Hard to tell what this really means to Mares as it was a very early, very brutal stoppage. The guy is young & wasn’t outclassed for 12 rounds or took a prolonged beating. He could have just been caught cold. You can’t discount a guy because of losses. This can happen when fighters don’t constantly fight hand picked opponents. Beristan doesn’t get enough credit IMO. The man is arguably the best trainer in the sport & has been a top pro trainer for 3 decades.Posted August 26, 2013 4:21 pm
I too like the new and improved Tark. His honest and frank assessment of how his rigorous training methods assist all those sweaty boxers stance are quite disturbing yet informative. I personally don’t condone any such methods yet the new Tarktalk is insightful and informative.Posted August 26, 2013 8:31 am

Personally I prefer the new out of the closet TARK.
The old TARK was an intractable buffoon who made inaccurate and arbitrary observations of no value, and who basically acted like an obtuse primary school child.
He was most disagreeable, and simply will not accept the fact that someone else might have something of value to add.
This individual suffers from really quite deep seated delusions, and repeats the word “Stance” like some Romanian peasant woman hoping it will ward off the evil spirits who keep startling her goats.
He makes wild claims about how he predicted the results of all kind of fights, yet he won`t write one challenge article with Herron.
He is in short an industrial strength Bull$h1t merchant.Posted August 26, 2013 5:53 am

Alot of these boxer/brawlers are just brawlers with some more technical skills… They look like ring generals when compared with good chined sluggers such as Margarito, Angulo, Matheysse. Mares and Santa Cruz are boxer/punchers but not as skilled as a Marquez or Garcia. They have a long way to go. I definatly see Mares getting stopped by Nonaire and Rigo… Santa Cruz will also get stopped at some point as well… Garcia on the other hand reminds me of a young Marquez…Posted August 25, 2013 9:53 pm

Mares maybe underestimated that his ex-sparring partner & his ex-trainer knew him like a book. Plus Mares is very used to taking a punch to land 3,even against power punchers like Darchinyan.I guess he didn’t feel Gonzlez full power when they sparred.Posted August 25, 2013 7:19 pm
Gonzalez was quick but sneaky too. When Gonzales dropped his left such as to throw a body shot, Mares dropped his right elbow to block the body shot,as he’s done many times before. Then watch Gonzalez left do a little loop upwards before throwing that hook to the head. Then he walks away like it was all expected, while Mares is rolling on the canvas. It looked like magic to me until I saw the slow motion replay!Posted August 25, 2013 7:17 pm

not surprised that Jhonny could win but Shocked in the manner with which he did it. Gonzalez has always been a snakebit favorite of mine and this was his last chance to finally win the biggest bout of his career. he delivered with Mares’ help, which was inexplicable since any scouting report on Gonzalez would mention is legit hitting power. anyway, looks like Ponce will be insinuated back into the picture by association(?). i’d like to watch a Mares v. Donaire, Ponce v. Lopez II, and Gonzalez v. Santa Cruz fight-card next. that would provide crystal clarity to the featherweight scene. depending on how it shakes out, Rigondeaux and Mikey Garcia can take their pick among the winners of these matchups or each other. featherweight is about to blow-up with explosive matchups.Posted August 25, 2013 5:25 pm

