Hidalgo you’ve just told us how Baker gave up when Martinez hit him, that’s not a good example of your original statement of how tough Barker is. Ive followed Barker since he turned pro, and you can ask any UK fan, Barker has always been regarded as a polished boxer who is highly skilled but not so tough. ask around. I always said he was the UKs best middleweight. I now believe him and Murray need to fight it out for that accolade. He was repeatedly hurt by a powder puff puncher in Geale. He showed toughness getting up from the body shot, but how hard/good was that body shot really, as specially when you consider how frequently he was hurt by Geale.

Hidalgo

“Hidalgo, Leonard is correct and thats a bad assessment of Barker.”

Junior, Martinez had Barker doing the peek-a-boo defense for much of their fight once Martinez started landing his powerful potshots. He was too fast, too slick, and too powerful for Barker. It was a game of attrition and when Barker went down, he was done. Barker had no answer for all of Martinez’s talents.

In his fight with Geale, Geale hit Barker a lot. A lot more than I expected. Barker had a hard time dealing with Geale’s high work rate and volume punching. And Geale was just more accurate than Barker. Barker is the one who finished the fight with a fairly beat up face–not Geale. And as in his fight with Martinez, Barker concentrated on Geale’s head. He didn’t mix up his punches enough.

I like to watch Darren fight, no matter what the outcome of the fight is. But Geale worked him over pretty good–for all the reasons I stated in my earlier post.

WHAT!?!

Yeah but a scorecard from Junior doesn’t mean anything. He thought Cleverly was winning against Kovalev and that it was an early, controversial stoppage. Then he tried to backtrack and say he was supporting and picked Kovalev for the win.

Junior…Leonard here..cheers for being a gent about missing Hidalgos comment!
I just think Sturm has woken up to the fact that his bare minimum …as you say ..”energy saving” …approach will no longer cut it. He can still do it if he wants to IMO. versus Radosevic earlier this year he looked well prepared and sharp again, also against Zbik last year. I know time is not on his side, but feel he might be too much for Barker….anyway, time will tell. Cheers.

Cheers for that Junior. I’ve just contacted Matchroom & there’s an announcement at the end of next week.

Off subject: Is the Froch/Groves fight actually 100%? There’s nothing scheduled on boxrec which usually have it nailed.

I think if you compare the super middleweight division and the welterweight division to the middle in recent years both have far more depth in talent.

Anonymous – Who is are the decent names on Sturms resume?

Posted August 22, 2013 5:13 pm

Happytravelling

Anon – A Sturm who lost to Macklin, Geale and debatably Murray.

I’d even argue Martinez has struggled in his most recent fights and may be on the same level as Macklin, Murray, Sturm, Barker and Geale.

Barker abandoned his usual style and took the fight to Geale. He tried to outwork a man notorious for his engine. For me, Barker won by a round or two but, as mentioned below, many of the rounds were close and I wouldn’t have called it a robbery if he had lost.

If Hearn knows what he is doing, he will get Sturm to London. Barker v Sturm in Barker’s back yard would be big money and Hearn knows there is a lot of big money fights down the line in the now, very exciting MW roundabout. So many good, close fights. A MW super 6?

boxing barlow you say:

“Sturm is a decent fighter but lets not get carried away, he it not a level above Barker. ”

Come on BB, get real willya? You can do better than that surely.
One of the premier middles of the century so far, a man with multiple world titles to his name, double digits in title fights/defences, perfector of the shell defence, world class(if not all time great) jab etc etc blah blah… and you say he is not a level above …DARREN BARKER!!!

Barker who reaches his thirties and whose only ‘claim to fame’ is that he just about got by against Flapper Geale? …getting badly bashed up and almost stopped?
If I had any mind left it would boggle!

Have a rethink about that like a good chap and get back to me.

Sturm is a decent fighter but lets not get carried away, he it not a level above Barker. He may have enough to beat Barker, just, but when comparing where he lies in the boxing world Barker, Geale, Macklin, Sturm, Murray, are all around the same level. They are decent fighters but I actually think there is a lack of depth in decent fighters in this division. GGG and Martinez are realistically the only two real good fighters in the division.

