tark, spot on as usual. same thing happened here. late money coming in on pov. big chance for foul play here, just like in the brewster fight.

Gamblers knew about it… If you listen to the telecast of the fight on youtube.com Jim Lampley talks about the unusal betting activity just before the fight… So many bets, and o much money, came in on Brewster very late, that the odds dropped from 11:1 in favor of Wladimir to 4:1 in a matter of minutes.

I like Chagaev too Brother Adrian. He’s a great technician and he has a titanium jaw. Like Povetkin, he was probably better suited to the cruiserweight division than heavy though, well certainly in this era of giant super heavyweights. I think both of them could’ve got down to the division limit of 14st 4lbs and then rehydrated back up 10lbs and come in in good condition at 15st. They were either too lazy or too greedy though, or both.

Logic dictates that Wlad should win this, and win it comfortably. Povetkin does have a good chin but it’s never been tested by a puncher of Wlad’s calibre before. His chin isn’t on Chagaev’s level either so things could get ugly for him pretty quickly if he’s a sitting duck. It’ll probably end up being another mid to late round stoppage for Wlad. It will be very impressive if Wlad gets him out of there early though, and in reverse if Povetkin manages to last the course and give a good account of himself.

Posted October 5, 2013 3:46 am

TARK

KL…, That’s not true.. Wladimir’s legs were gone before he even got hit very hard. Something weakened him very quickly, and he was sick as a dog for many hours. Something besides punches got to him.

Posted October 5, 2013 2:57 am

Adrian

Povetkin is a great boxer with great skills but he is very similar like chagaev who they fought and it was a pretty close fight and chagaev was a great amater too but I think he is going to be in big trouble if he tries to go inside past wlads jab going straight and with head movement because he will get nailed by a big right sooner or later but his best chances are if he goes around klitchkos left side all the time and get inside with combination as soon as klitchko is out of position to throw his right … That’s the only way to get last klitchkos jab but you need to be fast in your feet and have a great agility wich Povetkin gas but will see what he does!

Typical angry klit hater …. Dundy god blessed his soul said before haye vs klitchko haye will kto wlad early because klitchko are really weak then teddy atlas said Austin will ko wlad because before him wlad never faced someone that big with skills…??? Lol just lol….

Posted October 5, 2013 2:29 am

Gonzo the Dragonborn

Remember it’s in Russia so chances are Wlad’s not going to be able to get away with much holding. I think Wlad knows this and he’ll use a lot of movement instead. I suspect that’s why he’s come in light.

Posted October 5, 2013 2:16 am

Gonzo the Dragonborn

I’m actually really looking forward to this one though. I think it has the potential to be pretty exciting for as long as it lasts, but only if Povetkin can get past the jab.

Posted October 5, 2013 2:14 am

Gonzo the Dragonborn

Yourdad.. I wouldn’t read to much into he Huck fight. Povetkin was in terrible shape for that one and he was blowing out of his ass after four rounds. He was on empty after that. Huck is a dirty b@stard too. He was whacking away at the back of Povetkin’s dome with mean intentions all night. If Wlad can land with land his right hand with the regularity Huck did, well I make you right about him stopping him by the midway point.

Posted October 5, 2013 2:12 am

Gonzo the Dragonborn

Brandon.. I agree with that adage. I also agree that Wlad will win, he probably grind him down for a late stoppage. But I still stand by what I said. Povetkin always has been very underrated by many and he’d give anyone problems when he’s on his game.

I’d say Povetkin’s ideal fighting weight would probably be around the 210 lbs mark. But we’re living in the era of giant super heavyweights though and that really works against him.

I’ve seen Povetkin fight giants in the amateurs before though and he handled them well. Wlad’s going to have to be careful of looping hooks coming over the top. Povetkin is a great combination puncher and a good finisher once he’s got his man hurt, so Wlad’s going to have to be wary of that. I don’t think Povetkin has ever fought anyone who hits as hard as Wlad though. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a good chin or not when you’re facing someone who hits like Wlad. Only granite jawed genetic freaks are going to be able to stand up to what he can dish out for 12 rounds if he’s catching then clean with great regularity.

Posted October 5, 2013 2:08 am

Brandon

Gonzo,

He’s a very good fighter. But the old adages really do come into play in this one-a good big man beats a good smaller man…or something like that. Povetkin is a blown-up cruiserweight who is way, way too small to take on a guy who naturally overweighs him by about 40 pounds.

Posted October 5, 2013 1:51 am

yourdad

The Marco Huck fight is the one that makes me think Povetkin has no chance.
Huck has one punch and landed it at will, Klitschko will knock him into next week.

I didn’t say that Wilder has the skill of Wlad. Not even close. All I said is that he’s the only one that really does have a puncher’s chance because the can actually reach Klitchko’s head before being hit with a jab. Reach is 84 inches.

