If your sparring partners can’t hang you round up new ones who CAN hang. In a fight like this you empty the bank to get the right sparring. If you have to move Heaven and Earth you do it.

You win a fight like this and you’re automatically worth another 100 million. You’ve made your mark on Fistic History in a massive way.

So, to Hell with being relaxed about not having appropriate sparring.

I think it’s more the injuries the fighters have picked up and the way the sparring partners are talking about the sessions that gives some insight.
Let’s be honest who is canelo meant to spar that comes close to mayweather? he’s gone light with partners to deal with speed.
The injuries the sparring partners have picked up show the tactics, he’s dislocated shoulders of those sharing the ring with him…that takes out the shoulder roll and has honed his uppercut, a punch that pbf will be open to, it’s the punch that rj jnr suggested should be used more to deal with the style along with the jab that Oscar showed. He’s hitting on the arms rather than head hunting and that could tire mayweather and have an impact on how he defends and responds.
As long as canelo is fit to fight with no weight problems then he’s on the right path, pbf has fought the better opponents, he’s on top of his game but canelo is hungry and thinking ahead, I hope he keeps cool in the ring and gives a good go of it, less than 2 weeks and I’m looking forward to this fight and the matthyse/Garcia fight

Really?? This guy writes, or atleast attempts to write, about Canelo bragging?? Damn, Floyds middle name IS “bragging” more like arrogant. Can’t see why ESB allows this idiot to post this garbage

He’s not in trouble… He just needs his klunk-headed managers and trainers to get him some good sparring.

You need a team. You can’t do it by yourself.

Posted September 3, 2013 10:47 am

TARK

It’s not a matter of who can imitate Floyd… You need good fast orthodox boxers who can keep up with somebody as good as Canelo without having to call TIME every 30 seconds. You need real good all around skills and defense. You need tough continuous action for a couple of full 3 minute rounds before you have to change sparring partners … or Canelo isn’t going to be ready.

You get guys like Kell Brook.. Keith Thurman.. Jessie Vargas.. Shawn Porter.. Maybe even Willie Nelson or John Jackson might be able to work a round or 2.

Nobody is going to box exactly like either Floyd or Canelo anyway… You don’t need that.. You just need to be ready to fight the world’s best boxer and beat him convincingly.. You need to give guys lots of money who qualify to go 2 or 3 rounds of great work.

You’re not trying to hurt them, but if they can’t hang you have to send them home.. What a waste of time that is.. For this fight you go get the best sparring out there.

You have to get fabulous sparring partners for a fight of this magnitude. There’s a ton of money for training expenses.

I’s insane that Canelo is able to beat his sparring partners up and send them home… They don’t belong in camp.

Sparring is the last thing you cut back on if you have no money left. Exactly why he doesn’t have great sparring is because he didn’t have good experienced trainers, selecting the best and toughest guys, and offering them the most money. You have to do that for a fight like this.

Posted September 2, 2013 3:49 pm

Totally agree TARK…

I can only think he has been misquoted. Canelo showed me some Floyd defensive moves in is out with Trout, therefore I think he means he has mastered the style he believes is necessary to defeat Floyd.

Otherwise he is in for a rude awakening!

I can’t see any one sparring partner who can imitate Floyd…. Closest match I feel could be Terrence Crawford….Canelo would need 3 sparring partners, each who can imitate once facet of Floyd….FOOTWORK, UPPERBODY MOVEMENT VARIOUS DEFENCE MOVES incl. his shoulder roll and COUNTERPUNCHES/ LEAD RIGHTS…

As you have stated many times, he would have to do many hours, first at quarter pace, then walking pace, then half pace practiced feints, leads, fakes and counters to whatever they feel Floyd will do with his sparring partners and then bring it together ala Floyd does with his pad work exhibitions to the point (and I’ve seen it first-hnd) where he will be able to produce move-counter-move, with his eyes shut!

Will be very interesting to see, how he has come on in this training camp.

IMHO, I think barring freak injuries or cuts he winner will be he man with the STRONGER MIND and possesses the stronger WILL TO WIN…. who is prepared to walk through Hell and High Water to win this bout!

The clock is ticking! TICK TOCK!!!!!!

“What Canelo should do is forget about sparring and get a treadmill and work on his poor conditioning.” – From this author’s prior story on Canelo’s camp. WTF? That throws his credibility in the trash.

