toosalty — In the stand-up sport of boxing, taking a man off his feet is only surmounted by him being unable to get back up inside the count of 10. Some fans feel a 10-8 round can be easily overcome on a scorecard by simply winning the round but for the knockdown; most judges do not. It is a BIG DEAL to take a man off his feet in a stand up sport — a VERY BIG DEAL!Posted October 1, 2013 11:28 am
toosalty — With all due respect, you are wrong; Trout did NOT land more punches in the majority of rounds. Alvarez landed more punches in 6 rounds and Trout landed more punches in 6 rounds. If a bout were scored based on cumulative “flow”, then it is true that Trout threw more and landed more over the course of the bout. But a bout is NOT scored on cumulative flow, it is scored one round at a time. At times the flow of a bout gives a different impression then what is happening on a round by round basis. Each round in the 10-point must system is scored as if it is the ONLY round in the bout. In the Alvarez/Trout bout two reasonably sound judges were perfectly capable of seeing the same close round as even, for Trout or for Alvarez — it was a close bout. One of the major flaws in the 10-point must system is the absence of scoring for momentum from round to round and flow over the course of a bout.
I’ve proposed in the past adding one more 10 point must score — an “over-all score”. The way it would work is simple: After scoring the final round, a judge adds one more 10-p;oint must score to the card — who did the judge see winning the fight over-all? This “13th Round” would allow for mitigating the flaws in the 10-point must system.Posted October 1, 2013 10:37 am
I feel like Vera won this fight too, but the point that im trying to make is everyone complaining about effective punching, Chavez being out boxed/outworked etc. Where were all of YOU with the Robbery against Canelo/Trout. No body cared, Old Yank you said yourself that you gave the fight to Canelo by 1 rd how, when in most of the rds Trout threw more and landed more even bring the rd where he was knocked down to a 10/9 rd.Posted October 1, 2013 10:11 am
CJ Ross has company. If public outcry made her hide, why isn’t the same happening against the judges of this fight? I find it difficult to believe there’s no discrimination against male judges. While her card was wrong, at least it didnt’ affect the decision. Right now, CJ Ross is a saint in comparison. I’d take the lesser of the two evils.Posted October 1, 2013 10:06 am
Yes, this was a robbery …it was criminal. Similar to the robbery inflicted on Pac vs- Bradley. Bradley can claim he saw the fight many times and thinks he won but he will never say he lost. He just wont. If Bradley knew just the basics of psych, he would know that the more you think something is real, the more you will also believe it to be true, the way he does now. So, naturally he’s going to be in denial. There’s too much at stake for him to say otherwise. A person of good character he is not. For being a chump, Floyd should never grant a fake champion the opportunity to share the same ring as him.Posted October 1, 2013 9:59 am
Chavez barely won the fight. He looked awful.Posted October 1, 2013 1:45 am
The fight was closer than judges had it no doubt but Chavez Jr landed ALL the HUGE shots in the fight.Posted September 30, 2013 9:53 pm
toosalty — I am old school. I place significant emphasis on clean, effective punching and defense, ring generalship and effective aggression all take a big back seat. However, I judge a bout one round at a time. Once the scores are in the boxes the round is forgotten. I do not think about how hard a fighter was rocked in the prior round — the prior round is done; it has NO BEARING on my score for the next round. Yes, harder shots should impress a judge more than softer shots. But no face can end up looking like Chavez’s face looked and conclude that he was not eating hard shots. We do not have a punch-o-meter giving us readings as we watch the bout. Eventually if a fighter taking hard shots seems undeterred by the shots and at the same time is seriously out-working and out-landing his opponent, credit must accrue to the more active and scoring fighter. C’mon bro, Vera out-landed Chavez in 8 of the 10 rounds and sent Chavez to the locker room looking for a jumbo pair of sunglasses to hide the evidence. You asked for the Fisher Price version, I gave it to you. Alvarez and Trout each had 6 rounds where they out-landed their opponent. Vera and Chavez were not even close — Vera out-landing in 8 of 10 rounds. There is no comparison between the two bouts.Posted September 30, 2013 8:58 pm
Even in the rds where he was not rocked, Chavez still landed the more meaningful punches Harder shots. See boxing is funny like that how do we know if the punches where harder right, its however we feel or who is the fighter we like best or the more popular fighter at the time. I cant say Vera won and Trout lost, if you guys dont wanna give other fighters the same benefit of the doubt. If you love the sport and not the fighter, country, race and call the fights fair and square. We cant do that because of Money,Country, hate, and plain ignorance about what the sweet science really is. Not meaning you Old Yank just us as fans watching.Posted September 30, 2013 5:29 pm
Punkass Chavez Jr. is nothing like his dad.Posted September 30, 2013 5:21 pm
toosalty — Fair enough question.
I had Trout losing by one point — the knockdown being the difference. In Alvarez/Trout, Trout landed 26 more punches than Alvarez, however, on a round by round basis, each landed more punches than their opponent in an even split of 6 rounds a piece (a fight is judges one round at a time). Indeed, the punches of Alvarez had more zip on them but Trout landed more over the entire bout. But boxing is a collection of 3 minute bouts that are over after 3 minutes and you must go on to the next 3 minute bout – judge one round at a time. In Vera/Chavez, Vera not only landed 51 more punched than Chavez but he out-landed Chavez in 8 of the 10 rounds. I gave Chavez all three rounds where he MOMENTARILY shook Vera. But I gave Vera all the rounds where he was not rocked and where he clearly out-worked and clearly out-landed Chavez. In one bout the fighters split landing the most punches on a round-by-round basis while in the other it was 8 of 10 rounds favoring Vera. I hope that’s Fisher Price enough.Posted September 30, 2013 4:16 pm
My point is how can you see Vera winning and see Trout loosing, i dont understand. what do you judge in a fight, and when do you judge what you are judging IM JUST SAYING HELP ME UNDERSTAND FISHER PRICE IT FOR MEPosted September 30, 2013 4:03 pm