Posted October 4, 2013 9:01 pm

rbasset

I can’t see anybody being a problem for Wlad until Wilder gets few more fights under his belt. He’s got the size, reach, power and accuracy. He’s really the only one with a puncher’s chance. All other heavyweights can’t get past Wlad’s jab.

I would never bet on an underdog who doesn’t have a great chance to win.

Foreman 4:1 underdog to Frazier… Forrest 7:1 underdog to Mosley… Holyfield 18:1 underdog to Tyson… Donaire 3:1 underdog vs Darchinyan… Danny Garcia 3:1 underdog vs Lucas Matthysse… Garcia was even a little touchy. You don’t want to throw money away.

There’s not too many real good underdog bets where the odds are screwy enough… Povetkin over Wladimir is not a good one. You have to be very patient and come with a big fat roll. You get 2 or 3 chances a year tops … It’s much better to bet on favorites because they win.

Povetkin is missing one crucial part and thats speed! To get close to WK with shorter arms doing damage on inside ,with combonations . Corrie sanders (RIP) had a body of a truck driver but was fast and hit hard. And thats the only way i can see Povetkin win with “surprise element” earlry on.

Just slow boxing with the bigger man is made to fail big time

Wlad wins ,but hope for 4-5 exciting rounds

This is a mismatch. Pov may be a good hw and worthy of the shot but he doesn’t go past 7 for nine. A neutral and rational assessment has Klit with all the advantages and unless something is seriously bent then Klitchko wins after Pov has taken some serious leather. Klitcko can sit behind the hammer jab and after 4-5 rounds Pov will be ready to take other shots. Pov has to make this a scrappy, clinging holdfest and he hasn’t the tools to win.

The only upset I smell is if Wlad doesn’t KO Povetkin and the Russian mafia fixes the decision. Or their sniper blasted Wlad before a KO happens. There’s a red flag reported: “WBA-appointed Klitschko-Povetkin judge Ted Gimza pled guilty to a felony weapons charge on July 29.” – WBA is the one governing body that has Povetkin it’s “regular champion.” Why assign a convicted criminal to judge Wlad vs Povetkin?

Brandon — I EXPECT to lose 2 out of every 3 dog bets I make. It only takes one win in three to be well ahead of the game if you are reasonable in picking your dogs. But not all dog bets need to be held.

Let me explain.

There is a reason why Povetkin at 650 became Povetkin at 400 virtually overnight. It took some serious late money on Povetkin to swing things that big.

Dogs are dogs and they lose with stunning regularity. But live dogs can be very interesting.

I think Povetkin is a live dog. I think Klitschko will likely win, but the 650 was irresistible. I am already a winner.

Indeed I was exaggerating on what I could sell my 650 for. But a man would be a fool if he were willing to wager $100 to win $400 and not be willing to give me $150 to win $650. At 400, a $150 wager on Povetkin in “open market” action will only bring you $600 in winnings. So I will happily sell a Povetkin fan an opportunity to win $650 for $150 — saving the fan $50 on what the action is every place else. I only paid $100 for my shot at $650 – I am the OWNER of this action and it is now for sale. I can make $50 for every $100 I wagered and will likely do so tonight (on most of my wager).

I will likely cash in 3/4 of my action before the opening bell — making $50 for each $100 I wagered. The remainder I will keep in the game to see if I get lucky. At that point I will be looking for luck ENTIRELY playing other people’s money.

I never wager money that is not play money.

Well, I agree with Tark that there was something rotten in Denmark so to speak when the Brewster 1 fight went down. Something in the rub down or in the water that sapped Wlad of his energy. Everything in the Klit camp in Russia will be sealed and brought in from Europe for Wlad to eat and drink. They must be extremely careful of contamination of everything they are in contact with. Even the hand wraps & gloves. Everything! I see a mis match to happen and Pov to get blown out.

When Wladimir fought Sanders he couldn’t defend well.. He couldn’t clinch.. Now he can do both well.. His game is 200% better.. Let’s see what Povekin does when he takes a serious head shot. He looked terrible against Huck.

In mid-September, at 650, I put some serious green presidents on Povetkin. Today you will be lucky to get Povetkin at 400. When odds tighten up that big and that fast, it suggests that more than Terrible Tim smell an upset.

Although I expect Klitschko to win, at 650, the dog bet on Povetkin was irresistible!

Hell, I can (and likely will) sell my 650 for 200 TODAY and walk! The owner of my 650 will be in at 450, or 50 ahead of any money he can get anywhere!

This is the way playing out-sized odds early can pay off.

Wladimir had a leaky defense 10 years ago… That’s why he switched trainers in the first place.. Right now his defense is tight..

