I’m a Martinez fan but he’s a bit of a grandstander. It’s like when he spoke out on domestic abuse after the Valero incident but what did he do except say Monzon was his boxing idol? He’s kind of a creepy guy.

And this is why the everyday blokes on the street respect guys like Sergio Martinez who take a break from all the politics surrounding high profile sports just to do something decent for a fan, top guy.

U always seem to make my responses for me. It’s like people don’t really even follow he sport closely let alone have ever stepped in a ring themselves. But everyone is an expert….sheesh. #keepitup

Tom,

A man can always tell when someone who has never stepped foot in a ring, let alone fought a contest under the rules.

You talk like a lb, or 2 or 3 or 4 won’t have any effect or affect on a fighters performance and an extra week here or there will turn them into something other than what is possible.

Martinez is exceptional in how, at his age he’s managed to find his optimum peaks at the right time.

Martinez has had the luxury of finding boxing at a very late age in life, hence his longevity in the game at 37, but let’s not forget Martinez is cute and one of the smartest fighters, outside of Mayweather that I have ever seen in this game.

At 37, asking Martinez to lose another “4lbs” and expecting him to perform at peak is nonsense.

Martinez is conservative with his energy, Williams was an accident waiting to happen, Pavlik was a drunk, Macklin and Barker are European level at best as well as Dzinziruk.

How come all of a sudden after going ONE HUNDRED rnds with Cintron (Mosh Pit),Williams Girrafe Chin), Macklin (Domestic British Housewife) Dzinziruk (Was just gonna write WHO), Barker (Sick Note) and the we all know WELL OVERRATED Chavez (Cheech and Chong Slim-Fast) Jnr, have we now decided that Martinez has the skill and power to deal with an ATG and HOF in Floyd Mayweather?

Floyd’s campaigned at 147lbs for years, stepping up twice to challenge the champs and future HOF’s at their weight.

Martinez is a great champ, but if he can make 154lbs with an extra week, then drop to 154lbs and have a fight or two with top 3 opposition and then call Mayweather out loud and clear!

But please stop with this, Martinez just beat Chavez at 160lb and Floyd’s avoiding him insinuation!

Mayweather stepped up to 154lbs, completely out of comfort zone and beat bigger men decisive!

It’s like me saying Martinez is a coward and a fraud ’cause he won’t move to 168 and fight Ward?

4lbs is the difference between taking your family out to Church’s Chicken for a NIGHT or feeding them at home for FIVE!

tom

what are u talking about….the man weight in 159 on the day before his fight with Chavez….if he had one more week that man would’ve drop to 154..the fact he don’t drop to 154 is because no one want to challenge him on that weight…

Posted September 19, 2012 10:53 pm

Peej

Martinez can’t make 154. Yall can wish all you want but he can’t make it. If he could he would have already because there are better paydays at 154 than 160. He has yet to face the elite at 160

Sergio vs. Floyd is a dream match……… And it will stay like that. Floyd doesn’t even want to fight little Pacman , what more facing the bigger Martinez. Just keep dreaming, it doesn’t cost any money.

Clown face

Guys lets not get excited about Floyd vs. Sergio. Floyd don’t have the balls to fight a real fighter, he’ll settle for a already battered Cotto or a used and abused Oscar or a 40 year old Shane. Why didn’t he fight these guys when they were young and unbeaten? It don’t matter only because Sergio will have no problem with Floyd AT ALL. Where do I start? Sergio has a better chin fighting bigger men.Speed is virtually the same, after Sergio makes 154 he is actully faster than Floyd. Power, Sergio all day. Footwork, Sergio again, ring generalship, tie. Competition of late, Sergio. Will and heart to win,Tie.Endurance and stamina, Tie. It would be a beautiful fight with ebbs and flows between the two best fighters on this planet. They are so closely matched on paper that no one would call how it ends, my guess is late round stoppage in favor of the Marvelous one.

