I liked Oscar and he was tough and fought some good fighters in there prime. BUT, he never fought the best fighter there was in the division of Junior Welterweight and that was KT. Oscar wouldn’t of handled the constant pressure of KT and would have been eventually beat. Even Oscar called him an animal in the ring. Would have loved to see that fight happen though. Oscar was the original Cherry picker. He fought Tito Trinidads left overs. after Tito destroyed them like Fernando Lardass and Mayorga. and he only fought Hopkins after Tito fought him and he demanded a Catch weight unlike Tito who did not demand a catch weight.Posted September 23, 2013 8:25 am
people forget that at that Time Oscar Top Rank and Tito Trinidad King Promotions were both Champions and unbeaten.. it was the fight of that ERA.. it was the fight to finally prove who was Mas Macho.. Oscar had been avoiding Trinidad for years but Tito agreed to less Money to make the fight.. Only one fighter came to fight.. Then Tito Told Delafishnets we can have a rematch tomorrow just reverse the names on the Contract but Oscar never agreed.Posted September 23, 2013 7:47 am
Oscar ran for the hills for all 12 rounds never once backed up, hurt or engaged Tito Trinidad. As the Boooing Pro Oscar crowd said afterwards, they were embarrased by Oscars Running and the 3 Pro Oscar Judges said the same. Only one fighter came to fight, one came to Survive and you do not win Rounds vs Champion by running and surviving. Oscar got spoiled being given rounds for merely looking Pretty..Posted September 23, 2013 7:44 am

“IMO, neither Floyd or DLH deserved the “W” in their bout, which would’ve been the fair and honest way of putting that “rivalry” to bed.”
Same here, te tumbo. I’ve watched that fight a number of times. Frankly, neither on of them deserved a “W” for their stinky performances.Posted September 22, 2013 6:29 pm
“How about fighting a washed up Yory Boy instead of fighting for the Unified World Super Welterweight Championship with Winky Wright???” TARK, Winky was next door to washed-up after being Demolished by Vasquez, defeated by Harry Simon, and outboxed by a green, 17-fight Fernando Vargas. Winky was also a lifelong 154lbr who was notorious for avoiding American competition by targeting euro-bums and failing to redeem a single one of his losses and how many f’n times did we have to see him face Bronco McKart and win EVERY SINGLE TIME?!? you can continue describing and defending what you imagine but i’ll stick to what actually happened.Posted September 22, 2013 5:41 pm
IMO, neither Floyd or DLH deserved the “W” in their bout, which would’ve been the fair and honest way of putting that “rivalry” to bed. i also thought that DLH was fighting B-Hops even with the tide shifting in Bernard’s favor and culminating with the decisive bodyshot. nonetheless and once again, DLH was competing and engaging. he caught a bad-jacket due to Clancy’s and Alarcon’s instructions, which were correct if unappealing. they justifiably but incorrectly concluded that DLH had already sewn-up at least 7 rounds and the last couple shouldn’t have been critical, which they weren’t. Trinidud looked like a rank amateur out there. Seth Mitchell has better boxing skills than Trinidud ever did.Posted September 22, 2013 5:35 pm

Oscar crooked as a 3 dollar bill Sturm beat Oscar from pillar to post up into the beer garden back down to the ticket stand and across the street. Only judges score that fight for Oscar is shady business behind the scenes. Same as shadey business with the one score against PBF in theCanelo fight. Oscar is pissed PBF is the PPV king, PBF kicked his ass in there fight Oscar always assumed making smaller opponent come up in weight would slow them down and Oscar being 20 pounds heavier on fight night would give him the advantage he totally left out skill which is why kept getting his butt kicked by smaller fighters.Posted September 22, 2013 4:39 pm
Sturm was jabbing his way to a win that he should have gotten.Posted September 22, 2013 4:20 pm
hey, im a de la hoya fan and i agree 100% that he lost the sturm fight. no doubt about itPosted September 22, 2013 4:12 pm
Meant to say, “Not only did Oscar get STRANGE votes from 2 judges versus Sturm.Posted September 22, 2013 4:12 pm
Not only did Floyd get STRANGE votes from 2 judges versus Sturm.
Those SAME 2 JUDGES showed up to judge Hopkins–De La Hoya.
Bernard.., “Yeah, it’s kind of funny they’re the judges.. But it doesn’t matter.. I’m going to knock Oscar out stone cold.. If the fight goes 9 I’m going for the kill like a maniac for the next 9 minutes.. If he makes it he’ll be beaten half to death … I can’t afford to let him live.”Posted September 22, 2013 4:10 pm