If he does get tagged like David Haye caught him with a desperation Sunday punch in the 12th round — he can clinch like Floyd Mayweather Jr. In fact Haye was amazed at how skillfully and fast Wladimir threw on the clinch. Haye didn’t have a chance in the world to get at him.

Wladimir’s chin is underrated… Sanders floored him 4 times with heavy blows but he bounced up each time. He was fine shortly afterwards. He was completely exhausted against Purrity because he was sick and underweight. They had to pull him out.

Against Brewster???

Emmanuel Stewart said, “He was poisoned. He was in perfect condition and his strength and balance evaporated in a minute. I’ve never seen a boxer go from winning every round by such a wide margin, and go to just losing all his strength and ability to stand so early in the fight. For the next few hours he was sick as a dog … Before he was even hit hard he could barely stand up.”

I just hope he’s not victimized like this again … in Russia.

Far lesser opponents? Rahman barely beat Sanders. Sanders hurt Rahman, but punched himself out and then Rahman took over. Brewster is a big questionmark, he beat some good guys impressively like Golota, but also lost to some journeyman.

Terrible Tim has a terrible grip on reality. The only valid point he made is that Wlad’s defence is leaky,in terms of how he deals/reacts with getting hit,but many taught him so well,to use his reach/height/distance,that he rarely get’s hit.Povetkin has little to no chance to beat Wlad.I can’t see him getting inside Wlad’s piston like jab often enough to make a difference, and when he does,i’m not convinced he has the power to dent Wlad.Wlad has the rare combination of size, speed and athleticism.Combine that with his experience, uber cautious style and relentless discipline to execute his gameplan, and you realise there’s little chance of anyone upsetting him, certainly not Povetkin. The only heavyweights I could see upsetting Wlad is prime Lennox or prime Holyfield.it’s not worth going back further in time due to the size disparity.Wlad by late stoppage.Unless Pov’s corner drugs Wlad, poisons his prefight stroganoff and ties his laces together….

Have to agree LAG. And for his statement that it was a great victory over the rock! Rahman almost fell down the stairs on the ring walk. He could hardly move in the ring and has been walking on his heels for a few years. Wlad would have handled most of Tims contemporaries, the era of the at HW. Tim waisted a lot of his career through overheating and poor work ethic.

Posted October 4, 2013 1:41 pm

LAJ

Another delusional older boxer. When will they ever get over themselves. Wlad’s defense is excellent. If not how could Haye have even failed to connect with Wlad for several rounds. Haye would have knocked Timmy boy out flat. First Ernie, now this Witherspoon, who was about as good as the present Witherspoon and would have been as relevant in this era. I grew up in the 70 and 80’s, and have long since thrown out the rose colored glasses of nostalgia. Time for these gents to do the same. I actually consider Steward to be a better defensive coach than offensive, look at what he did with both LL and Wlad, no offensive improvement only defensive.

Posted October 4, 2013 1:14 pm

TARK

Witherspoon was the most talented heavyweight I ever saw—and he had one of the best trainers I’ve ever observed. But he couldn’t handle Larry Holmes’ or Pinklon Thomas’s jab. Tim got careless against James Smith and suffered one of his 4 KO losses. If WK gets that careless against Povetkin he will get knocked out—but Wladimir sets a higher professional standard than that.

Terrible Tim was frequently in terrible condition. He suffered puzzling losses to 2nd rate boxers like Evert Martin—one the many stink-outs Tim phoned in. Wladimir has a different attitude and makes the most of his talent.

Tim’s assessments of Emmanuel Steward’s abilities as a defensive coach are valid if you’re talking about the 1960’s through the 80’s. But by the time Steward started training Lewis, he had tons of knowledge about defensive techniques. Manny coached for over 40 years and kept getting better. Wladimir credited Steward for his ability to clinch like a bear trap—and his ability to go many rounds with top heavyweights without taking a hard punch. He learned tons about defense from Steward.

Witherspoon was slick defensively—but the Wladimir of 2013 is much better.

Yes he do have a good chin, and good work rate, and will be throwing combos in bursts which he is good at and then finishing with an overhand right which he is good at. But I think Wlad is too strong and fast and powerful punch for Pov to withstand. Pov will be eating power jabs and not liking it. Wlad by KO. I wonder if Teddy Atlas will be there next to Putins box seats. Interesting venue for the fight in Moscow.

Posted October 4, 2013 11:39 am

Old Yank

Povetkin is NOT a one-handed fighter like Iggy was. Povetkin does not take time off in the middle of rounds — in fact he’s got one of the highest work rates in the heavyweight division right now. Povetkin has a decent chin.

Again, if Povetkin can get inside the jab EARLY, this could be an upset. We will know inside 3 rounds if the smell of an upset is in the air.

If it looks Iggy-like over the first 3 rounds, IT’S OVER! Klitschko wins.

