Although Scotland eventually became united with England in 1603 under James I, and the Act of Union in 1707 sealed Great Britain as an entity. There were Scottish rebellions, but they were put down, and many rebels deported, hence the large amount of Scottish Blood in Canada and Jamaica.

Burns took rounds 1 and 2, then got a BADLY broken jaw in the 3rd and fought on with a severe injury. Yup, he is lucky to have kept his belt, but the guy was competing with a severe injury. I remember Vitali pulling out with an injury, Burns didnt, he kept going. And the Mexican has himself to blame, he stood off a badly injured Burns too much, and let Burns steal enough rounds to get lucky with the judges, none of whom were Scottish. Without that injury, I reckon Burns wouldve outboxed Beltran, and i’m sure he beats him in a rematch.

I think this fight and Burns last fight has shown he was extremely protected, guided and matched by Frank Warren… in both his last fights he has been shown to be wanting… He’s a brave man but he’s ripe for the tacking under Hearn… Hearn thought he’s got hold of the real deal…. but his last two fights have shown Burns will not be world champion for long… He should make Hay while the sun is shining on him… cos it will not be for long!!

Mention of a metal plate inserted in the jaw reminds me of French flyweight champion Eugene Criqui, who got shot in the face by a German sniper during WWI. He came back & won the featherweight championship of the World, but unfortunally remained a rather perculiar looking chap until his death.

If it was a street fight then Beltran still won, he broke the other guys jaw ffs, if that was on the street the fight would have been over there and then,Rickster was just tough enough to grit it out luckily for him.

Turb0-H@mster

Beltran should have spoken to King Edward I. He would have told him that you can smash the Scots from pillar to post, but ye’ll never get the decision up there. You can`t beat a Scotsman in Scotland, and you can`t beat a Scotsman anywhere if he has just drunk a Tennants Super T.

IT’S NOW TIME TO FOCUS our attention on these judges who are basically on the gravy train judging bouts around the world with no comebacks to their appalling scoring of fights, week in week out.

Where is the accountability for bad or should I say terrible scoring of bouts?

This coming weekend we have the WHOLE WORLD watching boxing’s showcase event: MAYWEATHER vs ALVAREZ backed up by MATTHYSSE and GARCIA.

Stanley Christodoulou was an exemplary boxing ref when I was growing up, but as a judge he scored the ALVAREZ vs TROUT bout 118-109 in favour of Canelo in a close bout!

How on earth did he score this contest in this way and most likely he will be given a pat on the back and more lucrative assignments in future!!!!!

People are raving about, arguing about, salivating about this boxing’s great match-up, but if this goes to points we are dealing in the ultimate subjective debate of Mayweather’s defence and counter punching vs CANELO’S aggression and more likely bigger punches.

Who will be tasked with judging this and what are their credentials to be charged with such a massive and important task???

The biggest bout in boxing could be marred by terrible judging……

Let’s hope this is not the case!

MATTHYSSE has been on the wrong end of two disputed points losses to ZAB and DEVON and now tries to KO his opponents and make the judges redundant….

BELTRAN from the Wildcard was robbed by judges after besting RICKY BURNS over 12….

WBO President has said that CRAWFORD is next, but has made no promises on BELTRAN getting first dibs from the winner!!!!!

If Ricky has to take time out to recover, what I see is CRAWFORD taking on BELTRAN and probably he will lose, when he should have been next in the ring as a defending World Champion.

Sad to say, I think that RICKY BURNS’ days at the top are numbered and he should have cashed out vs ADRIEN BRONER when the chance!

Posted September 8, 2013 5:46 pm

Ricky’s got a broken jaw, not dislocated, titanium plate inserted.

Posted September 8, 2013 4:38 pm

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Michael Collins…a complete robbery! Hopefully Eddie Hearn’s talk of a career threatening injury to RB’s jaw is a smokescreen to avoid his mandatory and give Beltran a deserved rematch…hopefully!!

You’ll note tbone, that Ricky Burns had an indifferent face when the 115 – 112 score was announced. When Beltran got his 115 – 113 nod Burns gave a look of ‘yeah, that’s more like it’. That in itself is accepting defeat. Handing over a belt? It’s a tough one but i’d like to see it one day in a boxing ring where the scoring is a bit of a joke.

Posted September 8, 2013 1:17 pm

if they are really honest folk up scotland then hand the belt over.. send to beltran to mexico

Watching the fight again,, it was close
Burns definitely took round 1 and 2 and also
11 and 12 there was a couple of the mid rounds that could
Have gone either way, me personally would have give the fight to Beltran
But it was a close fight

Posted September 8, 2013 12:53 pm

PEEJ

Burns only has himself to blame in losing. He let the judges give it to Burns. He knew he was in enemy territory and yet he didn’t fight like he was. There where to many times he just sat in front on Burns not doing anything. He should of been hitting his arms and elbows to tired him out. Yet he just stood there looking.