Chavez Jr does NOT sell tickets — or at least not any more. The “house” was more than HALF EMPTY last Saturday night (it holds 8,000). Arum claims that 5,000 seats were filled. The photos of the venue when the main event came off tell a very different picture. It looked to me like fewer than 4,000 were in attendance.Posted September 30, 2013 3:37 pm

Chavez Jr, sell tickets so he’s being extended ALOT of courtesy which is naturally unfair… His day of reckoning is fast approaching as he will be forced to face bigger and bigger boxers… Its just a matter of time before someone really lays it on him… There was a period where I respected his improvements, but his regression cannot be ignored he lacks the tempermant and discipline to be a serious top boxer but his name is gonna bring him a few more million…Posted September 30, 2013 12:30 pm
This was a bad decision, but I think we all knew that anything remotely close would go to Chavez. That being said, this was a dismal showing by Chavez. He was slow, easy to hit and gassed after a couple of rounds. He needs a real trainer, and he needs to actually train. His father was a fine fighter, but has he ever trained anyone? The big time is no place for novices. Even preliminary boys make weight. Any of the top men at 168 would have stopped Chavez at present form.Posted September 30, 2013 10:50 am

Boxing pro-fighting is DEAD now we have the Boxing reality TV era (24/7 and All access)
How the heck did he get 8 rounds on a scorecard? Vera served up nothing but over hand right opportunities early & looked like he was 20 lbs lighter. Chavez had every advantage and it was clear that he lost. Any fighter worth their salt with 40+ fights and that many advantages would have beat Vera. The fact is that Vera gave up every contractual advantage, still went in there, poured his heart into it & won. It’s clear that Chavez has not progressed from what he was at less than 20 fights. He’s definitely not champ material.Posted September 29, 2013 4:34 pm

Its this kinda of crap that makes me stop watching boxing. Chavez was a crybaby in this fight and completely out of shape. He does not have the drive his father had, but instead riding on the name. Pot smoking, not making weight, throwing tandrums in the ring…….he is not respectful of the sport or does not take it seriously. If not for his natural power he would be just a pedestarian fighter. They robbed Vera because they don’t want this match to effect any superfights down the road to preserve the Chavez commodity. Vera was not to suoppse to win. But if Chavez keeps showing up at fights like this, its a matter of time before he is beaten.Posted September 29, 2013 3:26 pm