TARK – weren’t we talking about De La Hoya…HA!Posted September 22, 2013 3:59 pm
hecubus01…, DLH didn’t duck anyone you can think of???
How about fighting a washed up Yory Boy instead of fighting for the Unified World Super Welterweight Championship with Winky Wright???
Winky is one of the many fighters Oscar flat you ducked for years — something you can’t say about Floyd.
Floyd negotiated in good faith with Pacquiao—and that fight will definitely be made if Pac beats Rios and Floyd beats Danny Garcia … It has a 80% chance of getting done by next September. It’s just possible if could be done in May if they want to shaft Danny.Posted September 22, 2013 3:54 pm
te tumbo – i agree Sturm didn’t really light it up, but my impressions of that fight were that I was surprised that De la Hoya got the “win”. I mean not really surprised ( because that hopkins fight was on the line), but as the fight progressed it was one Sturm round after another. De La Hoya wasn’t doing anything to him. Sturm definitely was in command of almost all of that fight. It didnt help that De la Hoya looked flabby and didnt train hard. A motivated and in shape de la hoya schools someone like sturm 10 out of 10 timesPosted September 22, 2013 3:43 pm
Strum dominated Oscar from like the 3 round on. Something like that. He most definitely got the W, earned the W or whatever you want to say.Posted September 22, 2013 3:34 pm
DE LA HOYA A COMPLETE PHONEY.Posted September 22, 2013 2:55 pm
HECUBUS, my primary gripe with the Sturm fight is that Sturm failed to close the show v. a vulnerable De La Chubby. Sturm’s fear of being caught by a desperately-slinging DLH was evident and the lasting impression i have of that matchup. i consider it a “Draw”. i was underwhelmed by DLH’s and Sturm’s performances in that bout. neither earned an emphatic “W”, but at least DLH was trying to engage while Sturm was primarily trying to avoid losing.Posted September 22, 2013 2:52 pm
te tumbo – ive always been a big fan of de la hoya and i agree with you that he got robbed blind in the trinidad fight and also the second mosely fight…..but in all fairness, i think he also lost the sturm fight pretty clearly. Some people may not like De la Hoya, but its hard for me to see how people dont respect him as a fighter…..the guys resume is one of the best all-time. He fought all of the very best fighters of his era and ducked no one that i can think of.
mayweather (should’ve been twice)
that phony persona was on display once again during the Mayweather v. Canelo pre-fight series. in one instance during the promotional hubbub DLH asks Mayweather to take a picture with him because “they don’t have one of us together”. Floyd responds with some sarcastic but not particularly offensive remark and we catch a glimpse of anger and disdain cross DLH’s face after which Mayweather complies and in a literal flash DLH is all sunshine and roses with a toothy smile once again (lol).Posted September 22, 2013 2:02 pm
Oscar De LaHoya was great for boxing, post-Tyson. I didn’t like the fact that he DID in fact put on a (phony?) good guy image a little too strong for me. He was always smiling for the cameras, even in defeat. (Really? You’re happy you lost, Oscar?) After the second bout with Moseley, he was pissed off and was caught on camera walking back into the dressing room area saying something like, “.. How did they give him the decision and I landed a hundred fkn more punches! …” Once he noticed he was on camera he flashed his smile and blocked the camera lens with his hand.
Anyone remember that time he took off his underwear to make weight at a weigh-in? Some people were holding a towel up for blockage and the towel ‘accidentally’ dropped on one side. No one bothered to hold it back up. Women in attendance were screaming with glee. How much does underwear weigh? C’mon. Did he really have to strip?