Posted September 8, 2013 10:40 am

As with the neigbouring article, as Scots we’re a fair and resilient people who understand when something unjust has taken place and will seek to rectify or at least make sure this doesn’t happen again anytime soon. Ricky Burns has been an unlikely world champ but he has the defences and credentials now to justify that status. It now appears that he’s only a fight at world level away from losing his belt. He was losing the last one and everyone knows he lost last night. That said, for a lad from the lofty heights of Coatbridge to become a WBO belt holder is a massive achievement. Broner et al. is a step too far for Ricky Burns but he should be very proud of what he’s achieved while maintaining a dignified, humble, and respectful persona throughout. Ten rounds with a busted jaw is no mean feat either so the man has a heart. But Beltran was the winner and I hope they get the rematch on, in Scotland, and he’ll make a few quid, and if it plays out like last night, take the belt back to Mexico.

I’m Scottish and a fan of Ricky Burns but the fact is he doesn’t deserve to be champion this morning. He didn’t fight well and was dominated for most of the fight by Beltran, whom I feel sorry for.

Burns has had two poor performances on the bounce and the indications are that his days as champion are numbered. I hope I’m wrong but something has to change.

People on here are making out that his last fight was a similair affair. Lets not for get that Burns was getting outboxed in that fight but it was his heart and desire that saw him through that one. The chap thought he could get ricky out of there and exhausted himself in the process. That was a clear win for Burns. Sadly it appears that Burns should of lost this. Where does he go from here?

Posted September 8, 2013 5:43 am

buttermancan

I’m british and love ricky burns as i’m half scottish. I was at a party and it was on the tv in the background. Have to admit i only saw the first 6 rounds. I had beltran up 4-2.
Lets be honest though……. Britain isn’t that bad a place at all for travelling fighters. It is nothing like Germany .
Heard Ricky had his jaw dislocated in the 2nd round. Unfortunately it looks as though Ricky is there for the taking. Shame cos after the way he dealt with Katsidis I thought we had a new star on our hands

Posted September 8, 2013 5:37 am

Broken jaw was why he was clinching that makes no sense if he was that good he wouldn’t get hit and get a broken jaw it’s like saying we only lost the football match because we conceded a penalty, don’t concede one then! That’s 2 in a row he’s been very lucky with he is a fraud if I were him I’d put my belt in the post to Beltran he doesn’t deserve it

What if Burns had a hurt jaw, that has nothing to do with the decision, you don`t give points for that, THIS WAS ROBBERY, THE WORST KIND, THE REF SHOULD HAVE TAKEN AT LEAST 2 POINTS FROM BURNS FOR CONSTANTLY HEAD-LOCKING BELTRAN AND TRYING TO DRAG HIM ACROSS THE RING. I suspect that Puerto Rican was paid to give up against Burns, he beat the crap out of burns for 7 rounds, and then gave up. but any way if he had continued to do so for 12rounds Burns would still have got the nod in britain. THIS WAS SICKENING and iam not even a fan of Mexican fighters. To me Ricky Burns is just a good Area fighter nothing more.

BS decisions are rich people taking from the fans, nothing more. This is the same in germany, UK and american. To be fair to Burns I can remember watching him against Johansen, and the sky team were talking about that fight being his last chance saloon to make his mark. When he lost that fight against a poor level domestic fighter at that stage I bnever thought I’d see much of him again, let alone thought I;d be sitting here years on talking about him as a two weight champion. Beltran definately exposed his weaknesses again tonight but I bet on that night after loosing to Johansen he would have snapped your hand off if you had offered him the path thta pay ahead of him.

Because I watch lots of fights year round and America is by far the worst. That’s why. I see foreigners getting robbed over and bad decisions there on an almost weekly basis. And how many times do we here of American fighters getting popped for steroids and PEDs? Now compare to Germany where one OSDT type testing is mandatory for all fighters on the cards of their biggest promoter over there.

I’m not stating that the fight was fixed PRIOR to the actual fight. I’m saying that the judges who gave it a draw and a win to Burns clearly fell into that stupid trap of siding with the crowd whenever Burns “landed” a punch.

Burns had the tools to beat him but fought the wrong fight. Watt was banging on about Burns holding on the inside but that was the right tactics by Burns. Burns was getting hammered on the inside, he needed to hold and get the fighter split and put back at range where he was the strongest. However Burns should have threw a quick one two and been on his toes and out of the way. Instead he threw a one two and stayed in too long and got hammered with a hard left hook.