I don’t see how the one ref had it 98-92, but I can see anything from 97-93 Chavez to 94-96 Vera. The better punches were landed by Chavez, But Vera was much busier. The problem was Vera was missing a lot, as shown by Compubox, and He would let Chavez even and over take rounds by taking too many good shots. Hey but I don’t expect to change anyone’s mind here. After watching the fight twice, I had it 96-94 and 96-95 Chavez, and could have easily scored a couple of the wounds for Vera instead of Chavez…Posted September 29, 2013 12:32 pm
I guess we can safely say that HBO does not = an HONEST BOB OPERATION—HBO has just as much power in boxing as ARUM the WBC – WBA -IBF and yet they still let this crap happen, with the track record of Chavez not giving drug test results after fights, not making weight and shorting the length of the fight and yet HBO let it go on,they should have told Arum and Chavez to hit the road, If they did that then ARUM would have no wear to show his fixed fights, HBO use to be great for boxing but them days are over, you can bet they lost alot of fans last nite, like or hate Larry merchant at least he would have been yelling and bringing notice to the crap Arum shoved down our throats last nite,–PEACEPosted September 29, 2013 12:21 pm

Vera is a hard-luck guy. I think early on Chavez was serious about his career. He has or had (a huge fan-base). However, after last night’s performance I think that will change. It was Vera who put in a noble and earnest effort (as he always does) and the crowd responded to him. Vera has been down this road before and he’ll just dust himself off, get right back up and look for his next opportunity.Posted September 29, 2013 11:42 am

Just re-watched this fight. Yes, this was indeed a robbery. I scored it 97-93 Vera. Vera out landed Chavez in 8 of 10 rounds. It’s a fkn shame that this great sport is so often ruined by pre-determined outcomes. Boxing judges clearly get bribed and/or are incompetant. And there’s no punishment for it. To the contrary, these judges will continue to be assigned to high profile, world championship fights. At some point Chavez is going to have to fight a serious 168/175 pounder and he’s going to get hurt. A guy like Froch will absolutely damage this kid. Vera was robbed, but he still came out roses: He made good money, came out with a clean bill of health, and looked pretty good in what was universally considered a size mismatch. Bottom line, Vera is game but limited, this fight gives him another interesting fight in the future. Good for him.Posted September 29, 2013 10:06 am
I think Chavez Jr. has been very disrespectful to boxing and he is limiting his career and limiting his money potential and not living up to his overall potential as a fighter and an attraction.
Junior has the chance to be a great fighter — but he does not seem to care.
Having said that, this was a close fight.
For those of you who thought Vera won in a blowout, then you are happy that the judges gave Bradley the win over Pacquiao — because it was exactly the same thing.
I would have to go back and look at the fight again and really count the significant blows by Vera — but my guess is if you really count the significant blows by Vera and the significant blows by Chavez, then this fight was probably a draw and at best a split decision win by Vera or Chavez. Very close.
I don’t think either fighter should have won by big scores.
So, the judges look like idiots not because they gave Chavez the win — but because they gave Chavez the win big. And it really was a close fight.Posted September 29, 2013 9:56 am
When a man gets to be 80 years old one would hope that a semblance of virtue could be seen in his principles. When the PED issue came up regarding Mayweather/Pacquiao Bob Arum was handed a golden opportunity to take a principled stand against doping in boxing. He did not.
When Antonio Margarito was found loading his gloves, Arum was handed a golden opportunity to take a principled stand against glove loading. He did not.
When Chavez, jr. in his serial offenses of weight issues was in need of moving weight from 162 to 168 and then to 173, Arum was handed a golden opportunity to take a principled stand against fighter sloth and silver spoon privileges. He did not.
It is abundantly clear that Arum is not driven by any virtuous principles; he’s driven by greed and greed alone. His greed has damaged the sport that has fed him all these years.
So in keeping with how this sport functions, I nominate Bob Arum for the HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD in boxing.Posted September 29, 2013 9:43 am

