Hopkins is 50-years old next year, it amazes me people still think he can fight at the top level.

I can’t say that I have ever heard of that the former undisputed, unifed middleweight world champion and reigning 3-time light heavyweight world champion Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins have called out any fighter below middleweight class (1990-2005) and as a Light heavyweight fighter (2006-present) he have only challanged fighters his own size or bigger men. Hopkins even went as far in a try to move up as high as heavyweighht in order to fight Oleg Maskaiev in 2006 for the WBC title BUT thankfully he did not as that is to far from his original weight class. Bernard Hopkins is a legend and one of the very best of all times – Like it or not but its the truth. 40+ to 48 years of age and have won the Light heavyweight world title 3-times is something NO OTHER boxer have achived in boxing history and never will I belive.First and only boxer so far to have conqerd and unifed all 4 major world title belts + the Lioneal world title as well in a weight class and have them all at same time is only Hopkins to have done.

I don’t think he would. He may get roughed up by Hopkins and beat by decision.

@Correctamundo:

You may be right that Hopkins would rather get himself disqualified than get knocked out; in fact, his ego being what it is, I’m quite sure that he would. However, once he gets buzzed by Kovalev, he may not get the chance, as the Russian is a brutal finisher: once he sees his prey hurt, he won’t let them get away with anything.

Consider this: when was the last time Hopkins fought a boxer-puncher with a KO record anything like Kovalev’s? The truth is that Hopkins has NEVER been in with a really concussive puncher at light heavy (or perhaps even at 160), never mind one who is as accurate with his punches as Kovalev.

So again, considering that Pascal had Hopkins down more than once, and Pascal only had a 50% KO rate, and is less accurate than Kovalev, it’s certainly not beyond the bounds of possibility that Kovalev’s combination of speed, accuracy, punch-volume and power lead him to KO Hopkins.

But yes, Hopkins is smart (in a kind of criminal-IQ sort of way), so I imagine he will find a way to duck Kovalev while making it look like he isn’t.

Posted August 19, 2013 7:51 am

CORRECTAMUNDO

Kovalev will beat Hopkins but I don’t know about stopping him. Hopkins Defense and Boxing IQ are TOO GREAT to get stopped….unless there’s a SISSYFIED ref in there. He’s smart enough to get DQ’d for holding or he’ll pull a Fight changing Headbutt rather than be knocked out….One thing you can bet on is Hopkins is NOT getting knocked out. Defense keeps you IN the Fight. Maybe not on the scorecards but it keeps you in there to hear the Final bell.

Posted August 19, 2013 6:51 am

Crap: I meant HOPKINS has 2 KOs in his last 20 fights (10%), of course — Kovalev has more like 20 (100%).

Posted August 19, 2013 5:00 am

TARK

Supreme Court…. If Hopkins fights Kovalev he’s a gone goose.. Kovalev is too good a boxer and puncher.

Hopkins was beaten in his first fight.. And when he had 23 fights he lost again.

So far Kovalev hasn’t lost… He just destroyed an undefeated World Champion, 26-0, fighting in the guy’s backyard.. Hopkins can’t match him on that scale, and will NEVER match him.

Murat was no longer the mandatory but Bernard is still taking the fight and its clearly in order to avoid his mandatory Kovalev who is not afraid of anyone

Watch folks, the pack keeps howling: “Kovalev will do this, he will do that”…
But none of these blue collars can provide an excuse regarding why KOVALED gave in his mandatory option and a higher paycheque against Hopkins to fight Cleverly…

Why?

Once again, BHop is prepared to shred your hearts?
( remember Pavlik)
B-Hop is asking in the Video, ” I have a Belt, I have the status of legend”, why is Kovalev going to UK to fight for a lesser cheque?
You answer, herd of morons!
Kovalev is slow and wide open, even Stevie Wonder saw that…..

And learn more about Boxing Hidalgo. You picked Cleverly when he had NO shot. Anyone who has any ability to analyze Fighters could see that this would be a stoppage WIN for Kovalev. It was FEATHERS vs BRICKS and a Highly SKILLED Puncher vs an average Puncher at BEST. Not very difficult to pick…..unless you have Half a brain.

Supreme, anyone with common sense can google these quotes and find numerous credible links. Hopkins is not credible proven by the very fact he is fighting Murat who is longer the #1 mandatory, has no belts, or fan fare.

After Kovalev became Hopkins mandatory, Schaefer made the following quotes Sports Illustrated and various sports writers:

“I don’t know how attractive that fight is. I’ve never heard of [Kovalev]. That doesn’t mean he is now a good. Bernard wants historically significant fights, and that means unifications.”

“I don’t know how attractive that fight is. I’ve never heard of [Kovalev], many people have never heard of him.”

I’m not lying. I simply asked a question and was waiting for a response. Where did you get your info that said Golden Boy claimed not to know who he is? I mean apparently he isn’t well known did you see the crowd?

Kovalev is good and he is a good puncher, but beating the overrated Coverly says nothing.