My bad junior “He’s tough as nails and has the heart of a lion, but his boxing skills are lacking.” This misassessment of Barker Should have been in quotation marks, its aquote from another poster. I was correcting HIS mistake! Agree with you obviously.
my keyboard skills are a bit like Barker and Geales boxing skills : limited! Dont worry I have seen plenty of Barker! Wouldnt comment otherwise.

My main point is about the lack of respect for Sturm on here….shameful…if he has anything at all left he should handle Barker fairly comfortably, no?

Chillin..Tarzan here….what’s not to admire about Felix? Felix shot to bits….I doubt it. Check out his last fight, or the Zbik tour de force last year. Better than anything you are ever likely to see from Barker….or Daniel “UD12″ Geale.Sturm one of the premier middleweight champions of the new millennium. Classy human being too, just gave 50k towards some kids cancer treatment. another thing ..Sturm never got beaten up bad, except perhaps by Macklin.

Hidalgo …as for your assessment of Barker: He’s tough as nails and has the heart of a lion, but his boxing skills are lacking. you haven’t seen much of Barker have you buddy?!
Underestimate Der Sturminator at yere peril, ladies. He will be remembered long after the likes or Baffling Barren Ducker and Flapper Geale are forgotten.

Yuri, it will be interesting to see if Hearn has the money and is willing to put it up to make sure this fight will happen in the UK or whether Sturms camp can force it over to Germany.

I think the strage thing with this fight for me was scoring it myself. I always score a fight in my head as I watch it, making a mental note of my scoring. And this fight highlights how diffiuclt it can be to score a fight. The problem in this fight was the rounds I scored for Barker were close. I’m talking they were backwards and forwards and until Geale relented a little and allowed Barker to nick the round. In fact I felt that in these rounds Geale gassed somewhat and gave the rounds away to Barker through lack of shots throw or taking a breather rather than Barker strongly grabbing the rounds. I might be giving Barker a little less credit than he deserves here and I know its tougher in there than it looks, but hey I still had him winning those rounds. In all I scored 7 of these rounds to Barker. Yet when Geale won rounds he won them convinsingly. There were no ‘that was close’, my mind was 100% that the round belonged to Geale. In these rounds he hurt Barker. He stunned him. In the 6th he had him out on his feet and the 12th Barker also looked on the verge of going down again. In these rounds Geale really imposed his will on Barker and gave him abeat down. These wre not nicked rounds but clear in my head. So I found it strange to get to the end of the fight and having Barker winning it by a round when Geale was never really in trouble yet I felt Barker did amazingly to survive the fight. But in the end Barker won and this is boxing. Great fight though.

Yuri

It is simple.

If Barker fights in Germany, he get lots of money, but they take his belt. We all know this.

If Barker fights in the UK. He make less money, but he stands much bigger chance to keep belt.

Belt or Money?

I would keep belt and have less money.

Mick the Marmalizer

Barker/Sturm is a virtual done deal & with Martin Murray’s help Barker ginds Sturm down even if the fights in Germany. Murray wants a crack at Barker & the way to get it is to help him out as much as possible as I can’t see Sturm wanting anything to do with him.

Turbo Hamster,

The unfortunate thing about this is Soliman is going to get screwed because the Sturm fight is worth heaps more with German TV rights. They will even have enough do-re-me to entice Barker to Germany. The IBF will not give a rats coight because the bigger fight means bigger sanctioning fee and that is all they care about.

The other major issue is, if Barker thinks that just because he is more “aggressive” (like Barbara Perez and other US judges like – apparently) and hits gloves, arms and elbows just like he did against Geale, his strap is staying in Germany. I saw Sven Ottke throw one third of the punches that Tate, Reid, Brewer (twice) and Larsen did, whilst taking alot of theirs on his high guard and winning widely in each case. Abraham is another. Maske yet another example.

Sam has no drawing power and will get left by the wayside and it is a travesty.

Posted August 22, 2013 2:35 am

Turbo-Hamster

Sturm can go shove a mint condition Boba Fett action figure still in the original wrapping up his @rse.

He gets a title and it goes straight back to Germany while his promoter looks for corpses like Karmazin to defend against.

