Agree Daz, and Leonard, wow, Geale not a skilled boxer? Very few fighters in boxing let alone the middle weight division are able move in and out of range with Geale’s speed and agility, let alone throw as many punches and combinations as he does while in there without getting hit … hitting without getting hit is the skill of boxing man..

geale is by no means a highly skilled or powerful boxer. But he does have a great engine, a tough chin and tough skin too. He also seems to be a guy with the mental steel and strength of character required at championship level. So he is a tough nights work for most opponents. It will take a career best performance over the entire 12 rounds from Barker to beat him. barker cannot afford to fade in the second half of the fight like he did against Belgecham and Martinez to name just two. It all hinges on whether Barker can fight hard for the entire 12 rounds……he never has done before.

Im picking Geale in a tough fight and Cleverly in a dec. showing better boxing skills and using a good ring IQ.Both these fights should be great and are good match ups,sad that overall alot of people might over look how good these 2 fights are.

@DJ Daz – “It appeared to me that even the last flurry he took and the final punch were to the gloves and he went down and couldn’t get up”

Yeah, you’re right, but from what I read the issue for Barker was an ear injury caused by that last punch. So it wasn’t so much a concussion-based KO as it was an injury-based KO (which doesn’t really give an indication of Barker’s chin).
I think the bigger issue for Barker was that he didn’t seem to be able to solve the Martinez straight left counter… he knew it was coming, and he’d occassionally bait it, but then he’d just try to get out of range rather than bait and counter. Geale won’t throw counter shots with the same power, but he’ll follow up each counter with a much larger punch count.
So for Barker to win, he has to be ready to trade in this fight (though I’m picking my countryman Geale to pull a close decision in this one).

Barker is claiming to be a new man these days, fitter stronger, free from all the injuries that have plagued his career etc. If this is true and not just hype, and we really do have Barker Version 2.0 then certainly he does have a chance. He has many advantages over Geale..height, reach, a better jab, crisper harder punches to name just a few. If this was a 6 or 8 round fight I would back Barker all the way. It is hard to name even one thing that Geale does particularly well….but he just keeps on doing it for 3 minutes a round for 12 rounds and so far that has got him through. I scored the Geale -Sturm fight to Sturm, and believe that Geale was very lucky that night. Macklin beat Sturm far more convincingly.

Wonder how much Cleverly’s referee will try to interfere with the fight. He will do all he can to protect Cleverly. Cleverly’s judges have already filled out their cards. Kovalev will need a knockout to get a draw………I have read on forum that the ref will be unfair to Kovalev. How much does Cleverly know about this? It appears that he is depending on it………..

If Martinez was able to wear down Barker with his box and move style, Geale will do the same with his box and pressure style.

An interesting observation that Barker is stronger, only 2 fights since Martinez. The Italian was a sacrificial lamb and I heard the other opponent wasn’t much better. Geale won’t sit there to be hit and he throws plenty back and has deceptive strength & power. Will be interesting and we won’t have long now.

Hey, That’s my Bike!!!

Geale is better than Barker and will win a comfortable UD. I don’t understand how Geale could win by robbery when the fight is in USA and we have a Aussie and a Pom fighting. Excuses flowing already. I like Kovalev power and believe he is a lot smarter in the ring than he has had a chance to show yet. Cleverly will get reckless and drop his hands at some point. He has done this regularly in the past. Kovalev by KO.

Barker is much stronger now, much better now than he was against Martinez, Barker by late stoppage.

I have just watched the Martinez-Barker bout and it seems to me Barker is really talking up his performance there. He may have broken Martinez’s nose but from my perspective I saw Martinez basically in control of the fight most of the time with Barker putting on a gutsy display but showing his limitations at the top level. Let me know if I’m wrong but it appeared that a lot of the punches Barker was taking were to the gloves. It appeared to me that even the last flurry he took and the final punch were to the gloves and he went down and couldn’t get up, the man obviously has a lot heart but it raised questions to me on his durability when in a tough fight. He’ll be in tough fight this weekend. Geale by UD or late stoppage.

Mr Gav

A big night for British boxing could end up with another world champion or losing one. I’m guessing cleverly by us and barker getting robbed by ud

GEALE
