Public Enemy.., One thing about last night’s card… Two American fighters beat 2 popular foreign fighters in an American ring.
The shouts for the foreign boxers were deafening. Americans wanted Americans flattened — this doesn’t happen in Argentina or Mexico.
Garcia should get some credit out of this.. He was a bigger underdog against Matthysse than Canelo was against Floyd.Posted September 15, 2013 5:08 pm

My prediction was bang on! Danny couldnt be KO’d and won on points keeping the fight mid-range, told ya’s.Posted September 15, 2013 7:41 am
The fight went 12 with neither fighter ever hurt real bad… I didn’t expect a KO and it didn’t happen… A stoppage threatened because of the swelling to Matthysse’s eye… But even with that eye he managed to not get badly hurt.. Neither could get the other going…
Peterson is a brawler and was the perfect opponent for Matthysse to hammer straight into the canvas … Garcia is a counterpuncher and has the worst style for Matthysse… I said these things before the fight of course.Posted September 15, 2013 4:31 am

I know what you mean with Lucas lunging a little with the right hand Herron, though to an extent I think it sometimes looks worse than it is because he has people backing up so much. The second half of the first round vs Peterson he was lunging for instance, but Peterson was in reverse gear and no danger of the counter.
If Danny keeps his head and is backing up that is certainly a potential opening for his left hook.
I wouldn`t be surprised to see Matthyse lay Danny out with a left hook though, he can be a little wild with it, but I like his greater variety of punches in close, and the way he will look to punctuate an exchange with it.
I`m going for a win in round 4 for Matthyse – Danny have a nice start, looking nice and compact, then getting confident, entering an exchange and finding out it is if not man against boy, then MAN against man.Posted September 14, 2013 8:49 pm

this is the fight of the night garcia is a great counter puncher and im guessing he will win by Ko no less. this fight reminds me a lot of the clevely vs kolakev fight, young champion with a mouthy dad as a trainer vs a huge puncher but garcia has been there before and i dont think he will freezePosted September 14, 2013 8:10 pm

He has a bad habit of lunging in from long range with the right hand to the body and head.Posted September 14, 2013 7:25 pm
Herron.., “Matthysse’s tendency to lunge in from long range with the right hand to the body and head.”
I don’t see that either. Matthysse throws hard. He wants to score the KO. He has good range. He doesn’t leave himself open by lunging from way outside with his right. He’s trying to throw the punch you don’t expect be doesn’t throw “stupid stuff.”Posted September 14, 2013 7:17 pm

“FA did you hear Danny say it was because of lots of people around the scales were making them move a bit” – KO yeah that was a LOL excuse. These calibrated scales go down to 1/10th of a lb. To claim it was off by 1/2 lb because people were yelling somehow changed its calibration is absurd. Surprised there was no controversy about this, especially considering the emphasis put on the weigh-in.Posted September 14, 2013 6:51 pm
“Do you think Danny’s father will complain like Virgil Hunter did after Mike Dallas got smashed?” – Joseph, no. Dallas’ camp got NSAC to test the Amino 4500 and there was nothing wrong with it. You can only pull that routine once.Posted September 14, 2013 6:49 pm

TARK: “This is a competitive matchup with about a 60% chance to go 12. I make Matthysse a 2-1 favorite based on his present indomitable mindset to let nothing stop him. A lot of this game is mental, simply willing yourself to the top of the mountain.”
I don’t think this fight has a 10% chance of going the distance because of both fighters’ willingness to exchange.
I think Matthysse is better than a 2 to 1 favorite because of Garcia’s deficiencies on the inside like I pointed out in the article.
Garcia’s best chance to win is to take advantage of Matthysse’s tendency to lunge in from long range with the right hand to the body and head. If he does that in the outset of this contest, Garcia could stop this bout early.
But, in my mind, that’s the only chance he has of winning this fight. Once Lucas closes the distance on Garcia, it’s all over.
Lucas is a much better technical fighter than most realize.Posted September 14, 2013 4:52 pm
Canelo gonna taking a boxing lesson and lose convincingly. He stands no chance. Mayweather might even stop him either on cuts (probably) or TKO. But no way will Canelo win, not a chance. Mayweather is far too good for him. This is easy to call.
Mayweather wins.Posted September 14, 2013 4:49 pm
Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)
Prediction: This will be the BEST fight of the night and Matthysse will win via stoppage.
Garcia has too much confidence in his own power and at some point will make the mistake of exchanging hooks with Lucas. That’s when LM will catch him with one or two sledgehammers and lower the BOOM. Real talk.Posted September 14, 2013 4:48 pm
matthysse has determined that the only way to win in the U S A is to KO his opponents and that is exactly what i expect him to do to garcia !Posted September 14, 2013 4:42 pm
Another well informed and knowledgeable piece, Joseph. Keep up the good work and more people will return to Eastside and get involved in the the boxing banter instead of being turned away by the inane yapping some indulge in. I myself am picking a Matthysse victory later on in the fight, maybe round 8 or 9, but Garcia is a tough guy.Posted September 14, 2013 4:39 pm

maybe I should have made that statement a little clearer…when I stated speed and fluidity, I was referring to Lucas’ footwork…not explosiveness on the inside.Posted September 14, 2013 4:32 pm
Matthysse KO inside 4 rounds in a very exciting short fight.
Mayweather on points in a very boring fight.Posted September 14, 2013 4:31 pm
Herron.., Your analysis of a MD victory for Floyd was a stronger forecast than this one…
For one thing, you say, “Lucas only has decent to good footwork and hand speed, but has the ability to throw short, compact and accurate punches to offset his lack of speed and fluidity.”
Matthysse has exceptional speed and fluidity. His destruction of Ajose, and quick disposals of Dallas and Peterson, demonstrate he sets and throws with exceptional speed and power.
He’s gotten even quicker. Garcia is also very fast and powerful, but neither boxer has a finished jab that is a weapon. They use it as a range finder for their power shots rather than to soften their opponents like Floyd, Ward, Golovkin, Kovalev, Wladimir etc. Judah and Alexander limited their abilities to throw the jab. If you have a great jab, no southpaw takes it away. A jab would make the difference in this fight if either boxer had one.
This is a competitive matchup with about a 60% chance to go 12. I make Matthysse a 2-1 favorite based on his present indomitable mindset to let nothing stop him. A lot of this game is mental, simply willing yourself to the top of the mountain.Posted September 14, 2013 4:26 pm
Another great piece Joe – Us real fans have not let this match go anywhere near under the radar and understand that it alone could easily tow it’s own great undercard fights on any given Saturday night. Both fighters deserve careful study. In fact, that’s what I’ve been doing for the past three nights. Danny has an admirable boxing IQ but his loss of focus during the last 9 minutes of fighting Zab leads me to believe Matthysse will win. Something more than meets the eye happened during that fight that changed Danny and I’m convinced he has been damaged to the point that winning tonight is not possible. But as the wise farmer always says, “We shall see”.Posted September 14, 2013 4:25 pm
