn’t very good, because he got beat and ruined by Calzaghe, which is what they may say about Kovalev if a British boxer Cleverly beats him.

CurlyQ.Howard

Not to be insulting, but Lacy is not a good comparison to Kovalev. It isn’t even close.

Frank Warren knows he can beat Kovalev, so does Cleverly, would not of took the risk, could of fought other fighters for alot of money, but this is a perfect opportunity to get Cleverly really known on the world stage, then the money fights.

I think they should of gave Kovalev a few more fights, steadily rising in competition before putting him in with Cleverly, it is big step up in competition for Kovalev.

Kovalev, GGG & Provo are relentless bulldozers, bruisers; they don’t-seldom-take you out with one shot-like Adonis-but beat you half to death in 7, 8, 9 rounds…they remind me of Chavez Sr. To fight these guys shorten your career because they’re heavy-handed & don’t let you rest not even a second of a round, punching to the head & body with equal ferocity. To beat these beasts you have to be not only a good boxer but a good puncher as well; I don’t know who is advising Nathan but I give him full credit for taking this fight & I wish him good luck-he’s going to need it-

Kovalev has the poise, footwork, balance, and combination punching that would make him dangerous even without the punching power. That he has natural KO power is why he can be a star soon. If Kovalev was American the nut slurping tool boxes would be fisting themselves over him by now.

Posted July 31, 2013 5:14 pm

Once Kovalev KTFO Cleverly there will be growing comparisons to GGG, and his fan base will grow. Remember just a couple years ago GGG was fighting in hotel conference rooms of 500 people off TV. Now he’s an emergying star. Kovalev has all the attributes of a TV friendly star, except he’s Russian.

Clev has had an awful habit of fighting at 3/4 range and looking to exchange. He must be at full range for this fight and use his jab and speed to avoid Kovelev especiaally early on. If he can avoid any macho crap then I’m sure Cleverly can beat this guy. A unanimous 12 round decision would be ideal for Clev and make HBO realize that he is a quality fighter.

Maybe by Ward… He’s the only threat to Kovalev around the weight. but he’d have to go to LHW… With 5 more fights Kovalev beats anyone out there… He’s still a little green but the Cleverly fight could be a great 12-round experience for him… If he stops Cleverly he’s really going to have problems getting the right fights.