The ref could of simply let Mares stand up, checked to see if he was ok when he got to 8 and if he couldn’t answer yes or was unable to walk forward then stop the fight. Stopping the fight at 3 or 4 when he was attempting to get up is just way too soon. Not like he wasn’t moving or he was twitching. He was attempting to stand.Posted August 25, 2013 12:02 pm
BUSTAJAY I guess the fake TARK is Gonzo…Posted August 25, 2013 11:51 am
Mares was stopped because he fought a stupid fight. He ia Battamweighit fighting a featherweight , Gonzalez is a very big puncher, Mares should have boxed cautiously for a few rounds to get his rhythm. Mares got KO’d because he was overconfident and he gave a fighter with only a punchers chance , a chance.Posted August 25, 2013 11:35 am
It’s hard to fault the ref for stopping the fight. Part of his job is to protect the fighters and Mares needed protecting he was seriously hurt and the only way he was going to try and weather the storm was by trading punches. Mares should thank the ref for a job well done.Posted August 25, 2013 11:34 am
BTW, great win by Santa Cruz too, but that boy does blatantly use his forearms and elbows–especially his left!Posted August 25, 2013 11:29 am
I also want to point out again because this just doesn’t happen enough. Mares just like Trout was very gracious in defeat. Both felt that what happened shouldn’t of happened but they did not complain, they let the fighter have there moment. Very classy of both. My girl felt bad for Mares, she doesn’t watch boxing, only the 2nd fight she has ever watched with me. But had to tell her, well there has to be a winner and a loser unless there is a draw. lolPosted August 25, 2013 11:28 am
Well, Gonz, that’s what 60+ fight experience can do for ya. Mares learned something last night: He’s predictable.Posted August 25, 2013 11:26 am
Peej, I also thought the ref was hasty with the stoppage. The round was almost over. Reiss should have finished the count. Then Mares would have had a full minute to recover–if Reiss didn’t stop the fight anyways. And no sooner than Reiss waved off the fight, Mares told him he was okay–you could read his lips when he said that.
But by Golly, Gonzalez clocked him good. That first left hook he nailed Mares with was one of the best timed, best thrown hooks I’ve ever seen. Gonzalez touched Mares chest with his left jab, then when Abner dropped his right hand to around shoulder height, BANG! and Mares went down. I’ve never seen Mares look so bewildered: “WTF just happened”Posted August 25, 2013 11:24 am
Gonzo the Dragonborn
Sweet left hook by Gonzalez though. Mares was still badly dazed and fighting on pure instinct after that, I think he might have got knocked cold if the ref had allowed it to continue. Either that or he would’ve hit the canvas again a second or two later.Posted August 25, 2013 11:20 am

Good win for Gonzalez. He’s always had good offense and has lined himself up for big fights/paydays. As for Mares, he can bounce back. He’s still young and is a tough S.O.B. I didn’t see the fight, only saw the highlights on ESPN. While I generally like the way the kid fights & handles himself, I chuckled at the result because De la Fishnets and Schaeffer were talking earlier in the week about Mares being the #2 P4P fighter in the sport. I thought to myself “No way.”Posted August 25, 2013 10:07 am
Man people so jelous of Mares. The man got caught, he is not a hype job, he is a damn good fighter. I picked Mares by late round KO, didn’t make it out of the first. Mares resume speaks for itself. Not full of has beens, about to retire, or smaller fighters like Donaires resume is. There is gonna be a rematch I am sure and I will still pick Mares again. The ref stopped this fight too soon. Though I still think Gonzalez was going to win by KO since Mares was not trying to clinch. Good win for Gonzalez.Posted August 25, 2013 9:13 am
There was no ref to protect Mares in this bout like there was in his disgraceful performance against Joseph Agbeko. Justice isn’t always swift, but it’s still out there.Posted August 25, 2013 8:05 am

Absolutely hilarious. Mares had this coming for a while. He has lost 2 or 3 bouts in which he was given generous scorecards. Well, you can’t beat scorecards when you get KOéd. Justice has been served. It has been served late but at least served with humiliation. Screw you Mares.Posted August 25, 2013 5:46 am
He didn’t suffer much damage. The fight lasted, less than three minutes, and that’s good for him. He’ll be back stronger and better. By the way, despite not being in his prime, I noticed that Jhonny, had the look of a fresh fighter. Even the light beard he had, gave me the impression that he was not in that fight, only for a payday. I think Nacho is a great trainer and is perfectly suited to his style. Both fighters are humble and great warriors, and in the case of Abner, he should not seek for a rematch right away: still young, and it is good for him to recover first from this fight. It’s a shame that his boxing trainer is not Nacho, based on his fighting style, he would come in handy, specially with defense and how to counter better.Posted August 25, 2013 5:29 am
I thought the stoppage was quick Mares was already getting right up at 3 seconds. He would have got up an round over. Maybe it ends early next round or Mares wakes up.for a great comeback, thats boxing.Posted August 25, 2013 5:20 am

Well Mares got exposed for his lack of world class defence. He should stay away from Rigo and Donaire for the time being and get a defence guru so he could be a complete package, one that can attack, defend and counter instinctively.Posted August 25, 2013 3:35 am
what a ROBBERY… what an injustice … I’m outraged… Abner was not even given the opportunity to throw any nut-shots in this fight… they way Gonzales was hitting Abner when he was clearly defenseless was not a gentlemanly thing to do… they should rule this fight a no contest ASAP and have them fight again with me as a ref… I will make sure all the right rules get enforced and obliterate the foul taste this travesty left in the mouth of any rules abiding and fair boxing fanPosted August 25, 2013 2:57 am

