I would not be too concern with jr weight being too low as he Still a young fighter ,you don’t see many young fighter gassing out,but you will gas out of you don’t know how to relax and get over excited while fighting, the benifit is chevez speed will now be as fast or faster than Sergio .just as Sergio came down to Paul Williams 2 catchweight fight I did say that fight will be diffrent as Sergio lower weight would make him faster, and he was faster. Same here. And if chevez can get Martinez trading early, he heading for a wins as it’s means Martinez is over excited and can gas out by 7+ round if he can’t accomplish a ko .,Martinez said he will work (box) the body and chevez said he will make Martinez exchange,so the by the 3 round we could see who plans is working.

Tark, with the edge in handspeed, height, reach, and footwkork, Khan defeats Garcia 3 out of 4 times if he simply shortens his workrate. He has to pot shot Garcia or jab him to death from the outside and limit his number of combination punches per round. Garcia will have a very difficult time countering his shots if Khan doesn’t give him a large sample at one time. That’s why he lost. Not because Garcia is come great pressure fighter because he’s not. Garcia fights at midrange. He doesn’t fight well on the inside and doesn’t apply great pressure. Why do you think Mayweather and Broner don’t throw very much in combination and usually elect to pot shot their opponents? Because they know that their handspeed is too fast to react on. Khan must keep moving laterally and use his jab to score from the outside. Lateral movement always disrupts a counterpunchers timing and rhythm. As long as Khan keeps moving just like in the first two rounds of their fight, he wins easily because Garcia is not an overly effective aggressor.

WTF?

All this talk about Chavez Jr. having a great chin is laughable.. who the Hell has he fought that tested his chin? What great KO artist did he fight at was his actual size??? When he does that and takes some devastating shots and gets past those shots with no issues then we can talk about Chavez Jr. having a great Chin.. but until then it’s a claim as silly as claiming Chavez Jr. is any kind of great Boxer… It’s all part of the illusion… aka Con Job…

Posted September 14, 2012 1:08 pm

TARK

Khan will never beat Garcia until he improves his infighting skills, his inside defense, and his clinching skills.. He will end up throwing like crazy to keep Garcia off of him and eventually absorb well timed bombs that will put him out.. As for Chavez-Martinez, there is no mystery to this fight.. Martinez is a highly skilled boxer who should win on points if the match is honestly judged — and there’s some doubl about that.. Chavez has one of the best chins in boxing so he should endure the 12… Martinez has about a 40% chance of beating Chavez up so bad they stop it — but I think putting it in the hands of the judges is a big part of the Chavez plan for victory.

Compared to the way he normally conducts himself he has gone FAR out of his way to talk trash. He never talks nonsense but now he’s on the big stage because of Chavez, this fight can sell it self if he’s that confident then he should let his fists do the talking period.

I hope you guys enjoy the “Head to Head” article which will be published on Saturday afternoon…i will size up both fighters and come up with crucial keys to victory for both men…and yes, just for fun, I will make my official prediction at the bottom of the article…I will also publish a wildcard “Head to Head” article for any other match-up on Saturday night…for any special match-up requests, please send me an email at herron.joseph2112@att.net. Thanks!!

This article forgot one simple reason for Martinez’s venom. PROMOTION. This is the hottest fght of the year so far and it is largely due to the venom both men have been slinging at each other for a year. Martinez took a page from Mayweather, and you’ll see the no matter who wins they’l both be congratulating each other and smiling by the end of the fight

UJelly?

Chavez has 3 stoppages in his last 10, and only one of them had anything to do with punching power (i.e. Lehoullier… Manfredo was barely hurt and the fight was cut early, and Lee was just worn down by relentless pressure not incredible punching power). Pavlik has more stoppages in his last 10 and that’s even including the fact that he lost 2 of those fights (and there is Rubio on both of their last 10 who went the distance with Chavez but retired against Pavlik)!