Chavez lost. He got a gift decision because 1.)if he lost it would ruined some bigger events for boxing in the future 2.)His last name 3.) His promoter. Reminds me of when Oscar should have lost to Felix Sterum, but was given the decision because it would have ruined that fight being set up between Oscar and B-Hop. Chavez Jr. is an undisciplined fighter with a poor work ethic. He should be fighting at light heavy but he knows he has no advantages there. Cant use the steroids any more to cut weight so what is he going to do.Posted September 29, 2013 9:30 am
Vera very clearly won this fight. He was the busier puncher and he was landing power punches. Did they look as hard as Chavezs 1 punch pot shots, no they didn’t but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t landing power punches. This is a shame and I believe it has everything to do with Arum. What is funny is that since this is Arums little cash fighter he has not said a single word about the scoring like he did in the Pac vs Bradley fight or any other fight that Arum thought the scoring was a travesty.Posted September 29, 2013 9:22 am

Vera is a Champion, period. He handled himself in the post fight interview with alot more self control than I would have given. This will make Chavez an even more unlinked fighter. Can’t wait to see Chavez get his ass kicked vs. Ward or GGG. He’s a bum, point blank. If you’re a fan of his, you’re just a Mexican holding on to the glory days of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. I have never seen such a stupid, circus atmosphere where they determined the weight of the fight was determined 2 days before the weigh-in. Two days! And I thought I has seen it all in this too often frustrating, pro-wrestling type sport. As far as last night’s fight, Vera land 50 more punches (in a 10 round fight), but Chavez was more accurate. Chavez probably earned some extra points for rocking Vera a few times, but that’ll happen when you allow a fight weight of 173 lbs. the week of the fight when the challenger is a 160 lb’er who was supposed to be fighting at 168 lbs.Posted September 29, 2013 7:53 am

Check out the judge that the WBA assigned to Klitschko-Povetkin!!!
Ted Gimza, from the U.S.A, in Illinois, is a well known convicted felon. He was just convicted of Class 2 Felony Weapons charges, in IL, on July 29, 2013. He is currently on FELONY PROBATION!! His case number, in Lake County, IL, is 12CF382. He also has a previous robbery conviction, is a multiple DUI offender, and was once charged with MURDER!!Posted September 29, 2013 6:17 am
Does anyone at all actually screen these judges, in any way, before they receive these assignments?Posted September 29, 2013 6:09 am
Chavez Jr won the fight whilst Vera won the Boxing match. Chavez landed the hardest punch whilst Vera landed more punches though less damaging or was it Chavez Jr chin that gave me this impression. Anyway, I score the fight for Vera.Posted September 29, 2013 5:59 am
I sall the fight I don’t think the decision was bad, Brian Verra is a lousy fighter slow, cant punch, sucksPosted September 29, 2013 5:42 am
I dont know what all the fuss is about, we all know boxing is bent and this wont be the last time it happens, but we will all still carry on watching it, so whats the point in moaning.Posted September 29, 2013 4:38 am
Wow. Thats why a lot of people can’t watch or respect our sport. It’s very inconsistant in what matters, the sane rules don’t apply to all the fighters. Shame shame.Posted September 29, 2013 4:14 am
I had it a draw being pro Vera on close rounds. The judges scores were definitely out of line with reality the fight reminded me of Canelo vs Trout. I cant say that it was a robbery though Vera had virtually no defense and let his block get knocked off with big vicious haymakers the whole fight.Posted September 29, 2013 4:13 am

Mick the Marmalizer
As with the recent travasty in Scotland where Ricky Burns got the nod(wrongly) this brings a strong case for the return of 15 round championship contests. The extra 3 rounds could prove vital.
Once again real boxing fans must ask ourselves why we bother watching? So many times the clear cut winner is robbed of his hard work due to corrupt judges. I won’t say “corrupt or incompetent” judges because it gives them too much credit. One day boxing will be investigated and criminal charges will be filed against various judges and state officials. Meantime all we and the beat reporters do is complain about judges. What else is there to do? Throw a grenade at the ring.Posted September 29, 2013 2:31 am

Chavez clearly lost the fight. Vera was robbed. This is one reason I am not watching boxing as much as I used to. 98 – 2 ?! Boxing is destroy itself. I think the fans should declare Vera the winner and not recognize the decision of the criminal judges. They appeared to have their cards already filled out before the fight!Posted September 29, 2013 2:23 am