Idiot Ernie always posting as me… You know which one.Posted August 25, 2013 2:31 am
Very classy, Big Al!!
I don’t think anyone could help but be a Jhonny Gonzalez fan tonight.
I loved it…I really like Abner and he’s a good kid. He’s mature beyond his years and is the future of the sport.
But, that’s what happens when you compete at the world class level for an extended period of time…you eventually lose.
Going back to the Russell Mora ordeal; I actually spoke with Russell about this and he has seen the fight tape and admits that he really screwed up. He accepts all of the blame and criticism that he received after the fight.
He’s usually a great ref…I have no idea what happened that night.
Anyway, thanks for keeping it classy, brother!!Posted August 25, 2013 2:23 am
Freakin’ great… Good for Gonzalez… Instead of getting trounced for the 9th time — he takes Mares’s cherry-picking and turns it on it’s head.. What would be great is doing the same thing in a rematch.
I love it when an “opponent” wins.
When Douglas kicked Tyson’s ass I laughed my ass off through the whole damned fight.. I practically jumped through the ceiling when Rahman connected on Lewis.. That was too much because Rahman wasn’t a big banger.
Although I knew Rahman wasn’t going to be champion long … Lewis hated him, and Rahman really couldn’t fight that well.Posted August 25, 2013 2:18 am
Joseph, no problem. we can have a spirited debate any time. I agree part of the blame lies with Russell Mora. And do you know what is more shocking: that Mora disqualified Anthony Peterson for low blows against Brandon Rios not long before Mares-Agbeko. He knows good and well what a low blow looks like, and so it leads me to believe that either he had some nefarious reason for turning a blind eye to those fouls or is really just incompetent — both serious enough to keep him away from championship-level officiating. But as I’ve explained, Mares shares some of that blame because if I, who boxed from age 10 thru 16, would know if my punches ran afoul, Mares, being a professional, knows if his punches a low. Plus he has a history of them with the Darchinyan fight, and thus my feeling that this KO rights a wrong. I’m not anti-Mares, he’s very exciting, but I was a Gonzalez fan tonight.Posted August 25, 2013 1:57 am

Not trying to pick a fight with you, brother…just a discussion.
But, this one is on Russell Mora…not Abner Mares. Ask yourself, why would Abner risk getting DQ’d in the biggest fight of his career up to that point?
Mora really screwed that fight up royally. That’s why the IBF ordered a mandatory rematch and didn’t strip Mares of his title. They knew it was the fault of the third man in charge and the nevada state athletic commission.
All Mora has to do is take charge of that bout, and Mares makes more of a conscious effort to raise his hands…but without a warning or penalty, Mares probably didn’t think anything of it.Posted August 25, 2013 1:37 am
are you kidding me,mares probably would have made it out of the round? he was knocked out from the first left that put him down,he didn’t know where he was.it was being young and in great shape that enabled him to even get up and move on reflex. that ref did the right thing.hell,he probably should have stopped it after the 1st knock down. i like both fighters and had abner in the p4p top 10.he just got caught. jhonny has power, but no one expected this in 1 round including me.Posted August 25, 2013 1:35 am

Herron. I think you mean well, and you’re trying to be reasonable, but you’ve just taken up an unreasonable argument. Do I think he intetionally threw all of those low blows that Al Bernstein counted for us on air? Maybe not every single one, no, but do I think he knew he was landing them with high frequency? Absolutely! Do I think he has done that in past fights? Just re-watch the Darchinyan fight? Do I think he knows what can happen if an errant punch lands south of the border? You bet, just watch him explain the effects on some science show you can find on youtube, the one where he punches a dummy outfitted with a measuring device in the groin area.Posted August 25, 2013 1:16 am

But, Big Al,
That really was the fault of referee Russell Mora, and not so much Abner Mares.
Do you really think that Abner Mares was intentionally trying to check Agbeko’s cup that often in a championship bout?Posted August 25, 2013 1:02 am
Puglsy – I’m not trying to piss on the kid while he’s down just because. But perhaps I should explain my position a little better. This KO rights a wrong that happened when Mares fouled his way to a win and cheated Agbeko out of the championship and the glory of being the winner of the bantamweight tournament. I would rather that Agbeko landed that whistling left hook tonight, but somehow it makes me feel better that right gets put right in the strange manner that these things happen. And for the record, I’ll keep watching Mares because he’s in exciting fights. I admit.Posted August 25, 2013 12:53 am