It’s yet to be seen how sturdy Chavez truly is… it’s hard to tell at this point. Pavlik has a great chin and it’s been tested by better guys than Chavez has ever even been in the ring with. The only true puncher that Chavez has been in with so far was Rubio, but as Pavlik already showed, Rubio can be shutdown by a good fighter (i.e. even Lemieux had Rubio shutdown up until he tired out, and only then did Rubio really start to show his power)… so I don’t think Chavez really got chin-checked in that bout.
So I think Saturday will be the first time we get a true indication of Chavez’ durability at the world-class level against a guy with KO power.

Big RIch

Sergio Martinez has that Joe Calzaghe quality, which is to step it up when he is in trouble. Joe did it against Kessler, Jones Jr and Hopkins. I think emotions only put Sergio more in the zone.
I think the best chance JCC jr has is to get Sergio oin the canvass early

Posted September 13, 2012 11:16 pm

Chavez stops Martinez before the 12th rd. the fight will end by the 11th rd and Martinez will have run 5 marathons before his inevitible tko loss to Chavez. Jr is sturdier than both Pavlik and Williams, plus he’s a better puncher than either one of thses guys. Chavez will wear Martinez down with pressure, and dispose of him with crisp inside punches to the body and chin.

Posted September 13, 2012 10:44 pm

Jab

Chavez is, and has always been, a one dimensional fighter. He can’t fight backing up and his power is in moving forward and landing on a stationary target. So I see Martinez setting a fast pace early against the slow starting Chavez. Using his speed to go inside with hard body shots to make Chavez feel that sudden overnight massive weight gain, and landing damaging counter punches to the head from the outside. At some point Chavez will fall into the trap of walking into blows as he trys to pressure Martinez and at that time it’s, game over!

How are you doing, Tark? I, like many boxing writers and reporters, have made many predictions that haven’t really panned out…no one truly knows what is going to happen in any fight and that’s not the point for any of my “Head to Head” articles…I take great pride in my analysis pieces and my keys to victory are always spot on…the predicitions are merely for entertainment. I have never claimed to be a handicapper. Boxing is so difficult to predict that even the most reliable of handicappers are wrong…hence the Amir Khan/Danny Garcia bout. I don’t take the prediction portion of my analysis articles seriously…I think it’s funny that you are so critical about the least important portion of my Head to Head articles.

I too think Kahn could beat Garcia in a rematch. Kahn just needs to be more patient and aware of when he’s being timed.

Posted September 13, 2012 9:20 pm

There’s no revealing, exposing, confirming the status of Martinez. He’s proven himself to be one of the world’s best. Chavez is the one to be tested. He had to start is pro career slow because he had no amateur career — essentially he was learning the game with each fight. And he has improved considerably — his biggest problem is a lack of defense and no jab. I fear he’s going to learn the importance of both this weekend and pay a VERY heavy price for not having either. Because Martinez is going to make him pay, pay often.

Khan is a better boxer, he will beat Garcia if they fight again,Khan started to trade punches when he doesn’t have to, Garcia has a great left hook, any fighter has to aware of that.

i hope neither of these guys bust out with gushing cuts that will stop the fight early. i know it’s fight-related but i want these guys to have at least 10 rounds to settle this contest. this is a truth-serum matchup that will clarify the rankings and alternately confirm/expose/reveal the actual status of both these fighters. i’m looking forward to a good and solid scrap.

Boxing is an occupation—like politics—where everyone is an expert. Fans feel that since they’ve watched boxing for years they have insights others lack. If I’m not mistaken Herron predicted Jan Zaveck would upset Andre Berto when his chances were nil …. Amir Khan would have been stopped by Garcia whatever tactics he employed. When a real good fighter applies pressure and cuts the ring off on Amir, Khan has 3 options—run, grab, or fight like mad. Since Khan is a boxer and not a fighter he soon resorts to grabbing or running. Since excessive running is a foul Khan starts grabbing and pushing. Since Khan is an inept clincher and infighter he gets ripped to pieces. Now if the other fighter is a pure boxer Khan has a great chance because that’s his game—but Garcia has exceptionally well rounded skills.