Posted October 4, 2013 11:32 am

Old Yank

If Klitschko sticks to his knitting this will be an Iggy-like bore-fest. If Povetkin can get inside the jab it could become interesting. Klitschko’s last three opponents have been slow, past it or relatively light punchers (Pianeta — slow, no punch; Wach — slow, no punch; and Thompson — past it). His two bouts before that were the past-it, blown up cruiser named Mormeck and the Mouth-That-Roared named Haye.

One could argue that W. Klitschko has not seen a legit heavyweight threat since he KO’ed Samuel Peter in 2010. That’s a lot of time to be away from the legit side of the heavyweight division. But then again, who the hell has looked legit since 2010?

On paper this is an EASY BOUT TO PICK — Klitschko picks up the “W”. HOWEVER, the upset meter is high and the odds make a dog bet irresistible.

WIshfull thinking. Did Povetkin look dominant in his last fights against notable opponents, that being Chagaev and Huck? The answer is no. His other opponents since he got his paper belt were very low level fighters. I don’t think he will be able to make the jump to a top class fighter like Vladimir.

Most heavyweights punch hard. Some harder than others. Stating that Povetkin has a ‘punchers chance’ is not really saying all that much. If a heavyweight fighter allows his opponent to clock him cleanly, it’s lights out baby. This is also why I don’t totally buy into Wladimir having a glass jaw. At least not based on the Brewster and Sanders fights where Wlad’s sloppy defense allowed both to punch him from close range with his jaw jutted out.

This article is awful and plain wrong. On what planet was Stewart not a defence minded trainer?

The style of Wlad says it all and there was a reason why Cotto left Manny, being becuase be could not adapt to his more defense first emphasis.

wladimir doesn’t have to worry about the food and water. he has to worry about the judges and ref being bought off. i thought it was stange that someone paid 23 million for this fight when it was only worth 7 million to a promoter. they try to have a russian company to do the the drug testing. wk was smart not to let that happen. they mess with a winner drug test once and had the fight over turn.

if the corrie sanders that fought klitschko fought povetkin now. he would also knock out povetkin in the second round. then i guess you can say povetkin has a glass jaw.

its easy to read between the lines of witherspoon. He won’t give wlad cred for being a good boxer. Tries to say its his size and training that makes him champ not skills or atletism. wlad is skilled and like emanuel steward said wlad is the hardest one punch fighter he’s trained and the most atletic hw

I’m actually hoping for a Povotkin win here & the start are a new era + unification. If Wlad is defeated I have no doubt that Vitali will seek revenge & we shall have our 1st 100% H/W champion since Lennox Lewis.

Wladimir by TKO or KO in the 6th round. Same display as last fight.

Don’t see any problems for Wlad. It will be just another fight for Klitschko. What is different it’s a big payday.

Agree with most of the stuff tim said except the obvious. Im a klitschko fan but have tonadmitt that wldimir.. has a bit of chin problem, its not glass but he can be hurt a lot easer than most heavys and that creates a possibiliy for pov… credit to klitschko for not having the greatest chin yet still making acomplishing so much proves his incredible talent.

This fight is in Russia, where anything can and does happen. Have you seen the dodgy scorecards in recent bouts?

If ROB Arum was promoting this fight I would definitely think something was fishy in the air.

WLAD should look for the KO….Will be good to analyse the scoring after this fight and look for signs of dodgy doings amongst the officials.

Tomorrow JUDGEWATCH begins!

Run klitschko down, brag about the past and predict a upset. This pos would ge destroyed by wlaimar. I really chuckled at spoons ignorance of wladimars defense and skill.

Povetkin will not get past the jab. It will be like either the sultan vs Wlad fight if Povekin is defensive or the Chargev vs Wlad fight if he comes in aggressive. The most likely type of fighter to beat wlad is a tall athletic skilled heavy with a big punch just like wlad and that is not povetkin.

Alexander Povetkin have a chanse to defeat Wladimir klitschko? Sure he got a lucky punchers chanse like most top contenders have BUT nothing more then that. Povetkin have punchpower and an good chin but overall, Wladimir Klitschko is equal or much better on all other parts (accept the chin). I can’t see Povetkin defeat Klitschko becouse Wladimir is simpley the very best heavyweight in the world and have been the undisputed heavyweight world champion sence 2006 with 13 title defences so far and he is still in his prime days while Povetkin haven’t developed any new skills in recent years. Povetkins’s only chanse to win and defeat Wladimir is by knockout early to middle rounds as after that its Wladimir’s ongoing road to victory. Wladimir is winner by all choises. KO, TKO, UD, MD, SD. Povetkin cannot win on the scorecards against the champ.

I wonder if Povetkin’s a lot fitter than in his fight against Marco Huck. He btter be.