Mares is an excellent fighter who got beat by another excellent fighter tonight, with superior power. That happens when you fight the best. And Mares lost with class. I don’t see the point of pissing on him when he’s down and I also think it shows a lack of knowledge of the game to get caught up in the significance of undefeated records. I mean, Roberto Duran got smoked by Tommy Hearns but that hardly defines Roberto Duran’s career, right? Give Mares a chance to come back and just enjoy Gonzalez’s return to prominence. No need to talk smack when you’re discussing guys who are both worthy champions.Posted August 25, 2013 12:10 am
I has Darch winning against Mares …..Posted August 25, 2013 12:08 am
Looking forward too cheese head VS Junior …………Posted August 25, 2013 12:07 am
Puglsy, you’re right about Mares taking on some of the best and being undefeated, but it was only on paper. Those of us who actually saw all of those fights knew that he drew with Yhonny Perez, probably squeaked by Darchinyan (some think it should’ve been a draw) and absolutely should have lost the first Agbeko fight. His luck, yes LUCK, was bound to run out some time.
Man, I love this sport!!!Posted August 25, 2013 12:07 am
MARES NO MAS FOR DONAIRE!!!!! BRING IT ON DONAIRE VS GONZALES… ITS GONNA BE A WAR!!!Posted August 25, 2013 12:05 am
Seriously, dude. What are you, the fashion police? STFU if you can’t actually talk boxing. Santa Cruz was impressive tonight against a guy that was supposed to give him trouble. Wonder who they’re gonna match him up with next? He looked like a steamroller in there…Posted August 25, 2013 12:04 am
Public Enemy: You, sir, a an idiot. Or perhaps just a casual fan. Mares has run a gauntlet of some of the best fighters in the lower weight divisions and was undefeated against them. To call him a hype job is utterly moronic. He got caught by an excellent left hook from a powerful puncher and experienced vet. He’ll be back and he’ll be fine. And I’m happy for Gonzalez, too. Hope he gets a few more big paydays before he retires and he’s always dangerous because of the power, as he proved again tonight.Posted August 25, 2013 12:01 am
The theater of the unexpected!! I love it!!Posted August 25, 2013 12:01 am
Of course he knocked him out in the first, I said that but didn’t actually type it, I had a large one in my mouth at the time…Posted August 24, 2013 11:59 pm
Mares relied on his resume and his movement and his right hand, the right hook to the head is the last thing you wanna do cuz you know that left hook is coming, most devestating punch in boxing Mares believed the hype and paid for it!Posted August 24, 2013 11:54 pm
Mares still has a much better resume than DonairePosted August 24, 2013 11:53 pm
Gonzalez was smart. He jumped on Mares from the opening bell and didn’t let Mares get comfortable and wink at the Ref.Posted August 24, 2013 11:51 pm
GONZO OF NAZARETH
Mares looked like a little child next to Gonzalez, the size difference was crazy.Posted August 24, 2013 11:49 pm
Well I guess it’s safe to say that Abner Mares more than likely won’t want to appear on “The Pugilist KOrner’ as originally scheduled.
Wow!!Posted August 24, 2013 11:48 pm
He should take up knitting now.Posted August 24, 2013 11:47 pm

I would like to publicly call KORNERMAN and GHOST out for saying that Mares was a future ATG.Posted August 24, 2013 11:46 pm
He had a good run, but boxing is not for him.Posted August 24, 2013 11:45 pm

He got favored with the low blow fight yeah he got favored in that fight but this was still an early stoppage. And there was only 5 seconds left meaning the round was over if he got up. Terrible stoppage.Posted August 24, 2013 11:35 pm
Great upset win by Gonzalez.Posted August 24, 2013 11:34 pm
Mares has been getting favors by the Ref’s nearly his whole career– fouling with rabbit punches and low blows to build his record. Now when he gets KO’d the refs give a possible early stoppage? Laugh Out Loud.Posted August 24, 2013 11:33 pm
nice left…made it look so easyPosted August 24, 2013 11:32 pm