I’m most interested in the size of the ring for Saturday’s fight. Andy Lee was given a phone booth to fight Chavez in. If Martinez negotiated a proper-sized ring, he’ll have plenty of room to work, and Chavez will get picked apart — eventually causing Jr’s face to be swollen and/or cut-up and the fight stopped.

I usually don’t write editorials, but I found yesterday’s press conference to be very intriguing. Sergio’s promoter Lou DiBella even stated that he’s never heard his fighter take an opponent so personally prior to this fight. This raises quite a few red flags leading into this fight. Chavez would be wise to fight Sergio Martinez like he did Peter Mafredo Jr. and force Sergio to take the lead. Make him come forward and catch him when he misses while falling out of position…both Barker and Macklin had success early by making Martinez come forward. But, Chavez realizes that he more than likely won’t be in the proper condition to use the ring throughout the entire fight so he’s elected to get under Maravilla’s skin; attempting to bait Sergio in a fire fight on the inside. Have his tactics worked? Will Sergio elect to bang with the bigger fighter on the inside? I personally feel that Sergio is too smart to give Chavez that opening. In this match-up age is not a hinderance for Sergio…with age comes great wisdom. My belief is that you will see the difference in mentality on Saturday night…this will be the biggest difference and deciding factor in the fight.

I see Martinez coming out very fast too establish who the better fighter is. Chavez jr. Will withstand Martinez’s onslaught for a few rounds as he keep plodding forward hoping to catch Martinez on the ropes. Chavez wants to make this a brawl but instead he will get a boxing lesson.

hahaha!! that’s comical. The ONLY reason why Chavez insists that Maravilla STAND STILL is because that’s the ONLY way he’ll win….they (Chavez & team) know DAMN WELL that Martinez is too slick. They want him standing still against the ropes, like Lee did, but Martinez is too smart for that. He’s gonna box Chavez’s ears off and stop him late.

Maravilla as been seen speaking calmly and full of confidence…he has NOT gone out of his way to disrespect, he’s only said things during interviews when he’s asked and so he answers appropriately..plus, he’s not saying things we don’t already know.

in one of the early prefight press conferences julio cesare chavez sr asked “maravilla” are you going to stand in the center of the ring and fight like a man “maravilla” replied no i am going to run run like a coyote and run he will if he try’s to trade with chavez jr he will be KO’ed in 1 round bet on it

Posted September 13, 2012 4:56 pm

Manfredo?? Um, Okay, Martinez is LEAGUES, I mean LEAGUES above Manfredo….they shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence. Put it this way, Martinez wouldn’t even be allowed to fight Manfredo due to TOTAL MISMATCH! The ONLY guy Chavez has KO’d that was “decent” was Lee, but as Roach said, “Martinez is a totally different animal”. They don’t compare, Lee stood there against the ropes and allowed Chavez to tee off at will, you think Martinez will stand there and allow himself to get pinned? Um. NO! He’s gonna stick and move…Lee is a string bean who’s been stopped (almost twice) and has NO legs. Martinez will win.

Martinez is an emotional guy I have seen cry on some of his interviews, he has had the toughest road to the top of the sport that any fighter has had in the last 20 years or so, Martinez has been winning fights he was meant to lose for a decade and counting, Martinez got here on merit by beating the favorites and upsetting the fighters that the industry wanted to succeed, can chavez jr say the same thing? No and thats why Sergio will win on Saturday, Chavez jr has been matched his entire career against guys he should have beat, which doesnt prove a whole lot, Martinez on the other hand had to fight and beat a long string of guys he shouldnt have beat, chavez is here because he is his fathers son, the proverbial cash cow, Martinez is here because he is that Damn Good

Martinez was/is Jr. Middleweight champ, Middleweight champ. He can go up, I don’t think he should or would, but you never know. I think if Ward is so good then go down, why not? The Middleweight class has always been best known for great fighters/fights, Hagler, Jones, Monzon, the list goes one.
Who in Super Middle? Joe Calzaghe he is the only name that stands out beside Jones. Come on down to Middleweight Ward and lets see..