To me it did seem like he had a fake persona he emitted to the fans. I didn’t like it. I think Floyd has a fake bad guy image he’s working us with but I don’t mind it. Oscar’s cheesing for the camera and high-pitched voice were annoying. I can see why Mexican fans didn’t like him because of this and the fact that he beat their hero, Chavez. I remember my Mexican classmate telling me this back in high school.
I thought he was given gifts against Pernell Whitaker, Ike Quartey and Felix Sturm.Posted September 22, 2013 1:20 pm
no less a boxing authority than Gil Clancy was in DLH’s corner for the Trinidud bout and he was the one demanding that DLH “box” against Trinidud during those last four rounds. at no point does Clancy express dissatisfaction with DLH’s performance. if anything, those last four rounds were Part II of exposing Trinidud’s utter lack of boxing ability. he couldn’t catch DLH going standing still or going forward. he was flailing and bewildered mess during those last four rounds, which only compounded DLH’s utter domination of Trinidud in that bout. in fact, NObody was more shocked at the “official” outcome than Trinidud’s delirious fans. IMO, DLH’s first bout v. Shane (who was possibly “enhanced”) and B-Hops are the only two legitimate losses on DLH’s record. he was Robbed in the bout v. Trinidud and the rematch v. a doped-up Mosley. he actually out jabbed closed the show like a true champion going for the KO v. Quartey. the dehydrated shell that was pummelled (but not KO’d or dropped) v. Pacquiao* is official but that’s not the DLH being focused upon in this article. although, it may be the arrogant and over-confident DLH that so many resent in the first place.Posted September 22, 2013 12:29 pm
Peej your correct Oscar won 3 rounds out of 12 against Quarty. Oscar ran for 7 rounds against Trindad. Over hyped one armed fighter feared on the old and smaller fighters sad thing the smaller fighters kicked his ass.Posted September 22, 2013 12:21 pm
“He’s a pretty boy . . .” is the answer along with the spoiled and pampered connotations that go with it. otherwise, I could give a s**t what “Mexican” fight-fans have to say about DLH. IMO, they’re not the most informed of boxing fans and they’re also not American. DLH is, which invariably taints their objectivity when evaluating American fighters of the same ethnicity like DLH, but the “pretty boy” image also taints the objectivity of non-Mexican fight-fans who resent DLH with a unique brand of petty envy. including that DLH is or isn’t totally “American”. which nation’s fight history was DLH contributing too anyway? meanwhile, DLH the “dog” is who i can recall women complaining about at fight-parties. DLH was busy in and out of the ring during his prime and I can recall plenty of women demanding and rejoicing at his “defeats”. when you break down the anti-DLH demographic, it’s perhaps the strongest endorsement of DLH as a HOF fighter among true fight-fans. he fought them ALL, in their Primes, and on the Biggest stages. he united and ultimately polarized fight-fans with his unprecedented success, which is still the case today. for whatever reason, too many of DLH’s detractors believe that nobody deserves to be that successful and especially “Oscar”.Posted September 22, 2013 12:16 pm
Oscar clearly beat Tito, but in his next fight against Quartey I felt they did a make up call and gave him that fight because I thought Quartey won that one. But Oscar clearly boxed Tito for 8 rounds and should of been up 8 rounds to zip. He ran the last 4 so he lost those rounds. But that just goes to show you have to fight for 12 rounds or else the judges will screw you over. Heck they may screw you over anyways.Posted September 22, 2013 12:06 pm