“THE POINT OF SPARRING IS NOT TO DOMINATE your sparring partners per se, but to try out new moves, techniques and fight plans. Anyone who goes in with a sparring partner with the only intention to knock their heads off their shoulders is borderline insane.” – TJ is correct. Some fighters like G Foreman were notorious for his sadism in camp. We saw how he got schooled by Ali, because he never worked on the subtle skills needed in a real boxing match. You want to get the best of your opponents in sparring, but you don’t want to demolish them.

pretty sure his trainers know what they’re doing, heavy handed fighters have a hard time getting good fighters in their weight class to spar with….

Love-The-Sport, interesting post, which could be a reality. The powers that be hire those judges, and in the end, they make the final decision. A draw, if the fight is truly competitive, will set up a Mega Fight worth Millions. Remember, this is boxing and anything can happen.

Posted September 2, 2013 2:15 pm

Love-the-Sport

This is all talk and irrelevant. My predictions are as follows:

(1) The fight will be closer than anybody would ever expect
(2) Alvarez will show more speed and boxing skill than anybody would ever expect
(3) Alvarez will connect with Floyd and get him in trouble
(4) Floyd will show tremendous chin, guts, and strength

Fight will end in a tie.

This would be a thrilling and dramatic event and set the stage for an UNBELIEVABLY HUGE rematch.

If the first fight goes along the lines of (1)(2)(3)(4) … then we could be looking at 5 MILLION BUYS in the rematch.

It would be bigger than the Super Bowl. Great for boxing.

“So, It’s OK for Floyd to humiliate his sparring partners on all access?? ” Get in line and take your ass beating” He tells them, talks to them like low class bums.” – Rapid, any word on who Floyd’s sparring partners are ie. are they “no-names” like the author says about Canelo’s? Either way it’s a disrespectful way to talk to your sparring partners. Nobody should put up with that.

Posted September 2, 2013 1:54 pm

Fight Aficionado

Sometimes a fighters camp manager chooses weaker sparring partners so his guy can gain confidence rather than technical skills. It sounds like that’s what may be happening in Canelo’s camp. If so that’s a bad sign.

Canelo has been sparring nothing but amatures n begining pros …no recognized names so yes he’s been dominating them. Roberto Garcia asked to spar him but was turned down now his in Chavez It’s camp helping him spar for his up coming fight against Vera

THE POINT OF SPARRING IS NOT TO DOMINATE your sparring partners per se, but to try out new moves, techniques and fight plans.

Anyone who goes in with a sparring partner with the only intention to knock their heads off their shoulders is borderline insane and really needs to get with the program.

Sparring tunes up the fighters for the real competition ahead and unless you are facing a similar ELITE level sparring partner of course you would be favoured to get the better of most of your sparring partners.

CARL FROCH is a guy I like and who seems to understand what a sparring partner is for… He has for the last several years along with trainer McCracken use the England amateur boxing internationals along with guys like Callum Smith to hone his skills – These are young, hungry men with lots of potential who may edge him in terms of speed, height, defence or whatever… but, they get him to his goal, to be ready for fight night!!!!!

The whole point of sparring is to test yourself against what you will be facing when it comes down to fight night and not to bash seven lumps of hell out of each other like we saw AMIR KHAN doing before he got chinned by DANNY GARCIA…

There should always be a purpose for a spar…. It can be a technical spar – where you go over certain elements of defence/ offence, it could be a spar to get ready for fight-night conditions or a spar with several sparring partners to make sure you can do the 12 rounds at a good pace… BUT, in all my time especially with what we have gotten to know about concussion syndrome and pugilistic dementia etc… a spar must have a purpose and not be a tear-up like we saw back in the days in the old Kronk Gym etc…

That only shortens careers and anyone knocked down or worse, knocked out in sparring should be monitored very closely for any complications!

A sparring session should be one of the most educational things you do or get out of a boxing session and gives you a chance to improve on what you are doing wrong or fine tune fight strategies…..

I see Good

I see you have that hate for Mayweather, I don’t think you expect Canelo to win as much as you would like to see Mayweather lose. Like I’ve been saying it could happen but I’m going with Mayweather on this one. Just so that you will understand I mentioned the up jab because it was one of the tool that Cotto has as well that works against the shoulder roll. You throw it inside the shoulder and Mayweather will roll the punch into his own face. It was one of the points I made before the Cotto fight and I was told on this site that that would not work. Well everyone that said it would not work witnessed it working. I still think that the 2 pounds of extra weight lose will hurt Canelo, I will be suprise if it doesn’t. I think at that point the fight will go like this Potshot, Potshot, Miss, Miss, Miss, Potshot, Miss, Miss, Miss, Miss. If it looks anything like this it will be a very long night for Canelo.