Jnw, if ward did not go up to fight Dawson, do you think he will lose 8 to go down fight Martinez. If they are to fight it would have to be a catch weight. But Martinez will not go up from 160. So I cannot see a fight happening. But best believ he cannot beat ward.

They’re both new to the attention of a super-fight so some awkwardness is expected. The better fighter will win on Saturday & the pre-fight hype won’t have anything to do with it…Sergio is clearly the better boxer & he should be the favorite but if Chavez surprises everybody & comes out jabbing, this could get real interesting; if, at any moment, Jr. is able to land the heavy combinations he has shown he’s capable of, the fight will be worth the PPV money & we might be witnessing the unexpected birth of a new super-star…

Posted September 13, 2012 2:15 pm

Martinez will never fight ward because he will lose. His promoter Said Bute, ward., froch are too big but yet he fought pavlik. Chavez is bigger than ward, froch so they are not truth telling.

This guy just said Chavez is muti-dimensional because how he looked against manfredo. That’s a pretty ridiculous statement. Chavez has horrible footwork terrible defense and only throws looping hooks. Yes he has a good chin but I have to feel Sergio’s left will be that chins biggest test. Chavez may have a punchers chance which is a stretch because you can’t hurt what you can’t hit. Maravilla will drag this kid to deep water and drown him.

Posted September 13, 2012 1:52 pm

wtf…Martinez has been looking very calm and in control in interviews….angry? full of emotion?….this author doesnt know what hes talking about….it was chavez jr. that looked insecure and unsure about what to say at those face to face conversations. i think chavez jr. is in for rude awakening; Martinez is a big step up from anyone he has ever fought.

Posted September 13, 2012 1:42 pm

deven

Sorry guys, Chavez will win this fight. Is he one dimensional, not really. Watch his fihth with manfredo. He can box but he likes to fight in the trenches. Remember Martinez is a better boxer but many times the better boxer does not win. Chavez is hungry, bigger, stronger and younger. The only top fighters Martinez fought are Margo, Williams and pavlik. Margo, we all know what happened in that fight.Williams was pretty even with Martinez and got caught in the second fight. Pavlik was weight drained by his own stupidity and was having issues at the time. So Martinez looks good but to me has not yet proven to be what he thinks he is. Let see if he can beat Chavez. If he does let him fight a top fighter. I say Chavez has the tools to beat Martinez and will.

Posted September 13, 2012 1:30 pm

The Best!

Chavez only Chance is to do a replica of Margarito vs Martinez, he must go forward with the jab to set up punches and keep his hands up all the time. the key is that you have to pressure martinez and not let him dictate the fight as he has done with every one except against Margarito. If Chavez cant do those things it will be a long night and his daddy may stop the fight for him. i still pick Martinez but you never know. I just want to see a good fight and dont really have a favorite of these two. I better not see Chavez give up even if he is getting busted up he better fight the 12 rounds.

Posted September 13, 2012 1:12 pm

Chavez is going to be destroyed, and it’s going to be ugly!! Chavez is one dimensional, can’t box, counter, slow feet, plods directly forward and has no speed. Perfect style for Martinez to destroy!

Posted September 13, 2012 1:05 pm

Anything is possible but I just can`t see Chavez Jr., beating Martinez. Junior basically has no defense and has to be the most hittable boxer in the world. He almost lost against journeyman Matt Vanda for lack of defense. As Junior presses forward at a slow pace he is going to be hit hard and often by the speed, angles and deft skill of the much faster and experienced Maravilla.