Chavez Jr. was a much better fighter under Freddie Roach, look at the new Chavez, trying to be a slick defensive mover but still got tattooed repeatedly the entire fight, ever punch he threw was a home run haymaker and slow as hell.
Vera on the other hand has a great fighting style, he is like a pocket sized Jack Dempsey without the power, if only he had a little more punching power but hey, when you are a small middleweight fighting against a cruiserweight its hard to hurt them.
Vera won easily but Chavez Jr. has the name the money and the political backing.
Could you imagine that Chavez Jr. from tonight in against Andre Ward or B Hop at 175, he wouldn’t land a single blow.Posted September 29, 2013 2:12 am
Did anybody see that mans face, he looked like the loser. Jim lampley should have asked chavez jr. if he wanted to press charges, he beat up. When chavez wakes up in the morning and sees his face will he be able to say well the other guy looks worse?Posted September 29, 2013 2:10 am

Chavez Jr cannot do condition management.
I loved it when the ref told chavez jr to stop whining. Vera should haves said I won and I’m moving on. I wouldn’t beg for a rematch against a hype job fighter like chavez jr. First it said I’m posting to slow and then to quickly, only on this website whats up with that anyway.Posted September 29, 2013 1:53 am

Anonymous You’re right – Chavez Jr vs Adonis would be a disaster – Jr. would still come in overweight, get stunned a dozen times by crunching right and left hooks, make a smelly poo in his pants, kick the poo at Michael Buffer, body slam the referee out of frustration and still get 8 of the 12 rounds on phony scorecards. Seriously though, I’ve never disliked Chavez Jr. …. Got no problem with Mary Jane, I like to eat a lot too and I know that Martinez would have never made it through a 13th round so it’s the things that include but are not limited to the three judge thing, one referee that never seems to be the right age, height or proper IQ, the number of people who can stop a match and the wacky match-ups (#25 fighting #243?) that are televised and the fact these fighters have no kind of union irritates me too. Some of us don’t like organized football with it’s 12 actual minutes of action and 2 hours of BS, we don’t watch basketball with it’s wacky players moving from team to team every season or baseball sack scratchers – We just want boxing to be pure and something we can spectate with our wives, nephews, friends, whoever. But who wants to have to talk someone into watching a bout when the last bout they watched they immediately proclaimed “This is fixed and it’s rubbish!”. Anyone could see Vera trained his arse off for this fight and for his reward he was left to calmly plead for a Chavez rematch. How is this explainable?Posted September 29, 2013 1:35 am
Those judges were bought.. This was one of the most disgusting decisions in a long time. Boxing is a crooked business, and there’s no cooperation real effort to straightening it out.Posted September 29, 2013 1:32 am

The judges should have submitted their cards before the fight and taken free seats with the Chavez family. That would have been just as wicked yet more transparent. How is it after all these years and technological advances Boxing is not even experimenting with and incorporating internet voting? Qualify and select 33 international individuals, have them score these events that are televised and then let us the fans score how well those 33 judges performed the task. We will eventually only allow the very best to judge matches – trust us, we will sift out the trash quickly….. Time to get with the digital program. TO Brian Vera- You did a fantastic job and hope you can land the winner of GGG vs. Stevens. You deserve it. TO Chavez Jr: Eat some more and challenge Adonis – We will definitely tune in to see how you cry though that fight!Posted September 29, 2013 12:43 am
Boxing is so sadly corrupted. Brian vera deserved the win without QUESTION. Chavez is nothing more than a spoiled, pot head drunk that continues to get gift decisions. That one judge that had Chavez winning 8 rounds to 2 should be locked up in some ware house and slapped for days. Boxing will continue to lose credibility with these kinds of decisions.Posted September 29, 2013 12:42 am

After today it’s clear that Chavez Jr can now win every single belt in boxing. Vlad and Vitali K stand no chance at Heavyweight. The Strawweight champion stands no chance either. Chavez Jr is the king of boxing. He is untouchable. Chavez Jr wins every single time. That’s the rules. That Bob Arum made up.Posted September 29, 2013 12:35 am
JoeKid, it is not fair to the guy like vera who works his arse off to fight and the scores were prewritten the night before. It is not an exhibiton for Vera. It was his career. I even wanted Chavez Jr to KO Vera before the fight started so we could have a Martinez-Chavez II but after watching Chavez move slow as molasses throwing one and two punches I was rooting for Vera. It is a freaking travesty. If I didn’t like boxing so much I get out of dodge now.Posted September 29, 2013 12:32 am