Posted September 2, 2013 2:50 am

I see Good

Urone2 NOBODY KNOWS what CANELO will do, meaning WHAT STYLE. Not even CHERRYPICKER himself. Thats WHY its up in the AIR. Canelo definately FOOL Trout and every body else INCLUDING myself. But what ever STYLE he choses CANELO always has his POWER. that will NEVER change. In all of CHERRYPICKERS past hand pick fights, theres NO question here, This is going to be a FIGHT. If that pop shot type of STYLE cherrypicker RELIES on it WONT WORK… It didnt WORK for TROUT. And if CHERRYPICKER makes a dog fight out of it, HE WILL GET KNOCK OUT. Canelo is TO DANGEROUS to go TOE TO TOE.. And Canelo has SKILLS and is NOT OLD, past his PRIME either. the ODDS in my opinion are NOT in cherrypickers FAVOR like ALL his PAST FIGHTS

First weight is a disadvantage for Canelo then weight is his only advantage. OK; make your dumb mind and tell us something new.

How much you guys wanna bet that Floyd Mayweather makes his sparring partners take PED tests before being allowed to get in the ring with him?

Posted September 1, 2013 11:23 pm

Canelo has a nice little up Jab that could work to his favor against Mayweather, the question is will he use it. Canelo has good skill but I still don’t think hes ready for Mayweather, De La Hoya said it earlier this year and I still think it is true.

To the writer, why would Canelo spar with bigger heavier sparring partners when he preparing to fight a smaller faster Mayweather. If the sparring partners can’t keep up, i’m sure he’s hoping for a simular situation with Mayweather. I can understand the point that Canelo is making if 5 sparring partners are having trouble taking the punishment then Mayweather will also. I don’t really think Mayweather will but you never know this is boxing, where every fighter is one shot away from a bed time story.

hell I bet canelo out weight them too by 20 – 30 lb like he has his last 10 figfhts the only one on his rec worth something was trout and it was a fight

What a bunch of morons I see here, Canelo couldn´t even stop the medicore Matthew hatton in his “championship” fight, what makes u believe that he can stop Money?? Only imebeciles who believe all the hype about him are the ones who believe so.

Maybe he should get better sparring partners like Tyson did with Oliver McCall. McCall could freeze in big fights in front of a crowd but in the Gym, according to the Pros that fought him in sparring, the guy was as good and tough as they come.

Up your game Canelo. You are to damn young and to good to be beating the crap out of inferior fighters in a gym.

He’s not bragging. Sparring partners are there to earn their pay and sometimes they taking beatings. Floyd and Canelo don’t go easy on them. I’m sure Floyd gives out many beatings. The writer just trying to stir it up.

cant wait for the 14th. finally, a good fighter gonna smoke floyd in every phase of the game. the power and the combinations spell the end. canelo has a very good chance of winning this by stoppage. I think canelo will be able to pour it on thick for all 12 rounds if need be with no stamina issues = floyd gets smoked set up the rematch. say hello to the new cash cow. HIS NAME IS CANELO!!!!

It’s all hype. I remember how Pac and Roach were bragging about Pac’s sparring partner not being able to knock him down. That convinced them that no way Marquez could knock Pacquiao out, but looked what happened.

There’s a huge difference between sparring against someone who’s is there to get hit and don’t want to “hurt” your chances of canceling your fight due to an injury, than fighting an opponent who not just want to win, but wants to hurt you badly if possible.

@KidBlast The Canelo-Mayweather PPV is on TWC’s PPV website for upcoming events. I was told by a customer rep that we should be able to purchase it on Sept. 14th despite the fact that it’s technically a SHOPPV and we don’t have the standard SHO channels.

hmm..so Golden Boy cant get their newest golden boy any competitive sparring partners? How much did they weigh again or dont you actually know?

Could it be that they are no more interested in seeing Canelo win as they were Marquez. Maybe keeping Floyd undefeated is more lucrative

This over-the-top hype is starting to become puke provoking. What next, Canelo intends to wear red shorts? Let’s just look at the strengths and weaknesses of both fighters and make our predictions.

Every time one of these two belches, an article pops up. Enough. It’s being over-hyped and I’m still not sure we will be able to get it on PPV because of the TWC debacle.

This is becoming a turnoff. Good think Garcia’ and the Argentine will be on. If Angel can be shut up, that will be good for boxing IMO.
