Groves and Booth have split. Booth is imo the best trainer in the UK. I believe Nathan Cleverly may be seeking a new trainer……

Booth would certianly polish up Clev’s talent and remarkably enhance his ring IQ and game plan strategy and awareness

I would like to see Groves vs Degale 2, I think Groves would do a real beat down on him now, Degale hasn’t been improving much.

FA it is so my man, the boxer vs the brawler, but don’t forget that Froch can box too, in fact I think his boxing skills is on a par with Groves but wither he uses it is a different story, I think Groves will be too mobile that Carl will HAVE to bum rush him into a scrap. how do you think it plays out?

“FA I agree he does mix it with fighters he can mix it with, but he’s be a fool to mix it with Froch,I foresee him doing what he did to Degale, in and out.” – KO that’s exactly how I see him fighting Froch. Groves-DeGale was entertaining even though he boxed, since he did crack him with some good shots when the time was right. Nice stylistic match up here.

Groves is a very clever fighter and it will be interesting to see what gameplan he brings,we know what the Cobra will bring, smash.

Froch has put him on canvas in sparring with head guard and big gloves, that to me doesn’t bode well for George, that’s what leads me to think he wont mix it with The Cobra.

I don’t see Groves as a pot shot artist. He moves well but also mixes it up nearly every round. He just doesn’t stand in the pocket the whole time. Froch showed in the Ward bout he can be outboxed so this is a closer fight than many people think.

BF set to strip Calzaghe’s belt

Calzaghe ripped the IBF belt from Jeff Lacy in March
Wales’ super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe is expected to be relieved of his IBF title. Calzaghe, who also holds the WBO belt, has been told to agree to fight the IBF’s number one contender Robert Stieglitz by December.

That seems unlikely to fit into the long-reigning champion’s plans.

“It would bother me to lose the title, but business is business and I want the biggest fights and the most money,” Calzaghe told BBC Sport Wales.

“[US TV network] HBO want me to fight an American next, and if a bout with [German-based Russian] Stieglitz doesn’t add up we’ll have to knock it on the head.

“I’m going to speak to [promoter] Frank Warren next week and I hope to find out who I’ll be facing then.”

IBF set to strip Calzaghe’s belt

Stieglitz, 25, has an unbeaten record of 29-0 (19 KOs), but there are no major names on his record and he is unattractive to the American television companies.

But Calzaghe is more likely to meet Rhode Islander Peter Manfredo Jr – most famous as the runner-up in US TV series “The Contender” – in the UK in March.

Manfredo is well known to the US television audience
“I wasn’t impressed with him in “The Contender” but he’s improved since and his last two fights have been great wins over Scott Pemberton and Joe Spina,” said Calzaghe.

“That would be a tough, exciting fight, and he’s a big name in the US.

“He would offer me a fantastic platform to showcase my skill across the Atlantic where I’m looking for a big-money fight against Bernard Hopkins or Jermain Taylor in June or July.”

Calzaghe, who is adamant he faces a legitimate challenger in a fight which is more about the champion’s chance to shine in front of a large US TV audience and so set up a bigger fight later this year. With US TV network HBO screening the fight live, Calzaghe is anxious to please after his last outing when he admits he under-performed.

Victory could see Calzaghe making his 21st WBO title defence in the USA, possibly against former world middleweight champion Jermain Taylor.
“We’ve been in discussions with Taylor and that’s a fight we would like, but first he has to come through this one,” said Warren.

Gonzo the Dragonborn

Froch didn’t become a world champion until a month after Calzagfhe had retired. Up until that point the best opponent he’d ever beaten was a completely shot Robin Reid. To be fair to him he did struggle like crazy against Brian Magee and Charles Adamu though. He’d beaten no one and more importantly he was a complete nobody in the US. The big American TV networks were instrumental in picking Calzaghe’s opponents at that stage of his career. They’d give him a list of three and he’d have to fight one of them. Calzaghe had already beaten the best of Britain in Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, all of whom were held in much higher regard than Froch was at the time, much higher. He would’ve barely gotten any more praise for beating Froch over in the US than he did for beating David Starie, who was actually very talented and held a victory over Clinton Woods. Calzaghe was chasing fights against the likes of Jermain Taylor and fighting the big dogs like lKessler and Hopkins when Froch was trying to piggyback of his name. The only time a Froch fight was really viable was when Calzaghe fought Manfredo but as I said HBO were picking his opponents and trying to set up big money super fights against Taylor and Hopkins then. That’s why he had to relinquish the IBF belt he’d won against Lacy. HBO wanted him to fight an American, and Manfredo was far better known over in the US than the vast majority of world champions are given the immense popularity of the Contender series.

HEY KOrnerman

GOOD TO SEE YOU STILL POSTING…. The one chance GROVES has is for BOOTH to pull something from up his sleeve during the fight if things are getting heated…. I too seriously DOUBT that these two have split…. The bond between HAYE, BOOTH and GROVES is too strong and yes, you’re correct, they are known for setting traps and mind games to throw their opponents off guard.

This is a very good matchup….. Whoever wins should go after STIEGLITZ, who I believe will defeat ABRAHAM in a rematch and try to add the WBO belt.

Last man standing can then go for SOG, ANDRE WARD…..