Peeg and Supreme Why lie? Kovalev VS. Cleverly were already in talks when Murat’s visa problems suddenly made Kovalev Hopkin’s mandatory. Team Cleverly were heehawing around so kathy Duva (Kovalev’s promoter) immediately began emailing Golden Boy and publicly calling out Hopkins but Golden Boy said “few fans have ever heard of kovalev”

GGG called out Hopkins. Hopkins never called out GGG. And he is defeinding his belt against a light heavy. All his fights have been against Light Heavies since moving to that division. Not sure where all this he is trying to make a name off smaller fighters is coming from.

Posted August 18, 2013 12:35 pm

J.wales

No Hopkins is still trying to build his legacy on much littler fellers like Martinez, GGG, etc.. while bypassing the big boys near his own weight, and this fear would not be conducive for a fighter like Hopkins who works hard to intimidate

Sergie Kovalev looked very dangerous, more like Glovetikin, then Lacy. In the fight against Cleverly he should that he is a rare explosive puncher, with well above average boxing skills. The only fighter that has a chance of beating Kovalev is Andre Ward. In Which before the was 75% now after the fight I give Ward a 50% chance of winning. I don’t think Hopkins wants to fight Kovalev since he will definately get his ass whipped by a W_ _ _ _ B_ _. Against Adonis Stevans an exciting all action fight with Kovalevs boxing skills be way to much for Adonis Stevens. Which will allow Sergie Kovalev do land his punches, while avoiding Adonis Stevens power punches

I would take Hopkins and Ward over Kovalev. Ward is not even a light heavy but I would still take him over Kovalev. I would like to see Kovalev vs Stevenson.

righthook,

Ward wins in the super six to get home field advantage, now because you guys are butt hurt he should leave his home town because you think he should. Who are you does he know you will he listen to you the answer I’m sure is no. If someone wants what you have why would you take it to them they should come and get it. Your logic is idiotic, makes no sense what so ever. If I had a title and you wanted to fight me for it I should come to where you live where there’s a possibility of so home cooking in the decision in your favor. No, I’m not that dumb(maybe a little stupid), you would have to come to my home turf or some city in the U.S. not connected to either of us. Ward beat everyone in the super six, winning the option of fighting on his home turf by not losing. When everyone else won they fought in their home towns, but since ward got to fight at home because he smoked everyone he fought its now unfair. I can’t see the logic in your arguement, it just doesn’t make sense.

Old guy, Kovalev is as powerful as Foreman was in his early stages, against some good fighters but Ward & Hopkins are special in a very distinctive & proven way; I see Ward salivating about a fight against Kovalev but I think BHops will beat him to it…they both will school him, believe it or not…

I thin all this talk of ward is rubbish, Kovalev should fight stevenson in USA then fight Bernard the cheat hopkins in Russia, most Americans dont travel in the case of that wuss Andre Ward he is a california fighter who wont even fight outside his home state.

Why all this talk of Andre Ward? He fight’s @ 168Lb & will never move to 175. He would expect kovalev to move down to 168 & fight in Oakland CA!

Congratulations to Kovalev, he came over here and did the business on Cleverly. After seeing his highlight reel the other day I thought to myself “cleverly is going to have real problems with this fella”. I didn’t expect him to make such short work of it all though!! Fair play to Nathan for taking such a risky fight. He’s a good fighter but not exceptional which is the level needed to operate in a talent rich light heavy weight division.

Posted August 18, 2013 4:41 am

Kovalev would beat the crap out of Hopkins, Stevenson, Pascal, Ward or any other light heavy weight. So many were predicting Cleverly to knock Kovalev out, but I knew better. Hell, Hopkins lost to Dawson! Ward has no real power, Kovalev would walk right through him.

Mick the Marmalizer

So what’s next for Nathan Cleverley? & UK boxing in the light-heavyweight division in general. Tony Bellew is the WBC #1 mandatory contender @ 175Lb, so a fight with Adonis Stephenson looks likely. Clev is still young & talented enough to come back, but needs to naturally return to the drawing board. The BBBofC have ordered new Commonwealth champion Enzo Maccarinelli to contest the vacant British title against English champion Bob Ajisafe before the end of the year, so surely the logical move would be to challenge the winner. Either that or relocate to the USA.

Posted August 18, 2013 3:56 am

Kovalev looked good but let’s not get over-excited. UK fans who know boxing were aware that Cleverly was a paper champion with no credible opponents on his record.

Posted August 18, 2013 3:36 am

Kovalev will knock out all the light heavyweight champions. Hopkins refused to fight him, so he went into Cleverly’s home town and knocked him out. The ref actually had to carry Cleverly back to him corner. I have never seen any thing like it! In the fourth round, Kovalev destroyed Cleverly! Hell, even Dawson beat Hopkins! Ward would get knocked out if he were to fight Kovalev. Ward will not get into a ring with Kovalev.

Posted August 18, 2013 3:05 am

Ward has no power, kovalev will walk straight through him, old popkins will also get destroyed, even dawson beat him. Kovalev can box and has great power, this makes him special

Kovalev seem to do what he was supposed to do. Thought Cleverly would show something but really wasn’t impressed with him. Congrats to Kovalev. Like to see home with either Stevenson or Hopkins. I think Hopkins would neutralize him and maybe stop him late. Him and Pascal would be a good fight also