Doggie – stop the day dreaming.. DLH did not beat Trinidad.. Both were Champions and both had to TAKE it from the other.. you couldn’t give Oscar Rounds for merely surviving.. Even the Heavily Pro DLH Crowd Mostly Mexicans were booing him for not engaging and fighting Tito Trinidad.. all he did was back Peddle for the first 6 rounds then he flat out RAN!!! even Fernando VArgas said at the figh when asked about Oscard performance “He’s not a true Mexican, Mexicans do not RUN” and that was from a fellow Mexican at the fight… Oscar go too used to being gifted rounds vs opponents just for surviving.. Only one fighter came to fight in that fight and it wasn’t DLH.. all Three Pro DLH vegas Judges gave it to Trinidad based on effective aggression.. DLH never once hurt or backed up Trinidad…Posted September 22, 2013 8:38 am

He’s company is gonna take boxing to another level & i hope to see the roster of fighters expand across the pond as well…Posted September 22, 2013 2:30 am
Oscar gave both Mayweather & Pacman their first of many to follow ppv fights… He’s legit. That was the first & last ppv Mayweather accepted at a 70/30 split not in his favor. He knew that was only the beginning of financially prosperous career & has paid back in kind by only using Oscar’s GBP. As far as “Mexican” which is too broad of a definition even for boxing, he’s an East LA Mex-American. cali-republic born & raised. no shame in that. Hard to hate a guy that never had an excuse not to make a fight happen unlike two others of this past generation.
Add to his starting a Great Promotional Company, and making fights fans want, just more accolades to Oscar for what he has done in the boxing World.
But he is not a “Real Mexican”: NO, he is American. Gold Medalist, World Champion many times over, and beat the crap out of the “Real Mexican” J.C.C.
Hope he gets his life together. Everyone has issues. Nobody is perfect.Posted September 21, 2013 3:51 pm
Most comments here are moronic. Sure DLH got robbed a few times, but he got more than a few gifts. Sure he was not born in Mexico, but Mex fans support other Mex-Amer fighters like someone else mentioned. And for the retard who mentioned that the reason is because all Mexican men are macho and anti-drugs….LOLOLOLOL!!!! For idiots who mention Americans claiming their heritage – I have seen plenty British fighters claiming their Pakistani, Jamaican….all sorts of backgrounds. Bottomline is Mainland Mexicans don’t consider US based Mexicans true Mexicans.. when ever a Mainland Mexican fights a US based Mexican, Mexico roots for their Mainland fighter.. When Oscar fought Chavez Sr. Mexico was all against Delahoya.. but being the sore losers that they have proven to be when Oscar clearly beat Chavez Sr. they never got over it.. Oscar knew this and is the reason he eventuallly told all of them to go to hell..Posted September 21, 2013 11:52 am
Give the man a break!!!!! Oscar fought his tail off every single time he entered the ring. He dodged no one, and he should not be blamed for beating up Mexican Legend Julio Cesar Chavez. Oscar was a Gold Medalist, lost his mother and achieved greatness in so many areas of life. Lots of people hated him because of his looks and the females were after him like a rock star. He was always very confident and respectful, but haters didn’t like him for any reason. As far as the Mexican vs Mexican American issue goes, Mexican Americans fighters and Mexican American people in general never seem to be looked at as equals because they’re not 100% Mexican. It’s a culture pride thing IMO. The biggest targets are athletes, but specifically fighters. Oscar style of boxing was that of a boxer/puncher. He had speed, but Mexican fans wanted him to stay there and fight toe to toe like the Mexican warriors of the past. Moving is looked at as being afraid. Oscar also spoke both languages well, and he looked the part of a movie star with everyone wanting a piece of him. Everywhere he fought, fans came to see him. Oscar is now a promoter, puts himself out there, and every time he makes a mistake, the media jumps all over him. They almost want to see him fail. Floyd Mayweather is out right jealous of Oscar as are other fighters. Some have even taken shots at his recent rehab situation. Oscar has admitted to his short falling, and people should leave the man alone. He was an exciting fighter that gave it 100% all the time. IMO, he would have beaten Mayweather in his prime. He almost beat him as an old man. Oscar De La Hoya is a human being as we all are. He’s made some mistakes, but being born a Mexican American should not make him any less of a person. Oscar should be judges on his boxing accomplishments, skills, and efforts he gave when he was in the ring. In my book, he’s truly one of the best fighters ever.Posted September 21, 2013 11:48 am

Dude needs to focus on sobriety he has plenty of cash and a great business to enjoy..Posted September 21, 2013 8:50 am

Oscar is Americans right? When will these yanks ever accepted thier americain? Instead they have to work it out in % for example some yanks will say thier like 23% Irish 4% Scottish 9% German etc no wonder the world thinks they are idiotsPosted September 21, 2013 8:05 am
I can tell you one fighter that Oscar, Mosley, Mayweather Jnr all ducked. They all skipped through Jnr Welterweight afraid of Kostya Tzsyu. It took an enormous amount of money, age, ridiculous timeslot and home town refereeing for Hatton to even beat him.Posted September 21, 2013 7:56 am
So do any of you wonder why Oscar turned his back on these Mexicans who never really embraced him and went Rican? Marrying a beautiful Puerto Rican Singer and making Puerto Rico his home? In Puerto Rico he has always been treated as one of their own without ever being asked to not be a proud Mexican. Even Tito Trinidad calls Oscar one of his Best friends and has been their to support Oscar and his family through Oscars bad times… Oscar has always known he was never accepted by his own People.. There are alot of Mexicans that have come to accept him once he became really big as a Promoter but he knows they’re all full of sht..Posted September 21, 2013 7:55 am

By the time Holmes fought Ali, Ali was so far gone he should not have been licensed to fight anybody let alone Larry Holmes. Try again, please.Posted September 21, 2013 7:36 am
I always loved rooting for Oscar to lose, but he almost always won. The one time I rooted for him was versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. He clearly lost that fight. The scorecards that gave him a SD loss were and still are laughable. All that aside, he had a great career. Oscar and Richard Schaeffer have also built Golden Boy Promotions into one of (if not THE) best promotional outfits in the world. Now if he’d only stop using cocaine and wearing fishnet stockings lol.Posted September 21, 2013 7:08 am
THIS IS A FAR BETTER PIECE OF JOURNALISM than we have seen in recent months on ESB….Considered, balanced, passing a viewpoint, but NOT RAMMING it down our throats!Posted September 21, 2013 7:03 am
I dont think the Mexican community really embraced him because he was Mexican/American. Having said that I was wearing a De La Hoya/Mosley T Shirt in Mexico City in 2006 and quite a few people out there were looking at it shaking their firsts and smiling. Oscar had a great career and was fun to watch.Posted September 21, 2013 6:29 am