Froch has fought and beaten most of the world’s top SMW’s and now Groves has a high ranking and is being given his chance. Why not? However, I see a painfull night for Groves! He’s a game kid and will bring his best but his recent opponents and results have flattered to deceive. Froch has fought at levels Groves has only dreamed of and has won all but twice. Froch will figure Groves out after a few rounds then walk him down and punish him. All this talk now by Froch is a mental game to start creating an edge against Groves who has neither the experience in or out of the ring to cope with Froch. Froch by mid to late round KO!!!

Turb0-H@mster

I RESPECT YOUR VIEWPOINTS and YOUR MANY POSTS, but the simple facts are CARL COBRA FROCH was the number 1 contender when he called out JOE CALZAGHE and had every right to do this.

JOE had called out all the big names years before he had earned his own position to fight for the vacant title back in 1997.

SIMPLE FACTS are boxing unfortunately is a business and like JOE was back in the mid 90′s Froch was not a big enough name for the RISK/REWARD scenario to work for CAlzaghe.

Same goes for the likes of GGG, KOVALEV, etc and is why FLOYD wanted MATTHYSSE and GARCIA on his PPV to build them up in front of 2M plus PPVs….

Boxing sadly is more of a business these days, than a sport.

Hope this clears things up?

Posted September 17, 2013 5:14 pm

OH, DEAR….. ST GROVES’ CHANCES of winning just dropped by 25% if this is true. BOOTH is a master tactician and is a calming influence and focusing figure between rounds.

GROVES has a natural inclination to fight and can only spring an upset by mixing good boxing with the occasional hard exchange.

FROCH will read this and sleep even easier!!

In Froch’s defense, he’s not the same ilk as Kessler content to win a belt & make meaningless defenses against B-level opposition until public demand for a better opponent forces his hand. That said, Ward like Froch flew 3,000 miles from his hometown for the Super Six finale, albeit granted he was still in his own country. Perhaps they should’ve had that fight in Montreal so neither guy’s fans could piss & moan about home cooking, but either way doesn’t matter much where those two fight. At 168, Froch and the rest of them are fighting for second place.

@TARK, this isn`t an “easy” milking defence, it is a mandatory for the IBF title, and an intriguing domestic clash.

I`ve seen you say in the past that Calzaghe ducked Froch and that there was a great appetite from the british public for that – when let me tell you, no there was not. Frochs calling out of Calzaghe was seen as premature and slightly disrespectful

There IS an appetite for this – as shown by the fact it sold out in 11 mins and will be a PPV.

I agree Froch is lining Ward up to be his last fight, but the words Froch and Milking don`t ever belong in the same sentence.

Posted September 17, 2013 10:57 pm

TARK

In Mexico they watched the Mayweather-Canelo fight for free… In America we should get the Froch-Groves fight for free — not that it would draw a massive viewership but I’d like to watch it on EPIX or whatever like we get the Klitschko fights.

Froch is fighting Groves because he doesn’t want another go with Ward just yet… He wants to milk his present “world title” with easy defenses.

Let’s get this straight. I’m a fan of George Groves, but take it from me, I think he’s been mis-managed on this occasion. As WBC #1 contender @ 168Lb matchroom should have pushed for the Sakio Bika contest thus gaining him a 50% purse split against Froch in a unification fight. However the Hearns seem to(like every other promoter)only have there own interest at heart. Unfortunatlly the deals been struck now & St George seems to have the rough end of the stick. I wish him well!!

Posted September 17, 2013 5:00 pm

Pat Mustard

Groves is a mere inconvenience for Froch, Froch has had this fight imposed on him and he’s not happy, Groves will get swatted like a little fly. Froch should look to get unification bouts against Bika and Stieglitz, Ward can wait until Froch’s final fight.

Anyway, COBRA will please all the fans who like boxers to GO TO WAR.

ST GROVES also likes to go to war and a sme point we will see something of the Froch-Kessler slugfest…… I like both guys, but I have always rated FROCH very highly. Both me have good amateur pedigrees, great trainers and a great warrior spirit.

This bout will be won by who can keep their cool under pressure. Groves impressed vs Road Warrior with piston-like punches and Froch looked dynamite vs BUTE and KESSLER in he rematch as well as vs KING ARTHUR.

I think FROCH by Split Decision over 12 rounds!!!

Die Siener

It won’t be a walk in the park for Froch who seems to have become very big headed. If Groves can stick to the plan Booth puts together he has a good chance. Dirrel beat Froch everywhere, but on the score cards. Taylor gave Froch a boxing lesson for 11 rounds and 2 minutes. And Ward dominated. Movement is the key and as Taylor proved you need to fight the full 12 rnds. Would be great to see bug head brought down to earth by a domestic rival.

Posted September 17, 2013 3:40 pm

WHAT!?!

Groves has looked OK due to his competition being of the lowest quality. He will not stand up to the experience and strength of Froch. Froch dominates and ruins Groves.

I like both fighters but it’s Froch for me. A lot of credit to Groves for stepping up.

I can envisage Groves winning the earliers rounds by attacking in short bursts in out and circling Froch. But Froch and Mccracken will be fully expecting this as Groves and Booth will be wise to avoid a brawl like the plague. It will only be a matter of time Froch connects or seriously roughs Groves up. Ultimately it will come down to how elusive Groves is. Very good domestic fight. Best of luck to both.

Froch will win by KO, Groves has a weak chin. Froch will close him down fast and batter Groves. Just like he did to Bute. Fast foot work and pure aggression will finish Groves off. If Groves keeps his distance and boxes he can win, but Froch will be on him right from the first bell. If that happens the KO will come very quick.