Besides which he lost to Soliman and Solimans B-sample – when tested by Quest in the US showed clean, and the Germans aren`t testing their B sample.

That situation hasn`t been satisfactorily resolved and your going to end up with a messy legal case if Sturm gets a shot ahead of Soliman.

Until the rematch….it was def in barkers favour having a little more exsposure in the U.S. I belief 2 take a belt off some1 u need 2 clearly do so…throwing more punchers, hitting a guy less, getting dropped and cut open isn’t clearly taking a strap off some1. Judges won’t b needed in a rematch.

Love it. The banter/comments/rhetoric/abuse back and forth about this fight. It’s great for the sport. The author, Chip thinks Geale won it as do many people, myself included. I have not an ounce of issue with Barker getting the nod because it was so close and indeed not a robbery. The rematch is a must now. O2 Arena I say.

Leonard, you are deadset Tarzan, the way you are swinging off Sturms nuts. You are in the absolute minority of persons who think Sturm beat Geale. Sturm is shot to bits. He was never the same after he got beat up bad by Javier.

” Lets not overestimate what happened: Barker beat Geale….more of a medium sized deal than a big deal… two decent guys in an entertaining scrap…that’s all. No seismic shift in the middleweight division there! ”

Every boxer can’t be a super star. But, it was a championship fight and a good one at that. Personally, I wonder if Barker could beat Sturm. Barker is too slow, too open, and has terrible defense. He’s not hard to counter or to figure out. Barker also tends to be a headhunter and IMO that’s his greatest weakness. He’s tough as nails and has the heart of a lion, but his boxing skills are lacking.

Still, trying to justify Sturm’s loss to Geale as being the result of being “unprepared” doesn’t cut it. Geale deserves more credit than that. A boxer is what he is what he is on fight night. Geale comes ready to win every time he steps into the ring. Geale had a better connect rate than Barker. He out-jabbed Barker. He dropped Barker with a wilting body shot and had Barker hurt more than once. Even though they both had a 42% power punch connect rate, Geale seemed to land the more powerful, effective punches, and he landed those types of punches more often. He was also much less marked at the end of the fight. Geale isn’t quite the “flapper” that you think he is. He’s fairly accurate and means business with his power punches. I was actually impressed with the performance Geale put on against Barker. However, Geale is not a great closer. He should have finished off Barker after he dropped him with that body shot–Barker was there for the taking.

LikeISeeIt

The fight was somewhat close, but Barker did more than enough to win. Geale is very awkward but is not a big puncher. Also, I thought Barker just landed bigger shots than Geale. Geale fought hard, but it wasn’t his night.

It was a decent fight. One score card was way off. 2 were right on. Either guy getting a call or a draw would of been the right call

Barkers domestic opposition is top World class, Murray, Macklin, he will beat Sturm, I don’t think he can beat Golovkin, any other Champions he can beat.

…but are we getting a bit ahead of ourselves here? We need to steady on and keep a sense of proportion. Lets not overestimate what happened: Barker beat Geale….more of a medium sized deal than a big deal… two decent guys in an entertaining scrap…that’s all. No seismic shift in the middleweight division there! Have people considered the possibility that Barker is unlikely to be champ for long? I have. The world is not his oyster. I would not be certain of him even beating his domestic opposition. He will likely face Sturm next. Reports of Sturms demise are greatly exaggerated. I don’t believe Sturm is finished at all. A fit, motivated Sturm, even at 34, like the Sturm of his last fight this year or the Zbik fight in 2012, for example likely beats Darren all day. There is a big difference between coping with the sloppy disorganised flapping of Geale and the precision punching of a well prepared Sturm. And this is the Sturm we will be seeing from now on. At his age Sturn now realises that he can no longer show up smug, lazy and underprepared like against Geale, Soliman etc. and do the bare minimum to escape with a win. A lean, mean Sturm should get past the likes of Barker and Geale. I know a pro Sturm view is not exactly flavour of the month on here…so queue the expected torrent of abuse :)

Barkers face was all beat up and he went down to a body punch. Geale had sore arms from the wild winging punches that actually connected. The judges need a re-education on scoring. Geale won and he will win again in a rematch.