Sergio truly is a glorious shooting star across the boxing sky! Thank you Maravilla for giving us the opportunity to witness such a fabulous warrior. When you went down last Sat night, I could see all those years you struggled in the reflection from your eyes. And you got up and fought like a big, big man. Thank you for your tremendous heart!!

This might be kind of a fluff piece but I have no doubt it’s true. Sergio is 100% class. It’s guys like him and Andre Ward that give me hope for the participants of this great sport.

It really does not surprise me because outside of the ring Sergio is a first-class human being and a superb and outstanding role model for boxing.

Damn that is awesome of him to do that!

Martinez Great Job!

Posted September 19, 2012 7:25 pm

Titopa

Ummmm! Martinez made the move to 160 late in 2009, he’s had 7 fights at 160, before then he’d spent 7 years as a Jr. Middle and started his pro career at 147….by NO means is he’s a “natural” Middleweight, he’s actually a Jr. Middle who simply possess the skills to compete against naturally larger men (at 160). Sergio is a solid Jr. Middle and Floyd has fought at 154lbs twice. They CAN be matched, the size difference isn’t all that much.

Posted September 19, 2012 7:23 pm

TheFacts

“Floyd has fought most of his latter career at 147lbs and Martinez at 160lbs.”

Were do you get this bs fake info from? You make it up? Sergio is a natural 154lb light middleweight fighting towering guys like Williams 2x,Pavlic,Macklin,Jr because nobody his size/division will fight him(cotto, canelo, floyd. While floyd picks/dictates his opponents & demands that he can’t even keep himself(breaks his own rules & pays small fine). He bashes pac for fighting catch-weights & does the same thing makes a 37yr old 135lb Marquez inflate 2 divisions(12lb difference) because he’s p4p little risk high reward.Sergio on the other hand is fighting legit guys 15-20lbs bigger than him & dangerous threats.Marquez little risk Big reward,Sergio Huge risk little reward……..You keeping up with me kid or do I need to expose your idols whole resume?

Posted September 19, 2012 7:21 pm

& he does it without bragging or mentioning it,not for the attention like someone we all know who that is.Keep it up Serg great fighter better person.

martinez used to fight at 147 martinez has said he can make 154 to fight floyd but style wise martinez is all wrong for floyd

Posted September 19, 2012 6:51 pm

HHLondon

All this talk about Martinez V Floyd is nonsense unless both could agree to fight at 154lbs.

Floyd has fought most of his latter career at 147lbs and Martinez at 160lbs.

So it would seem a little unfair to expect Mayweather to make the 160lb limit or Martinez to drop to the 154lb weight.

I don’t see why the expectation is always on Mayweather to step to an opponent, when ultimately Mayweather is and has been the #1 for years.

You want to fight the champ, you step up, not the other way round.

Posted September 19, 2012 6:33 pm

there isn

me to!but i hear mayweather fans here arguing “there is no need to fight him”BECAUSE they assume he will beat him so he shouldnt fight like with a lot of other boxer he avoided in the past

Posted September 19, 2012 6:22 pm

eye of the tiger

reno: you should have seen the signs. waking up in late afternoon. prancing around in pink underwear, leaving roach waiting. rather train in his living room probably because he didn’t want to drive to the gym high. doing all these things before his biggest fight against a top pound for pound fighter, he was smoking something alright.

Posted September 19, 2012 6:17 pm

Jetfighter

These are the types of fights PBF needs to take if he wants to be mentioned in the conversation of greatest all time as he has professed himself to be. La Maravilla would prove a stern challenge for Floyd, who is always influenced by risk vs reward considerations

Posted September 19, 2012 6:16 pm

Titopa

Floyd doesn’t like south paws, and they don’t like him…..Sergio would do VERY well, can he win? Yes. Will he? I’d love to find out.

Posted September 19, 2012 5:53 pm

Pans

I think Martinez more than any other fighter would have a good chance at beating Mayweather, he has the style. Think RJJ-Toney, i’m not saying it would be nearly as one-sided as that or that Maravilla would even win, i just think he has the right tools in his locker to give Floyd fits. It’s a shame the fight likely won’t happen.
